Even though the commentators are still talking about Djokovic as though Medvedev hasn't wonHmm.

How much credit does Daniil deserve? All of it! He bloody won Angry.

I'm a bit cross. Can you tell Grin.

So happy that Medvedev won but I cant believe he apologised to Djokovic or the crowd. they were literally heckling him throughout his last 2 service games.
I normally find Djokovic is gracious to the other player whether he wins or loses (Federer, on the other hand rarely gives credit to anyone who beats him) but the love-in with the crowd was corny AF. (And they seemed to focus on him way longer despite the fact he didnt win!)

I've not watched much of the US open before and I was pretty unimpressed with the crowds today. Very unsporting.

I couldn't believe how disrespectful the crowd were tonight. Never seen anything like it! Well played medvedev. Glad you didn't let them win.

US Open crowd is the worst in tennis, by a very long way.

They are performative, trying any antics to engage with the players and get the cameras on them. That’s when they are not stuffing their faces with a week’s worth of food and drink.

Ridiculously biased, but not consistently so. Booing players who don’t acknowledge them as “the best crowd in the world”. Can a crowd have an ego.. if so, theirs is off the charts.

The Umpires have got weaker and weaker. Just repeating “please” to these morons is not going to cut it.

So glad Daniil shut them up. Novak still managed to make it all about himself... the PP who described him as “needy” got it spot on. As the teenagers would say, he is such a “beg”.

I’m delighted that the calendar record remains with Rod Laver.

Wow, just woken up to see the result, well done Daniil! I didn’t watch any of it as I was absolutely shattered last night, and I didn’t want to watch Djok win again, but kind of wish I had stayed up now!

I was actually wondering what other action was available to the Umpire though? (When it was clear that certain crowd members were taking no notice)

I so wanted Medvedev to win
a) because it's just nice when someone new wins (although I know he has previously got to GS finals)
b) after Djokovic smashed his racquet
c) just to shut the crowd up because they were so disrespectful!

SO happy to wake up to this news.

Sad that tennis is (nearly) over for the year - the year end finals are in Turin this year or is ir Milan??

I watched Djokovic smash his racquet. And even after he had broken it he kept hitting it to the ground. I found it quite scary aggression. First time I had watched US open and was also shocked at the crowd when Medvedev was serving. They were actively trying to put him off his serve. Why do they all support Djokovic so much when so many other crowds (quite rightly if you talk to people who know him) shun him.

Morning Magi (Hope moving plans are going well).
So tired this morning. Been up since 5, and the dog kept me awake for ages after I. tried to to go to sleep. Might sneak back to bed after i've dropped off DD2 Grin.

I'm still very happy about the result, but yes, the NY crowds are definitely the worst out there for the noise and being totally disrespectful to the players.

The sudden turnaround to this 'Djok love-in' is odd anyway- if Federer had been there- and it was obvious during tournaments all last year too- they wouldn't have cared about him either way. They don't really want him breaking Roger's records (and I say this as a Rafa fan)- he's always been the 'GOAT' in the media. I found the fact the crowd seemed so pro Djok very strange too- it reminded me of the first ATP cup, when the crowd there seemed to be made up almost entirely of Serbian fans and suddenly Djok was a hero.

There are a few tournaments still to come - Indian Wells has been re-scheduled for the end of the month, I think, and the Laver Cup is happening (without Roger, Rafa or Djok). Then over to China- but not all are going ahead there. The indoor stuff towards the end of the year.

And yes, the tour finals are in Turin- be interesting to see who makes the cut. Djok, Stef and Daniil have already qualified, but there might be some surprise new names this year.

I keep saying it- but this year has gone way too fast.

