Just starting this. Judging from the trailers I will be crying and shouting at the telly in frustration before long.

OP posts:
ImTheOnlyUpsyOne · 17/10/2021 22:03

I haven't got far with the series but read the book which i'd say is a lot more realistic and even more depressing. I think Netflix has glammed it up a little bit.

CallMeAChopper · 17/10/2021 22:34

Alex and Mandie were brilliant. Paula just didn’t pass as a real person to me. Just looked like an OTT actor - Jim Carey like …

Brilliant series, frustrating, heart wrenching and exciting all at the same time

fluffythedragonslayer · 17/10/2021 22:35

I am loving and hating this at the same time. It's so awful (what is happening to poor Alex and her beautiful daughter) !! Everyone in it is making me so angry. Very well acted and very moving but harrowing story. I'm 6 episodes in...

50ShadesOfCatholic · 18/10/2021 04:28

@Crinkle77

Oh yeah I can totally see that cycle repeating itself but there was definitely an undercurrent there. I wonder if there will be a 2nd series and they're sowing the seeds of a storyline.
No second series because there's no second book.
ChateauMargaux · 18/10/2021 07:21

I have finished it now so my earlier comments were related to only half way through. It is a refreshing change to have a series that for the most part felt real without being 'poverty porn' or having violent rape scenes which so often feel gratuitous and leave me feeling like the abuse of women is being filmed for entertainment. I find this in books too and I don't like it. Maid on the other hand, didn't stray across this boundary.

Tealandabney · 18/10/2021 09:19

Oh yes chateaux, absolutely, I agree often violence against women is used as entertainment and I didn’t think this did that the same way

Discwriter · 21/10/2021 22:25

I've just finished this and thought it was very good and beautifully made.
The complexity of the relationships over generations and general fallibility were portrayed very well I thought. None of it was black and white.
I would have liked to have known Regina a bit more, they had a lovely but complex (again!) friendship. I'm imaging they're best of friends now. :)

Eaumyword · 21/10/2021 23:10

Sobbing my way through this, interspersed with some lighthearted moments.
I think this is top quality viewing and Margaret Qualley is incredible. Strong, yet fragile and ethereally beautiful.

TrampolineForMrKite · 21/10/2021 23:16

Loved it until about episode 8 when I think it went off the boil. Felt the last episode was pretty dull. Went on slightly too long but loved it until then.

caringcarer · 21/10/2021 23:18

I binged watched all of series 1 in a week. It was so good. My dh hated it and muttered a lot about drivel. I think he did not like steering men portrayed in this ugly way. If you have not watched it, give it a go. Slow first 2-3 episodes.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 22/10/2021 07:01

finished it,
i thought paula was great - and so typical she again stayed with a wrong un.
i was so tense thinking things were going to go wrong, maddie drowning, her mum being dead
but she made it and climbed the M.
i was frustrated that she turned down so many offers of help, from Regina for a start.

Her dad Hank was torn i guess because he was Sean's buddy but he was wrong not to show some kind of loyalty to Alex.
not surprised Nate was upset that she stayed out all night with no contact.
why the clicking of fingers and no clapping? i guess clapping might be aggressive coming in an abusive marriage?

That's concerning about your dh. I'd have zero respect for a man that had that attitude.

I loved it. What unsettled me a bit was that I totally fell for Sean's 'helping' when Paula ended up in hospital. Although deep down I knew the plot had to go this way with her going back to her abuser and nothing would change, I was surprised that I was convinced by his behaviour and thought I'd probably go back too.

The utter dread I felt when he took her car and trapped her there Sad

LondonGrimmer · 22/10/2021 09:37

@sparklfairy me too... Well wasn't 100% sure but was falling for it... and I have a good understanding of domestic abuse (mixture of training and experience). That's why I agree this show did such a good job.

ChateauMargaux · 22/10/2021 09:44

I also thought that the 'nice; Sean was done really well. It was believable. When he was not drinking, he was capable of behaving well, of showing empathy, of supporting Alex and doing what appeared to be the right thing. He was not 'all bad' and therefore it made it more difficult for Alex to feel that it was the right thing to walk away but also more difficult to prove that she was being abused. Situations of domestic violence and especially coercive control are not straightforward.

Sparklfairy · 22/10/2021 17:14

Very true. And at the end when he surrendered the custody battle and they moved away, I couldn't believe I found myself feeling sorry for him when they said goodbye. Not for any reason other than I felt he was remorseful. Did all of this part happen in the memoir, or was the alcoholism fictionalized by Netflix? I wonder if he got sober permanently.

Thefaceofboe · 22/10/2021 17:59

Me too. I actually found myself thinking ‘oh he’s not that bad’... and that’s the problem isn’t it Sad

Crinkle77 · 22/10/2021 18:20

No second series because there's no second book.

That didn't stop The Handmaid's Tale.

Or Orange is the New Black, one memoir, seven seasons...
CayrolBaaaskin · 22/10/2021 18:37

I loved it

DemBonesDemBones · 22/10/2021 19:05

As a former single Mum and former Maid I am loving it! Relating hard. I think both female leads are fantastic, not getting the Andie MacDowell hate!

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 22/10/2021 22:35

Maybe a second series could follow Danielle.
Though I finished this series with the horrible feeling that her story may not have ended so well.

50ShadesOfCatholic · 22/10/2021 23:12

Havent RTT yet.

Binge watched Maid last night. Absolutely brilliant work.

I’m a single mum who escaped DV and became a cleaner so this really resonated with me Grin

Andie macdowell wasn’t great to start but I felt she improved as it went on.

Alex made silly errors of judgement but I think that’s the point of the show- that’s how life works- we all make the wrong choices in big and small ways that lead us to where we are. Not a single one of us is able to say we haven’t. And I certainly don’t want to watch a drama with a perfect protagonist.

Biggest scumbag of all was Nate. The whole way through my head kept saying “he’s too good to be true” but on the face of it he seemed so nice. Always trust my gut! Grin

MrsRobbieHart · 24/10/2021 13:35

Yes Pinkbonbon - good point. The guy came across as a nice guy until he had a drink.

Except he didn’t at all. They very clearly portrayed him as an asshole even when sober. Making digs at Alex about giving Maddy to him when she is crabby, laughing at Alex with his new girlfriend frankie in the bar when he was working, shouting and swearing at her across the park about having to keep his distance. And those were all in public. In private he was worse- all while sober.
