Room to improve - Dermott the architect

This show annoys me so much. I know it's old but it's on when I take my lunch and I just find the architect so infuriating. He seems to want to change things part way through builds, argues with builders and the owners. Denies mistakes he's made etc

I feel like he gets by just winging things!

@Pegasusmail

We live near one of the houses he designed. It's just a big black box attached to a lovely cottage.

But I do love Demot.

I drive past a house that was on the programme. An old farmhouse that was fabulous when completed. It was an awkward site as right on the road. The exterior hasn't held up well at all. The render was really pale & now is very discoloured.
PearlFriday · 02/08/2021 14:34

oh yes, they always seem to be able to find an extra 80,000 in some back pocket somewhere.

Their original budget is never their real limit.

Although you'd hope that after the cameras leave they're not thinking, ok, gorgeous house we have here but now none of our dc can have braces or go to college.

LavenderAskew · 02/08/2021 14:37

Misspelled Dermot's name there - wasn't deliberate.😄

I also meant "I do remember watching "

Gah!!

Will look out for George Clark mentioning his height. As I said I've only seem a few programmes with him in, but I do prefer him. He seems to be interested in learning about articture. Unlike Dermot who acts like the conveyer belt glass box builds shiuld not questioned

PearlFriday · 02/08/2021 14:39

George Clarke is also an architect but he is very handy with a saw and some wood. He's very creative in a practical way too. He can make foldaway partitions, beds and tables in half an hour. What a guy! Grin

I live near one of his designs too. It's an eyesore as it sticks out like a sore thumb.

I don't like Dermot. (But hide it well 😄)

Horehound · 02/08/2021 14:52

Lol this is so funny.

The one with the wall error and the drainage issue ended up costing so much more and when the girl was reviewing the costs to the camera at the end it was like "and the customer chose the xyz pump for the toilet so that added 5k to the budget"
Or something but failed to mention they had to choose it because of dermots fuck up!

@PearlFriday

oh no, that sounds like covering ground that george clarke has covered.

I love george clarke. He's six foot four, did he mention that.

Yes but in a different country.
LavenderAskew · 02/08/2021 17:12

I think he'd still be 6'4" in Ireland. Not like the gravity is stronger here or measurements differ.

topwings · 02/08/2021 18:16

And the designs seem to be the same every time- big glass box extension

Dermot did a show about doing up his own house and he was going to add the glass extension as per.

He visited a house with a glass extension and was horrified that it becomes a giant mirror at night - the whole of Ireland got on twitter to remind him how many houses he had done this to.

Oh yes he learned the lesson in time for his own house

Yes saw that (despite my dislike I still watch - like a punishment) but it wasn't till he got told by some other boffin architect (he was a lecturer wasn't he? Quite an impressive career history). I'm sure there was a lighting man in the program earlier that had same similar and Dermot had been his usual rude fecker to
Molehillfromamountain · 02/08/2021 19:07

DH and I play a game when we watch this. You get a point for every time he puts in exposed concrete, a full glass wall(corner), courtyard, sunken/split level extension, argues with a client, pisses off a builder, loses control of the budget...If it was a drinking game you'd be quite merry by the end of the episode!
I don't know how he still gets clients, they must not have a TV.

Horehound · 02/08/2021 20:04

Yes a courtyard is a thing for him too isn't it?

Well maybe this is where I'm going wrong... Not playing it as a drinking game which is obvious now as to what this show really is haha

I know I sound like I dont like him or the show (I love both), but i do laugh when he wants to show the person/people how something will work and for example he sends them up to donegal where it's facing this fantastic scenery and everyone's wowed but you're like 'but they live in the middle of Dublin!'

PearlFriday · 02/08/2021 21:30

Did you see when he did Daniel and Majellas house. I was shock by how tight Daniel O'Donnell was! He has millions and he still policed the budget v carefully!!

EarringsandLipstick · 02/08/2021 21:31

@PearlFriday I finished the Tramore episode. I wasn't really wowed by the house overall - I mean, the views were great but overall thought it was less than he's done otherwise.

But I can't agree about the couple & Dermot. It was thanks for him insisting that they got the result they did eg with the terrace not decking - and they admitted that.

Equally the front-facing bedroom came about because of the roof issues & Dermot pushed that one through too.

And your woman & painting the floors! No, in this case her Feng Shui was seriously bloody annoying. Talk about eejitery!

Interesting viewing all the same!

Ah no. I just can't agree with this. I think he does amazing work. He does elements of what you describe but is also so often hampered by irritating clients & their own lack of forethought.

Yes! That was a great episode. Daniel was hilarious!!

I don't think he wanted anything done to the house, he was saying how much he adored it from the start. She was all about the excitement of the project

I must have watched it before when it was on first but totally forgot it! It was like a brand new episode to me.

There was one in the early days where there was a major falling out. Ultimately there was legal action, the project was paused then brought to a certain point & awkwardly concluded on the programme. I wonder if that's still available to view. IIRC Dermot seemed quite upset by it all. The client wasn't in it at the end.

Garman · 02/08/2021 21:39

The funniest thing about Dermot is that he went around for years putting glass walls onto people's houses in the living areas without a second thought, then when he put one on his own house he discovered you have to light the garden outside or it turns into a giant mirror at night. I wonder does he feel bad about all the people he gave giant nighttime mirrors to 😁
