Just finished this series - AMAZING!!
Has anyone else watched it? I'm in awe of how good it was.

I binge watched this yesterday and today. Wow. Just incredible.

cleckheatonwanderer · 05/10/2021 14:17

@SpanishFly yes I'm in the UK, how strange it just played with English voiceovers as the default. We have watched it very recently (binged it over the weekend) so perhaps this is a new thing?

RhubarbCustardy · 06/10/2021 14:01

No way suitable for a 10 year old. It's a 15 rating for a good reason. Even then wondered if it should be an 18 really. Very graphic and disturbing. Sex scenes, shooting, knifing, loads of blood. I found it shocking as an adult buy couldn't stop watching it.

1990s · 06/10/2021 19:38

Watched half an hour and so far the dubbing is ruining it for me.

Is it really that good?

superoz · 06/10/2021 19:48

You can change the settings and watch it in Korean with subtitles.
You lose something with dubbing, the voice acting is usually a poorer version.

1990s · 06/10/2021 19:50

Thanks superoz have done that. Really though is it that good?

AndOtherStories · 06/10/2021 19:52

@GingerPCatt

DS is 10 and said a couple of his friends have watch it. Is it suitable for his age? I'm OK with a bit of bad language and action movie style violence.
20 yo DS1 keeps telling me I won't enjoy it, it's not suitable, far to violent for me apparently Grin
BasiliskStare · 07/10/2021 03:43

I've watched one episode in Korean with subtitles - I think it is good but even though I was pretty free and easy with what DCs could watch - this would not be one I would have let them watched at 10. 1. The violence and 2. the way it seems to be going the plot has stuff in it I would find hard to explain to a young (ish) child.

BasiliskStare · 07/10/2021 03:45

@AndOtherStories Grin - watched first episode with now 20 odd yr old son - He told me when he suspected I would have to put cushion / blanket over eyes

DazzleDrops · 07/10/2021 06:23

I watched the dubbed version - DD20 said it's far better watching the subtitled version. I may watch it again with subtitles - looking forward to the second series.

I always wonder if stuff like this goes on in real life. I remember thinking the same after watching Hostel years ago. Scary!

Spiindoctor · 07/10/2021 06:43

Yes, the subtitled version is better.
I feel its aimed at young. I was a bit hmmmmm when the unlikeable character had a pockmarked face, or were old (shrieky woman), or fat the rest were 'ordinary blokes' and the real baddies were westerners, in particular a sleazy homosexual, hmmmm again. Made me feel it's a bit behind the times as far as political correctness is concerned - don't seem to have that in Korea, or elsewhere, as it's the top rated series.
It was very good though. Had a Clockwork Orange type of feel especially with the classical music.
I think it felt a bit unbelievable to me so the violence wasn't too bad.

SpanishFly · 07/10/2021 08:18

Finished it last night. I can't stop thinking about it all. It was just superb TV.

zukiecat · 07/10/2021 09:13

My adult DD2 watched it, and said she enjoyed it, but it's not for me. She showed me one clip, and that was enough.

I hate needlessly violent things, and reading some of the descriptions on here, this programme would upset me.

I'll stick with my Last Kingdom!

superoz · 07/10/2021 09:18

@1990s

Thanks superoz have done that. Really though is it that good?
It is a good watch, if you can handle the slasher film type levels of gore. It’s a bit like Saw in that way, with the darkness of Black Mirror.

The story arc of the characters are well written. There are plot holes, so by no means perfect but it’s definitely worth watching.

SpanishFly · 07/10/2021 18:28

Agreed - take it for what it is, sit back and enjoy. It's brilliant.

idrinkandiknowthings · 08/10/2021 14:07

Binge watched it over two nights with my daughter and we absolutely loved it. You definitely need to watch it in Korean with the subtitles, dubbing is shite.

Not suitable at all for a 10 year old, far too graphic and gory.

I wouldn't hold your collective breaths for Season 2 though. Director says even thinking about it is extremely tiring.

peachescariad · 08/10/2021 14:15

My DC, 22, 20 & 19 all said they were glad they didn't see if if they were 15...even they said it should be an 18

IDidntFloatUpTheLaganInABubble · 08/10/2021 14:28

Just finished it, watched them all in 25 hours!!

Hope there is a season 2

user6598 · 08/10/2021 17:04

Watched the first episode and found it a bit dull, lots of violence but all a bit over the top, aimed at older teen market, not really suitable for under 14 though

TitsInAbsentia · 08/10/2021 17:08

I'm watching ep 1 but struggling with the odious main character, and frankly I'm not even sure what's going on.

Plus I did a currency exchange - we he getting slapped around on the train platform for £60 or have I got it wrong?!

user6598 · 08/10/2021 17:39

Because the Korean currency is a very low rate, I found all the high numbers a bit unreal which spoiled it a bit, it didn't translate that well for the British market

BasiliskStare · 08/10/2021 17:44

@user6598 Ha ha - I found myself saying to Ds - What is that in real money - by which I mean GB Sterling - I am not good with currency rates or indeed maths Grin

It was written 10 years ago so probably is a bit backwards in some of the views it portrays.

Bloody good programme though.

Agree. Also wonder if they changed the amounts from the original book (ie raised for inflation!).

I did also change from English dub (where do they get these voiceover people?) to Korean with English subs and it definitely sat better without the joke voices.

Also - I loved contestant 001, he made me laugh!

pinacolada5 · 09/10/2021 07:36

I really didn't get the hype about this. I found the main character very irritating and got bored after one episode.
