Just finished this series - AMAZING!!
Has anyone else watched it? I'm in awe of how good it was.

OP posts:
holidaynearlyover · 09/10/2021 07:53

I'm 25 minutes in and can't work out whether I'm enjoying it or not 🤷🏼‍♀️

TorySteller · 09/10/2021 15:07

I struggled through the first half of the first episode, but I think it got much better after that.

I spent the first 20 minutes or so thinking “WTF is all the hype about, this is shite”.

They’ve definitely set it up for a second season too which I’m excited about.

Babyroobs · 09/10/2021 16:57

Only watched first episode and I'm hooked.

OrangeBananaFish · 09/10/2021 17:12

I've watched 4 episodes. Its all a bit slow TBH. I'm not that fussed about watching the rest, but DH is quite enjoying so I will probably carry on to see who (if anyone) wins. It was me that persuaded him to watch it as we have seen all the Saw/Hostel type films so thought this would be similar.

Also the main character annoys me, he just needs to grow the fuck up.

Biscoffee · 09/10/2021 19:51

It was on Gogglebox today and i broke out in a nervous sweat it was so scary. I think I might give it a go on Netflix though as it’s very different and it’s good to be out of your comfort zone at times.

specialsauce · 09/10/2021 19:59

I watched it with the dubbing and the dubbed script is atrocious which makes the acting seem equally terrible. I admit I've fast fwd'd through the boring bits to watch all the 'games' just to see what they threw up, some are ok, some boring - thought the 'parts harvesting' back story and the rich SM folk getting off on the 'games' very dull. Wouldnt let a child watch purely because its quite crap, violent and thoroughly depressing premise. Quite pretty colours and design though!

Ricekake · 10/10/2021 14:21

I didn't get into it until episode 3, but found the remainder of the series excellent even though its not my usual type of series. I hope netflix continues to invest in a more diverse range of original series and films following the success of this.

elliejjtiny · 10/10/2021 22:58

I've not seen it but we got a letter from ds primary school headteacher saying some of the children had said they had watched it and that it wasn't suitable for primary school aged children.

OrangeJuiceAndNoodles · 11/10/2021 00:00

The glass Bridge did me in. Waaaay too tense.

I think it's okay, watchable. I'm not quite sure why it's become such a major thing.

MumOfTwoChildren · 11/10/2021 00:52

My favourite Netflix show, already hoping they'll be a second series. We've been watching in Korean with English subtitles as we found the dubbed version terrible and most of the translations are wrong.

TinySongstress · 11/10/2021 05:12

I'm with @OrangeJuiceAndNoodles

It was ok, I watched it all but I'm a bit confused about the hype surrounding it. There's a LOT of back story, I don't know if I'd bother with a second series.

MareofBeasttown · 11/10/2021 07:20

I am on Episode 2 and find the acting v poor and hammy. Overacting in most cases.

alligatorpeardrop · 12/10/2021 09:25

I finished it last night. It HAS a to be viewed in Korean with subtitles though otherwise it comes across odd. I loved it. V arty. Absolutely not suitable for under 15s.

Mymapuddlington · 12/10/2021 09:28

My son is 11 and everyone at school is talking about it. Makes me sad that some parents don’t care what their kids watch and then our kids feel left out.

I’m watching Alice in borderlands, similar sort of feel.

MareofBeasttown · 12/10/2021 09:31

On Episode 3 now and finding the violence quite disturbing. Wouldn't be keen on young DC watching it for sure.

PasstheBucket89 · 12/10/2021 09:42

Yes episode 7 was the hardest to watch!!! too tense and sad but it makes you think how well its made to illicit that kind of rapid emotional response in people,

I watched a reaction video to episode 6 (very emotional) and one of the men is visibly crying, there aren't many western TV shows that create that kind of visceral reaction. Parasite, which also won the Oscars for best film is an incredible film.

but absolutely not for kids.

LOISJ · 12/10/2021 09:51

Absolutely fantastic! Loved it. Deffo not suitable for under 18s…some of it disturbing

I must be one of the only people who has watched it all, enjoyed it but found it far from amazing. I enjoyed the concept, although I was never as invested as I was in the first couple of episodes - setting the scene, the first game and its aftermath - and I really don’t think the characters were well developed at all. Agree that the portrayals of some characters were well behind the times. Not just the women, but also the Pakistani character and the baddies being rich westerners and Chinese.

I’ll give series 2 a go, but do wonder what else they can come up with now we’ve seen how a series of games unfolds.

Also, I wouldn’t compare it to saw or hostel. Contestants in squid game are dispatched pretty quickly. It’s violent, but not torture. Because of the shallow characterisation I didn’t find it got me on a psychological level either. I can’t watch the likes of saw because of the torture factor.

Thought the main character was good looking too - until the last episode!

RedRiverShore · 12/10/2021 10:29

Watched 6 episodes now and it's ok but a bit slow, fell asleep in the marbles episode, it was a bit boring though, hoping for a good ending

drinkingwineoutofamug · 12/10/2021 10:30

Finished watching last night. It's like a bad slipknot video.
Will admit I cried at one point. The marbles game with player 001. He reminded me of my dementia patients.
And hated how Ali was done over.
But yes a good set up for series 2

PasstheBucket89 · 12/10/2021 11:19

Gi-huns red hair at the end made me giggle,

DH said with him ringing up at the end, its like the ultimate Karen, can i speak to the manager moment, Grin can't get that image out my head now.

OrangeJuiceAndNoodles · 12/10/2021 12:13

Thought the main character was good looking too - until the last episode!

Me too. Was developing a miniature crush until that moment Confused I wonder if there's any significance to the hair that we are not picking up on in the west?

Because it just seemed like such an odd decision.

OhWhyNot · 12/10/2021 13:55

I like the guy in the suit at the train station

He is so handsome 🥰

Hopefully he shall be in the second series
