Motherland inconsistencies

I am watching the first two seasons again, having just finished the third one and I’ve noticed a couple of inconsistencies. I am happy to be corrected though.

1- in the first series Kevin says that his mother lives near Andover (I think it’s Andover, but the actual location doesn’t matter). In the third series he says that she died when he was 8.

2- in the first series Anne says she’d had an early menopause, so how did she get pregnant again in the second series (which I assume is Baby Niamh who she has had by the third series). Was there some kind of mistake/realisation that I missed?

One thing that is so pathetic of me to note about the swimming episode is that Julia definitely wouldn't have to get in the pool.....they said one adult per 2 non-swimmers....Liz didn't have her baby with her so only one child for her, she could have taken one of Julia's in, and Anne only had one kid at the time too so she could have watched the other!

Wouldn't have been much of an episode though Grin

the80sweregreat · 10/06/2021 13:13

The swimming one was fab. I agree that Julia didn't have to go in ( she wasn't intending to anyway, but just fell in the water !) and I was so jealous of Liz and Amanda looking cool in swimwear! I cover up, like Anne.
It was the claustrophobic atmosphere they portrayed so well, the terrible dryers, the cramped changing rooms the noise.

Bibidy · 10/06/2021 13:28

Yesssss Amanda's body was AMAZING.

I also love the Halloween episode where they're looking for Manus and everything is going wild behind them as if they're walking through a war zone.

the80sweregreat · 10/06/2021 13:32

Halloween was another classic.
Very funny.

Turquoisesol · 10/06/2021 16:12

Halloween is the best episode I would say. So funny

the80sweregreat · 10/06/2021 16:15

Poor Lee mead. If only he had bumped into Julia first and not Liz!! Lol

Grellbunt · 10/06/2021 16:17

I assumed the Anne thing was a joke - that she's just the type to worry and assume she has had early menopause and then as a result get "caught out" with another pregnancy....

Grellbunt · 10/06/2021 17:39

@TheReturnOfTheMaud

I wasn’t convinced that anyone could (presumably) have enough presence to hold down a high-powered job and yet let themselves be treated as a skivvy by Amanda. That’s not about any trade-off between career and motherhood, that’s about personality.
It would have been more believable if she'd been senior in Legal or something

Liz wasn't up for watching her child/children I thought??
the80sweregreat · 10/06/2021 18:08

Liz was more interested in finding the guy whose wallet she had found!
She said to Julia she had to watch her kids as it wasn't a ' drop off' party. That's when Kev produced a swimsuit for her. Liz was with her own boys.

Karwomannghia · 10/06/2021 20:27

Julia’s Baggy swimsuit was brilliant

mammmamia · 10/06/2021 21:00

Hahaha
I need to watch them all again!
Haven’t watched all of the latest series yet. Trying to make them last!
The Xmas special was also brilliant.

Thirtyrock39 · 15/06/2021 22:10

Anne to me always seems the most well off financially though - huge house and car , was house hunting in sports day episode and looking at million pound properties so I can believe she was very successful career wise pre kids but then had a transformation into earth mother / door mat but had already saved enough to be very comfortable
I think the school gate can make a lot of us revert to our childhood personalities and it's very removed from the world of work and all competitor is often around children and parenting rather than careers - Anne is a bit of a super mum on paper 'I'd die for my kids' checking Halloween sweets, taking notes at parents evening etc so has possibly swapped being major successful at work for this

viques · 16/06/2021 17:54

@midsomermurderess

Ann's job was meant to be a surprise. Blimey, you have to wonder sometimes.
It’s like the episode when Anne drove up in a HUGE car, The One With The Car Pool, I can’t remember if she said how the car was financed, but a few jaws dropped so it was clearly something of an upgrade.
queenofarles · 17/06/2021 09:31

Oh I love Ann in season three! Grin
I always thought She had a very interesting career pre Motherhood, so seeing she worked for Glaxo smith was no surprise,
what I really don’t get is why Julia is such a messy slob, in season two we saw she had a cleaner so why is she always struggling? and Paul turned out to be alright in the end, very understanding about her crush.

Bibidy · 17/06/2021 15:15

One thing I always think always think is that their kids are clearly not all the same ages yet always seem to be at the same parties etc etc as if the older ones at least are in the same class.

In the episode with the nits, Kevin, Liz, Amanda and Anne all get affected by their kids being sent home from the same table in the classroom as Ivy but some of them are obviously loads younger. Plus Ivy looks about 13 in real life!

Too much time on my hands Grin.

Where can I watch all three series?
Is it on iplayer or BritBox or Netflix?

BBC iPlayer.
mayjuneapril · 17/06/2021 16:03

Yes I’m confused about the ages of the kids.

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 17/06/2021 16:11

@Bibidy
Thank you! I’ll make a start this evening! (and carefully watching for these inconsistencies)

Bibidy · 17/06/2021 16:13

@mayjuneapril

Yes I’m confused about the ages of the kids.
I'm just watching the one where they all go to look at secondary schools now and they are ALL there doing the open days.

There is no way Liz's older child is in year 6, why would she be there? Anne and Amanda's kids also appear way younger than 11.

Also, spotted another one from this episode....Liz has just found out she's still accidentally married to her ex Lee due to not getting the Decree Absolute. She mentions she's been married to him for 8 years in total by mistake when she usually says they were married 4 years....so they've been split up & presumed divorced for 4 years...but their youngest child isn't 4 yet? He's in a pram and starting nursery at the beginning of the most recent series.

Thirtyrock39 · 17/06/2021 18:06

I thought the writers said they deliberately focused on the parents and the kids were very much supposed to be background so i never pay much attention to the changes in kids, random ages etc
Also I think the polite was years ago - 2017 or possibly earlier??? It definitely was a long wait between each series series two was autumn 2019 so it's nearly two years on

Yeah totally get that it's a show about the parents and not the kids. Just always thought there was no need to try and build in these links between the kids when it could have just been the parents who met at the school gates, but I guess a lot of the story lines wouldn't exist if that was the case!
SheepyToaster · 17/06/2021 21:42

@Turquoisesol

I agree I thought it was a good joke. I did a very intellectual job pre sahm and think people who meet me now would have no idea and underestimate what I could do. Mums are underestimated
I think this too. I thought the joke was that the woman who thought she was queen bee was a shop owner and unskilled whilst Anne was low key but previously held a decent job.
DobbyTheHouseElk · 18/06/2021 11:19

Do people really not get the “joke” with Anne’s job. Amanda doesn’t believe she was a high flyer pre kids. That’s the point.

SAHM really get shat on from a height don't they!!!
