Evening Brew Cake
Setting up the bingeing thread which, same as last year, works parallel to the concurrent one which is TV pace.
This thread is for those of us with no willpower to discuss the whole series freely.
Episode 2 with the loose women references and Pat/Kitty's dance routine was joyous was my favourite from the six.
But the whole series works - whether it's willy-shaped chess pieces or butt jokes. It's just a lovely ensemble. I also thought Mary had better lines/more to her part this time around.

But what an ending to the series! it was so lovely! beautifully done!

dannyrojas · 12/08/2021 10:19

We are up to episode 4. Laughed like a drain at Robin and Julian putting the music on and dimming the lights for Mikes boss. Also very much enjoyed the Captain and cocksock as well as him knowing Fanny better than anyone. Him kissing his pillow was very sweet as well.

Definitely our favourite episode so far this series although we did also enjoy all things Kitty - nightmare on Elm Street, dancing with Pat.

Alison seems very down this series - not sure if that's cos of the awful jumpers, the social distanced filming or it's deliberate. Whilst obviously she had no family or she wouldn't have been able to inherit, making it a pivotal plot point in this one makes it so sad that she lost everyone except Mike before she was 30 :( and even worse if that Lucy is a wrong 'un.

thank god for the ghosts I say - reminds me of the Christmas one where she just wanted the carol as her Christmas tradition and it was the Ghosts who joined her.

MoonahStone · 12/08/2021 12:55

Thought I'd find you all here Grin

Rather enjoyed that and already looking forward to watching the episodes for a second time. Agree with what others have said about Mary being a much more developed character this time around.

We didn't actually see how Kitty died so perhaps more to go next series for that story line. Please let there be a next series.

LemonViolet · 12/08/2021 13:49

They’ve left Mary’s story as well. There is definitely fodder for a s4. A lot of the reviews I’ve read seem to think it should go out on a high though. Noooo we want more!!!

tintodeverano2 · 12/08/2021 16:25

I absolutely love this. I hope they'll do another series.

SequinsandStiIettos · 12/08/2021 17:13

There's always the American remake Wink out in the Autumn...

Hmmmmm. I am sceptical about a US remake, but open to the concept.

MurunB · 12/08/2021 18:29

Can anyone explain what the scary dream was all about?

Budapestdreams · 12/08/2021 19:56

I'm not sure about the dream either, a few ideas but nothing definite.
Maybe Mary was a witch after all!!

Bloodypunkrockers · 12/08/2021 20:14

@Budapestdreams

I think that'll be the twist

She was a witch

Like Elizabeth Gadge in Inside No9 (which Jim Howick was in)

IHateCoronavirus · 12/08/2021 20:15

Well she was going on incantation to protect the house from the woodworm men!

IHateCoronavirus · 12/08/2021 20:15

Doing not going

KimikosNightmare · 12/08/2021 23:36

@HandforthParishCouncilClerk

Finished! Nice to see more of Humphrey. It’s a shame the plague ghosts aren’t in it this series though. Loved Pat and Kitty’s dancing!
I've only watched 2 but loving them so far.

That's a pity about the plague pit ghosts though- they were great.

LemonViolet · 13/08/2021 04:48

I think the plague pit is a victim of Covid sadly

Although I like to think maybe they got sucked off en masse after having their stories told

sashh · 13/08/2021 05:15

I have found my people.

I'd recorded the first episode and then it said all the episodes were on iplayer and that was it.

I hope Mary isn't a witch, heretics were burned not witches in England, Scotland is another matter.

I was wondering about the plague pits, at least if it is covid related they may be back, and there is certain irony that characters that were killed by an epidemic can't be in the show because of an epidemic.

sashh · 13/08/2021 05:37

Pandemic, I meant pandemic.

SequinsandStiIettos · 13/08/2021 05:40

Ooh that's a faux-pas - I thought Mary was definitely meant to have undergone a witch trial but she has a West Country accent. She must have been found guilty of treason as well as witchcraft like the witch of Ipswich.

Themeparklover · 13/08/2021 05:40

I thought this series was much better than series 2, if anything I wish it was 8 episodes instead of 6 or hopefully there wont be as long of a wait for the next series

sashh · 13/08/2021 08:05

@SequinsandStiIettos

I don't think it is meant to be historically accurate.

sashh · 13/08/2021 08:37

On the historical aspect, it did bother me when Robin was saying what food he likes, pig bum, cow bum, bum, and chips.

No Robin you died about a thousand years before potatoes came to Europe.

Budapestdreams · 13/08/2021 09:22

More like tens of thousands of years before potatoes. He hunted mammoths (or so he claims).

PerpetualStudent · 13/08/2021 09:37

I think ‘witches’ were burnt in some places in England - there’s lots of legends around ‘witch’ burnings in Norfolk for e.g www.edp24.co.uk/news/weird-norfolk-the-witch-s-heart-of-kings-lynn-1009948

I binged last night - one of the moments that really hit me was Alison’s reaction when they uncovered Lucy was a fraud - she was so upset in that moment when she leaned in to Mike for a hug and it was so believable. I think they did a really good job of balancing the tone between sillier slapstick/sit com stuff and emotional storylines in this series.

LemonViolet · 13/08/2021 19:40

Yes the line when Fanny called out that maybe Alison was focusing on Kitty’s sister issues to distract from her own was well played I thought.

I still don’t buy that Alison was so trusting though. I know they reasoned it out, that just because something is strange/unlikely doesn’t mean it’s not also true, but ghosts exist=this really obvious scam is real doesn’t really work does it!

SequinsandStiIettos · 13/08/2021 22:18

I don't think it is meant to be historically accurate.
I think it's simply because the writers did so many series of horrible histories, that I would have expected it to be accurate. It's probably ridiculous and unfair I know but I would have expected due diligence Grin although I am well aware of Terry Deary's inconsistencies

Maybe Stone Age Britons made “chips” with some other root or tuber Smile
