Room to improve - Dermott the architect

This show annoys me so much. I know it's old but it's on when I take my lunch and I just find the architect so infuriating. He seems to want to change things part way through builds, argues with builders and the owners. Denies mistakes he's made etc

I feel like he gets by just winging things!

@Garman

The funniest thing about Dermot is that he went around for years putting glass walls onto people's houses in the living areas without a second thought, then when he put one on his own house he discovered you have to light the garden outside or it turns into a giant mirror at night. I wonder does he feel bad about all the people he gave giant nighttime mirrors to 😁
Yes that was quite a funny moment.

I didn't love the end product of his own house. There have been other designs I've loved more.

@EarringsandLipstick

Not sure how many of you are in Ireland but he is always being stopped & asked questions about house renovations & design. He's really good about it.

I saw him on a train a few years ago. God he'd a queue of people coming up to him the whole journey (Dublin to Cork train!). He was sketching designs on napkins!

We were either on the same train or this happens to him all the time. Grin

“finally, we get a show about Dermot Bannon designing a house for a man named Dermot Bannon (Sunday, RTÉ1). Dramatically speaking, this is like the bit at the end of Fight Club where Tyler Durden is revealed to be a figment of Edward Norton’s imagination and we get to watch Edward Norton punch himself in the face for an hour. So this is the episode in which Dermot Bannon punches himself in the face for an hour. We knew it would come to this.”

😂 amazing

Molehillfromamountain · 02/08/2021 23:03

Ah I do agree he does have some infuriating clients, I couldn't have worked with the lady with the china cabinets on the farm. I planned my kitchen renovation for about 2 years, it seems some of his clients wake up one day and decide to tear the house down the next Confused I do enjoy watching them though for sure!

artquejtion · 02/08/2021 23:10

I'm enjoying it, have to laugh when Dermot gets all huffy when a client doesn't agree with his idea, 'I want it this way, it's how I see it in my head, and I won't let the client do anything different'.

I do like most of his design, the ones that work the best are the ones where the owners do follow his ideas though.

I would love to see the Daniel O'Donnell one and you now have me intrigued about the Feng Shui one, has that already been on or it it one that was shown on RTE ?

PearlFriday · 02/08/2021 23:11

Oh those IT articles are funny. "Louise" 😂

artquejtion · 02/08/2021 23:14

Aghh, the IT is behind a paywall, bummer.

Anyone watching today's episode? I hate the house he's taken the couple to...it looks like it's been deserted and needs to be knocked down

Yes, I agree, it's dreadful !
BigSandyBalls2015 · 05/08/2021 08:06

I loved the one where the woman was super flirty with him .... he looked so awkward bless him.

doscervesas · 05/08/2021 11:11

I've just watched an early one where the clients kept wanting more and more till the budget had gone up to over 500 euros then back down again to their original 200 or so. (It was a big house).

During the build they had a wall moved because the client's father thought it would be better, then had to move it back.

I felt sorry for Dermot and even more sorry for the builder.

It's funny when they disagree strongly over kitchens. I get that he sees it as part of the design and wants something sleek and modern, but ultimately the clients will have to live with it and use it for years.

Mamette · 05/08/2021 12:15

I always found it bizarre how involved he gets with kitchens. The layout, fair enough. But the actual presses?

Sometimes he weighs in on sofa choices too Confused

Horehound · 06/08/2021 08:48

That does sound infuriating @doscervesas.

Yes he is overly invested in what soft furnishings the clients pick. He went curtain shopping with one...why?! He is to design the house, they can decorate to their taste!

OP posts:
artquejtion · 06/08/2021 12:20

If it was my house, I would like the idea that he gets involved in both the architecture and the interior design. He really does get over invested in the kitchens, but I can see why, there have been a few red horrors where he was completely overruled and the end result was dreadful.

BarcelonaFreddie · 06/08/2021 12:56

I'm obsessed with this programme. I've watched around thirty episodes this week alone.
It's my new very best favourite thing.
I love how the client can never ever get hold of Dermot and how he charms / bulldozes them into having what he wants.
I also love the relationships with builders he's worked with a few times before - Ian, Padraig and Peter etc.
It's so entertaining.

doscervesas · 06/08/2021 13:13

I'm so glad you posted about this programme, Horehound. I hadn't heard of it and am now binge watching the past series.

I've just watched the Daniel O'Donnell one. He was so funny and his wife a delight.

artquejtion · 06/08/2021 13:22

Where are you binge watching it ? I can only see one programme per day on Channel 5.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 06/08/2021 13:36

I have seen it but I suspect it just 'TV' where they create conflict for effect.

I used to watch Gordon Ramsey 'sort out' a restaurant and he would start out OK improving layouts and simplifying the menu and then on opening night he would fill the place to capacity and cause it to fail so he could shout and swear at them. I stopped watching it.

doscervesas · 06/08/2021 14:43

artquejtion

On the channel 5 website. You'll find series 1-12!

BarcelonaFreddie · 06/08/2021 17:58

Or you can download them on Sky.
