New thread, looking forward to finale, but wishing it really was the last episode, with all storylines and characters ending satisfactorily.

OP posts:

I hope that's not a spoiler @YoutubeZoom Hmm

MotionActivatedDog · 17/08/2021 14:40

June is driving home and raises her right hand up to the top of the steering wheel - and we see that she isn't wearing a wedding ring.

A wedding ring would be on her left hand surely? Also- very unlikely June would still have her wedding ring after being a prisoner in Gilead for 7 years.

MotionActivatedDog · 17/08/2021 14:41

@YoutubeZoom

I know it is a different show, but "if you think this has a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention."
What are you doing??
YoutubeZoom · 17/08/2021 14:43

I am not the writer, so I obviously do not know how it ends. But it would be surprising if June could just pick up her life where she left off. Again, I do not know. Perhaps she will. There is too little time in this season for it to happen. It is unlikely that in the next episode she edits a literary magazine and becomes happy with Luke again.

In some countries the wedding ring is worn on the right hand. In my youth I did some hand modelling for advertising. When my hands were photographed demonstrating the Mothercare doll's house I had to wear a ring on each hand because I had to look married in whatever country used the ad. I don't know about Canada or the USA, though, or, indeed, Gilead.
MotionActivatedDog · 17/08/2021 14:44

I don’t think any of us are under the illusion that June will just resume her pre Gilead life. Hmm

YoutubeZoom · 17/08/2021 14:44

Sorry, I should be more optimistic.

YoutubeZoom · 17/08/2021 14:45

I did not mean the ending of this season, I should have made it clear. I meant the ending in general.

@BIWI I think it’s crossed wires. Really I was questioning this post…

‘I saw the "go and see Nick and take Nicole" from Luke as "I know we can't work as a couple and you love him, but we both want Hannah back so we must do as much as we can to work together"’

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 17/08/2021 14:51

@EBearhug

I imagine marriage in Gilead, for commanders - is arranged, but given an illusion of choice, in that when they're the right sort of age, a group of commanders will have a tightly chaperoned social event where they meet carefully screened potential wives, and any interest shown will be taken as compatibility and they'll be married off pronto. Probably the potential wives get up to 3 events or so where if they're not selected, they'll be given the "option" of becoming a handmaid. And the fledgling commanders will also be aware that not finding a wife will not be good for their careers, so they can't afford to be too fussy.
Not a spoiler but world building from the testaments - commanders know which daughters are available for marriage and the highest level get to pick the prettiest/most high status girls, whereas lower status men get matched with whoever. Daughters don't get turned into handmaids without cause. Aunts are in charge of handmaids and daughters.

she doesn't just say "conceived in love" she tells Luke, Nick has been there for her and helped her. She also in so many words tells Luke if the chance comes he too should move on.

MargoLovebutter · 17/08/2021 14:57

Did anyone else find the long, long, long close up of June's face as she drove back after her meeting with Nick very annoying? I get that Elizabeth Moss is a talented actress with a wide range of facial expressions and even micro-expressions but it felt a bit heavy-handed to me. Like I was being hit with a mallet and told that I would emote with her!

Sorry @MotionActivatedDog - I meant her left hand, not her right hand! Blush
BIWI · 17/08/2021 15:03

She may well not have a wedding ring after all this time, that's true, but I thought it was too much of a coincidence to see her hand like that, so much in the forefront of the frame, immediately after we'd seen Nick put his wedding ring back on.

JaninesEyePatch · 17/08/2021 15:44
@BIWI all I can find is that she tells him Nicole was born from love, nothing about how she really feels about Nick now?
Luke seems like a pretty clued up guy. I'm sure he has probably sensed that June still loves Nick.

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 17/08/2021 15:50

You’d think at least one of the crew, watching the series, would have realised they’re overdoing the long June shots.

AuntLydiasNewHairdo · 17/08/2021 18:49

I really didnt get any indication that June and Luke believe their telationship to be over or without hope. Obviously it's complicated.

goinggently · 17/08/2021 18:49

Blessed day!

Loved last episode and cannot wait for Sunday!

Avoiding reading the whole thread in case of accidental spoilers!

AuntLydiasNewHairdo · 17/08/2021 19:52

Pretty sure there are no spoilers here.

houseofstark · 17/08/2021 19:52

The actor who plays Luke was in Black Widow recently. Is that what you’re thinking of?

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 17/08/2021 20:04

I really enjoy this thread.

I get as much out of this as I do from the programme, and now I have this site too, thanks, BIWI the-handmaids-tale.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Episodes

fab.

Pretty sure there are no spoilers here.
If there were they’d get reported & deleted ASAP. I’m not clicking on any links though, just in case.
BIWI · 17/08/2021 20:06

It's a great site for catching up/reminding you of what's happened - and just general fan stuff!

I like listening to the podcast too (although the giggling of those women really irritates me Smile)
