New thread for tonight. Will they have to replicate a Tunnock's product? Creme caramel? Can't think what else they might have to do.

I was super impressed with Lizzie and really disappointed that she went. It was so tough to choose because they all did so well.

This might be a bit mean but is every recipe that Crystelle makes, related to her grandparents in some way?

SanFranBear · 10/11/2021 07:49

I thought it was Crystelle's time to leave, to be honest! She had a shocker in the first two rounds and her showstopper was a bit buttercream heavy (although I think Paul said he liked that!)

Chigs totally deserved his Star Baker but I was proper drooling over Jürgens triple chocolate cake (not his floor sausage rolls Envy) - oh my goodness, so so pretty although no-one mentioned how completely wonky it went? It sounded so delicious though..

Sad to see Lizzie go as she was definitely unique.. can't call it next week as patisserie is a real skill and they're all pretty strong now. I think that's possibly another reason Lizzie left - you really do need a light hand for patisserie work and although I adored Lizzies showstopper, I'm not sure it summed up 'finesse' for me.. amazing, vibrant, total one-off but still quite heavy handed (although loved the rice paper bits!)

PrincessScarlett · 10/11/2021 07:57

I've noticed that Crystelle always uses miso in all her bakes.

So glad for Chigs. Very impressive considering her only started baking in lockdown.

Leftbutcameback · 10/11/2021 08:32

Lizzie should be so proud - I don’t think it’s a coincidence that her best bake was one that was so personal to her and reflected her whole self. I spotted the beauty blender too!

knittingaddict · 10/11/2021 09:05

@Choccyp1g

For me, the whole point of sausage rolls is that you make one long one and cut them to size. If you are chopping the pastry into squares, you might as well make pasties.
My husband said this too and he rarely cooks anything.
CoronaPeroni · 10/11/2021 10:48

I'd love to see Lizzie do other TV! She's got a great personality and was never overawed by the 'celebrities'. The others seem to swoon or get silly when they are praised. And Crystelle's legs giving way when she got a handshake the other day was really embarrassing!

Ilovefluffysheep · 10/11/2021 11:30

@longtompot, sorry to go slightly off topic, but just wanted to reply to your post (and couldn't seem to quote it!).

Have you heard of Becky Excell? Amazing GF blogger and author, (she's had 2 cookbooks published this year). Simple GF recipes and bakes that actually work. She also has a website (glutenfreecuppatea). No I'm not her, but her recipes really are brilliant, so I tell anyone that might not of heard of her! It's a shame none of the bakers used any of her recipes.

She also has notes in her recipe books for every recipe on how to adapt it to be dairy free, vegetarian (for some of her savoury recipes) etc.

Sorry to all for going off topic. I just know how difficult it can be to cook/bake GF.

Anyway, back to the topic in hand. I was disappointed that Lizzie went but not surprised. Before the show stopped they were saying it was between Lizzie and Crystelle, and both seemed to do equally well (according to the judges). Therefore I guess they had to look at other things, even though they don't normally, to make a decision, and Crystelle has been more consistent than Lizzie throughout the weeks.

What I really liked is that it was only yesterday we found out about Lizze's SENs - they hadn't talked about it before, or used it in any way to try and elicit sympathy for Lizzie. I actually didn't warm to her at all the first couple of episodes, but she really grew on me after that, and I was sad to see her go.

longtompot · 10/11/2021 11:37

Thank you @Ilovefluffysheep that is very kind of you. I've not heard of her so shall look her up.

(Oh, you can't quote a post that has a quote in it just as an fyi Smile )

Ah, that makes sense then! Didn't realise that.

Definitely have a look. The blog website is great, loads and loads of free recipes. She also has a large FB group (just search her name and you'll find it!). It's a really supportive group, and Becky responds personally to pretty much everything, particularly when offering people help with their bakes when they haven't gone to plan.

We went to The Free From and Allergy Show at Birmingham at the weekend just to see her give a talk, as wanted to support her. She really has revolutionised GF baking for so many people! I think it's probably been a very overwhelming year for her, having 2 books published, but well deserved success and she does so much to promote easy GF recipes.

iklboogiemaninthecloset · 10/11/2021 14:21

Lizzie is so natural & unaffected. WYSIWYG.

JustDanceAddict · 10/11/2021 14:35

Loved Lizzie too - as a PP said, she grew on me!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 10/11/2021 18:12

I love Lizzie - I'll really miss her.

She didn't take any sarky cr*p from Paul or the two idiots and she was always cheerful.

Tulipomania · 10/11/2021 19:20

I thought the vegan sausage rolls was a great idea as Greggs has now given them near iconic status. I would definitely try making those - with bought puff pastry.

I have a coeliac DS so was pleased to see the GF showstopper cakes.

But wish they had told us more about the flours they used. Lizzie used coconut flour (very expensive!), Guiseppe a flourless recipe, and Crystelle bog standard rice flour with Xanthan gum, but I didn't catch what the others used - did anyone else?

I actually think it's quite hard to make a light sponge with GF flour. I usually make fudgey textured cakes with a mix of Doves Farm GF flour & ground almonds.

Sunbird24 · 10/11/2021 23:25

We had a GF birthday cake for my mum recently, made by a bakery that I worked at way back when I was 16! It was so light and fluffy it was amazing - will have to find out what they made it with

Ellmau · 11/11/2021 00:37

thought it was Crystelle's time to leave, to be honest! She had a shocker in the first two rounds and her showstopper was a bit buttercream heavy (although I think Paul said he liked that!)

I thought it looked very pretty though, and although Lizzie's was very vibrant with all the colours, I thought it looked a bit messy.

BonnesVacances · 12/11/2021 19:09

Does anyone know where Crystelle's oven gloves are from? DH has been admiring themHmm so I thought I'd get him them for Christmas. They have fingers like proper gloves.

Choccyp1g · 12/11/2021 20:46

Laughing out loud with Lizzie on Extra Slice.

MaggieFS · 12/11/2021 21:51

Do they still have Tom Allen on Extra Slice? I haven't tried watching it this year; I can't stand him and he's everywhere.

CaptainMyCaptain · 13/11/2021 08:10

Lizzie was unfazed by being on Extra Slice poor George and Rochanda(?) were like rabbits in the headlights and looked very uncomfortable. i don't think she'll get her own show or anything but she could find herself in the jungle or similar, a bit like Scarlett Moffatt.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 13/11/2021 13:51

Gutted about Lizzie.

It should have been Crystelle.

Fed up of all things grandparents and false ‘oh no I’ve made a right pigs ear of that’

Lizzie might have been messy but her tastes have nearly always been praised.

Gutted.

Frezia · 13/11/2021 15:08

Lizzie was lucky not to get eliminated the week before. It was pretty even between her and Crystelle in that particular episode but I think they decided based on which baker had more left to give and IMO it's Crystelle.

AppleKatie · 13/11/2021 17:29

Yes it was a clear cut case of cumulative judging- which is fair enough at this point but I wish they’d be honest about it. Last week Paul was on extra slice insisting ‘it’s all judged on that one week, one bad week can send you home’ which is just clearly not true.

bibliomania · 13/11/2021 19:38

I admire Lizzie for out-surrealling Noel ,"Jaguar wee" will stay with me.

RaisedByPangolins · 13/11/2021 22:19

It was hilarious they were wearing matching clothes one episode Grin

I also think it was a bit unfair to send her home on her best ever bake. Should have kept them all and sent home two next week.

LadyEloise1 · 14/11/2021 09:59

That was some showstopper by Lizzie - 👏🏻
She definitely went out on a high.
