Motherland inconsistencies

I am watching the first two seasons again, having just finished the third one and I’ve noticed a couple of inconsistencies. I am happy to be corrected though.

1- in the first series Kevin says that his mother lives near Andover (I think it’s Andover, but the actual location doesn’t matter). In the third series he says that she died when he was 8.

2- in the first series Anne says she’d had an early menopause, so how did she get pregnant again in the second series (which I assume is Baby Niamh who she has had by the third series). Was there some kind of mistake/realisation that I missed?

I've just finished watching the final episode of series three. The gang are asking Liz when they are going to meet the "mythical" farmer (or something like that) and he tells Liz he wants to meet her mates...

But, but, but... they were all on their weekend away at the cottage when Liz and the farmer (Sam?) meet. Even if Sam doesn't speak to Julia, Kevin, Amanda, Meg & Anne at that point they have certainly all seen each other.

SkepticalCat · 03/07/2021 14:45

They are all talking as though they literally haven't set eyes on Sam before and vice versa.

Anythingelseintheboxpandora · 04/07/2021 01:28

Did anyone else hate the episode where Meg got really really drunk?

funtimefrank · 04/07/2021 09:14

I am not a huge fan of that episode but I like the fact Julia ends up clubbing in her joggers and also that amazing prat fall backwards down the bus stairs.

FKATondelayo · 04/07/2021 09:37

I was having dinner with friends the other day and discussing the Anne joke. We all once had jobs at that level and now are SAHM. It really resonated and I think it is very common to have different work / school gate personalities. Sometimes when you have a lot of responsibility and have to be 'on' at work all day it's relaxing to be a bit beta in other environments.

Mattspbtoast · 04/07/2021 12:04

I am sure that in series 3 Amanda says that she has two children. I have only heard her talk about Manus, so who is the other one?

mnahmnah · 04/07/2021 13:16

Yes Amanda has a daughter. Hence the episode where they spill red wine all over the carpet in the daughters very pink bedroom. I gave vague recollection of Amanda saying Georgie?!

Mattspbtoast · 04/07/2021 18:43

Oh yes, mnahmnah, that rings a bell now. Thank you

Yeah that was the worst ep for me, I’m a quiet person so actually can’t stand Meg types. She does mellow a bit though and didn’t mind her as much by series 3.

Liz is my fav and who I resonate most with, although I’m not a single mum. But I like her don’t give a fuck attitude.

HalfBrick · 05/07/2021 22:31

Oh I loved the episode where Meg was really drunk - having a 10pm meeting in Spanish and falling down the bus stairs!
I can forgive all the inconsistencies but I can't get over the casting of Julia's husband, he just looks wrong - too young? My fave line was in an early episode and there's a chap hogging a cafe table as it had a socket and Liz sarcastically saying she'd have brought her ironing.
Just thought of another one, Liz was supposed to have got off with Amanda's husband at school or something - Liz is Northern and obviously didn't grow up nearby.
Anyway, great show.

witheringrowan · 06/07/2021 12:20

The actor who plays Julia's husband is only 2 years younger than Anna Maxwell Martin. I think he just gets to be styled looking more put together and less stressed because he's usually out of the madness of looking after kids & running the household!

PearlFriday · 06/07/2021 12:26

Yeh that's like Anne having been CEO of some blue chip company, i think that Julia's husband looking so youthful and fresh is the joke!

BikeRunSki · 06/07/2021 12:29

@InMySpareTime

In the Mother's Day episode, it was World Book Day just before MD on the Sunday. The only times MD was that weekend (after the first Thursday in March) was 2005 and 2016 when WBD was 3/3 and MD was 6/3, usually there are several weeks between the two events.
That is hard core attention to detail!

Yes it is!

Swingoutsistersledge2 · 06/07/2021 13:38

This thread is making me want to re watch them all again . Brilliant series loved them all .

mnahmnah · 06/07/2021 20:17

I’ve rewatched them from the start and I think they’re even better second time. Laughed even more

I didn’t think that was Amanda’s husband, I thought it was a random woman who Amanda had in her clique, but isn’t a major part. In the episode where Julia eats spag Bol out Amanda’s bin, there’s a side story going on with Liz and this woman and doesn’t Liz end up yelling at her/ the room about this kiss?
NashvilleQueen · 07/07/2021 07:13

I really liked the man who Julia ends up working with in the cafe then ruthlessly exploits into being her PA. I would have liked him to be in more episodes.

I absolutely love the episode where Meg is pissed and out of control. You see men like that in sit coms all the time but it's extremely rare for it to be shown with women. Everyone I know has at least one horror story where you're left trying to manage a ridiculous situation because someone is just a mess.

Marian's house switch baffles me slightly and yes to Kevin's mum and the Aldershot/Fleet/grave inconsistency. I didn't notice the inconsistency with his age. And it's totally not an inconsistency about Ann. Amanda thinks she used to work at Greggs. The joke of course is that she was incredibly successful, probably more than her husband, but has given it up to look after children and be treated like shit by Amanda.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 07/07/2021 16:06

Oh that eating spaghetti Bol out of the bin is just brilliant.
Who hasn’t been an exhausted parent taking their kids to play dates and parties and been tempted to snarf some of the kids party tea?
You can just feel Julia’s discomfort and it’s so well done. 👏

desperatehousewife21 · 07/07/2021 16:26

I always eat the party food! After the kids have had what they want first obv Grin
Glad my kids are old enough to leave at parties now though.

It was a funny episode though she was STARVING!

BooseysMom · 14/07/2021 01:00

Maybe Jill is modelled on Maris Crane form Frasier? She was a big part of Frasier without ever appearing.

I can't remember who Jill is supposed to be.

Absolutely love Liz...the time she just got up and walked out of the school concert when a child started playing an instrument of some type. "Right, fuck this, I'm off"!!

Also love Kev.. the Meg out of control episode was hilarious.. "No mum left behind Julia!" He is a brilliant actor and I'm in love with the character Kev.

Also loved the episode with him and Amanda together in her shop and when they're waiting for her new website to go live, they count down the seconds and when nothing happens he goes "Yeay"! Genius.

FionnulaTheCooler · 14/07/2021 11:56

In the school trip episode was it explained why Mrs Lamb was on the trip instead of the class teacher? I've never known a member of the office admin staff to go on a trip. Mrs Lamb does remind me a lot of a certain school office staff member I know in real life though Grin.

BooseysMom · 15/07/2021 08:57

Tbf I have never known a school administrator to be as vile as Mrs Lamb! It wouldn't be the norm for one to be on a trip so they must have purposely put her on it for comedy effect.

Did anyone else hate the episode where Meg got really really drunk?

yes. It’s most uncomfortable viewing. And she cheats on her husband by snogging a man and a women.

not cool Meg. Not cool AT ALL

I only started watching this recently, and am halfway through the second series.

An inconsistency I noticed almost immediately is that it is quickly established that Julia is extremely harassed with very little support, particularly from her mother (Marion?) who Julia has a go at whilst she is having lunch with a friend.

And yet, in the very next episode (the school fundraising/auction of promises), Julia bumps into her ex-colleague at the school gate who doesn't remember Julia's name. The ex-colleague says to Julia 'oh, are these your kids, I thought they were Marion's', which shows that Julia's mother does pull her weight with looking after her grandchildren if she is known by name at the school gate.

I'm still enjoying watching it, but that really irritated me. Although I guess it shows that Julia's perspective isn't necessarily what is actually happening and she does get more support than she thinks she does.

You haven’t watched closely enough. Marion stopped childcare for Julia’s kids. With significant backlash from Julia. It is an ongoing running theme in the episodes