Morning everyone! I lost you all last night

Brilliant win for Daniil - can’t believe he had to serve through being heckled - I knew the NY crowd were bad but that was something else. So glad that he managed to hold his nerve

Djok sobbing into his towel at the change of ends was weird and then he made it all about him in the speeches and why did Daniil have to apologise to him for winning? Confused

I’m also pleased that Rod Laver still holds the GS record - Djok must have thought he had it in the bag with no Roger and Rafa

Well I thought this years US Open would be boring with no Roger and Rafa but it’s been quite an interesting one Smile

Whilst I enjoyed the 2 finals and was pleased with the outcome, I'm kind of glad my 11 year old DS didnt see the mens final (He loves tennis and he did stay up for some of the ER match) because of poor and unsporting behaviour from both player (Djokovic smashing his racquet) and the crowd (Booing and heckling). Its pretty depressing behaviour from what should be a really inspirational thing for young tennis players and fans. (Although nowhere near as depressing as the disgusting behaviour at the England - Hungary football match last week. )
I saw Djokovic got a warning for smashing the racquet - I dont know if there are any other consequences? (I cant imagine fining him would make the slightest bit of difference)
But what can be done about the crowds behaviour (I'm sure it wasnt all of them but a fairly large contingent it seemed)

Well done Medvedev. I'm not a massive fan of his but he beat Djok, so I'm happy. Watched from when Medvedev went 5-1 up in the third set and it was virtually guaranteed he would win. The commentary was along the lines of "well, this is a turn up for the books. Who would have believed this?" And I'm thinking, well he is no2 in the world, so maybe not that unexpected Hmm
If the rest of the commentary was like that, I'm glad I only saw the last 10 minutes or so.

Didn't stick around for the presentation either. And the booing, the cheering of Medvedev's missed serves and the crowd just generally trying to disrupt his service games at the end was disgraceful. But that's NY spectators unfortunately.

I didn't see the match - fell asleep at 9pm after pulling an all-nighter on saturday to watch the women's match before starting work at 1am. DH gave me a detailed account this morning. I'm glad I read this thread as, without having seen it with my own eyes, I was wondering if I was reacting far to cynically to what DH was telling me.

DH was saying that despite never having been a Djokovic fan, he really felt for him last night. That is seemed very very human got the crowd onside through his sheer visible passion for the game. He apparently really felt for him when he cried and feels that Medvedev's victory is quite hollow. I said it sounded like Djok acted like a spoiled brat because he was being outplayed and tings were not going as he planned. Apparently though, I needed to see it for myself because it wasn't like that at all. So I asked him how he would feel, and how he thought the crowd would react if it had been a female player acting like this? I reminded him of his anger towards Fernandez on saturday acting "petulantly" when she complained about Radencanu's medical break. About Serena Williams being branded "hysterical" and a "bully" on occasions when she has cried and broken her racket.

He had the good grace to go very quiet and sheepish before saying that this was still "different" from these occasions. For my part though, I'm now even less endeared to Djok than ever before. Not a huge fan of Medvedek either for the reasons quoted upthread but it sounds like there was a disgusting display on non-sportsmanship at play and he really deserves all the credit for winning.

As for the crowd, I think there is an element at play of people believing they had paid good money to watch history being made and would always be able to tell people they were there when Djok broke the record. Medvedek didn't just upset Djok but also the plans of a whole crowd.

@DesignforLife

I think you are right about it upsetting the plans of the crowd. The crowd were relatively quiet while Djok was losing at the beginning. He is one player who seems to need the crowd support to play his most incredible and to allay any frustration. He often drums it up with his hands. He didn't do that this time, he even cried into his towel. Then Medvedev got a championship point and lost it and the crowd 'woke up', it was like they just wanted more tennis instead of a 3 set final. Then the support for Djok ramped up, he started winning a few points and they cheered like crazy and booed Medvedev, which seemed to make him do errors he hadn't done all match.
It's fascinating the effect a crowd can have.

In other tennis news, Andy is playing a challenger in Rennes this week, and has just beaten German Yannik Maden. Not a major win, but I think he's wanting to just get some playing time in- and challengers are a good place to get it.

Use sentences...

Quiet, please, players are ready to play

Become more emphatic

The match will not continue until we have quiet for both players..

Etc etc. Repeat them and mean them.

What usually happens is the ‘good’ crowd will turn on the ‘baddies’ and become more self policing.

Just take control of the situation and put them in their place. The Chair Umpire is the boss on the court and he should show it. Last night he seemed somewhat cowed by the behaviour.
