I noticed that the last thread was full, so I hope no-one minds that I've started a new one!

It was a Christmas special a couple of years ago.

Maireas · 03/06/2021 09:13

That was Christmas 2019. It wasn't particularly good, you didn't miss much.

Not particularly good is being very polite. it was bloody dreadful.
AppleKatie · 03/06/2021 11:59

SMJ’s storyline in that one was beyond ludicrous.

The idea that characters would engage even slightly in that nonsense or indeed that she would have even made it that far north on her own was fanciful at best.

Toddlerteaplease · 03/06/2021 12:20

Agreed. It was completely ridiculous. And amazing how many emergencies cropped up.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 03/06/2021 12:25

Aye. The Hebrides was not the finest moment for the midwives.

That belonged to the sheep. 🐑 🐑

Taswama

"I really enjoyed the 10 year special"

Me too.

Reminded me of how good it used to be!

I know - the standing stones and the deer? Yet she continues to live?

I agree that the retrospective showed what quality, female centric drama it once was. Never twee, always engaging and touching.
I'm not keen on the more recent religious issues, on the Hebrides they were dour Presbyterians, the Catholic nuns last episode were vicious and deceitful etc.
Generally, though too much Dr Turner.

AppleKatie · 03/06/2021 14:24

It’s not that I find the catholic nuns/Presbyterians unbelievable so much as the order of st Raymond Nonatus astonishingly modern by comparison...

Although they are between a rock and a hard place there. It’s a drama and we have to have sympathy with our protagonists or it wouldn’t work at all.

Maireas · 03/06/2021 14:32

True, @AppleKatie, that's why I liked Sr Evangeline, she was quite acerbic, but a devoted midwife. A layered character.

OP posts:
AppleKatie · 03/06/2021 15:04

Yes that’s true. In a way the nature of turn over of characters in such a long running drama is difficult - there is a need to find so many different types of believable and yet sympathetic humans in that context.

Maireas · 03/06/2021 15:12

I think Phyllis has been a good addition. She's a great character, and they've allowed Miss Higgins to develop as well.

OP posts:
AppleKatie · 03/06/2021 15:23

Yes I agree both superbly acted.

So many memorable Phyllis moments. She started as a bit of a caricature but quickly grew into a real, authentic character.
SheldonesqueTheBstard · 03/06/2021 15:37

Phyllis is probably my reason for watching.

diddl · 03/06/2021 16:54

I like Phyllis as well.

Can't forget Millicent Trilby Higgins though!

NoIdontwanttoseeyourknob · 03/06/2021 18:40

Just catching up on the anniversary special - how very odd to see Sister Monica Joan’s hair!

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 03/06/2021 18:50

Never diddl

I love her almost as much.

Promise. It increased with the Trilby.

I’ll catch up on the catch up at the weekend.

JumpLeadsForTwo · 03/06/2021 19:16

I love Phyllis - reminds me of my great Aunt who never married, even wears the type of clothes my aunt did, and had the same hair style.

Maireas · 03/06/2021 19:22

Women like Phyllis have been the backbone of the NHS. There would be no superbugs on her watch, and she'd give covid short shrift.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 03/06/2021 20:02

Phyllis is so much more believable than Trixie... I like Trixie, just find it hard to believe she would be there after 10years.

Maireas · 03/06/2021 20:08

I can't warm to Trixie, I find her voice very annoying.

Was Timothy superimposed onto that couch between Dr T and Miss Higgins? They were sat 2m apart with him weirdly in the middle...
