I noticed that the last thread was full, so I hope no-one minds that I've started a new one!

To be fair mumsnet/internet/Netflix didn’t exist back then so we could all probably see a while productions worth of costumes in the time not doing the above frees up 😂

Soubriquet · 31/05/2021 07:42

I guess so. Thank god for the 21st century Grin

Soubriquet · 31/05/2021 07:53

Jeez it’s so obvious that Mrs Buckle is holding a doll

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 31/05/2021 07:58

So we already have quite a few storylines set up for the next series (including the Christmas special)? It was a good episode (little Robert was so cute) but not the usual climax?

I think it was probably the widower's family who owned the condemned flats (didn't he say the other week when he popped in to see Sister Julienne that he was in the area on business for his father?).

Soubriquet · 31/05/2021 08:02

I think that’s the most words I’ve ever heard out of Angela and May. And not one yaaaaay

WheeshtYerMansplaining · 31/05/2021 08:30

Stephen McGann is really into his role as Dr Turner.

Soubriquet · 31/05/2021 08:32

@WheeshtYerMansplaining

Stephen McGann is really into his role as Dr Turner.
Do you ever wonder if he sees someone sick in public and immediately dons his doctor self diagnosing whilst going “now you see Heidi, what I’m doing now, is just palpating the stomach to see if the patient feels any pain”
JumpLeadsForTwo · 31/05/2021 08:38

With Tim leaving, there is certainly room for another foster child!!

Soubriquet · 31/05/2021 08:45

I bloody hope not

They get enough attention as it is without another “poor little soul” that needs fostering

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 31/05/2021 09:01

That wouldn't be very ethical though would it? Not with Nancy working with the Turners?

EBearhug · 31/05/2021 09:57

Yes, it was. His regular donation to Nonnatus House is in reparation for all the ill his family has done over the last couple of centuries. (And so that there's an on-going connection for Trixie to end up forgiving him and marrying him.)

SoupDragon · 31/05/2021 09:59

It sounded like they owned them but are not the ones renting them out to the families. I think they rent them to someone else who then rents them out so they are unaware of the conditions when people complain to the "landlord"

I loved they actually sounded like kids who have been forced to learn lines and not I mpossibly talented future award winners.
woodhill · 31/05/2021 11:28

I like the bits where no one is talking and they play pop music with different scenes but this series had so little of that and only the odd bit of Gerry and Pacemakers from 1963.

So much fab music in 1966

I enjoyed the 10 year special

SheldonesqueEstDansLaGalaxie · 31/05/2021 12:41

The mam of the wee fella with Downs - Blanche? Reminded me on Susan Fleetwood (as Rose Kray) when Blanche spoke about her baby being beautiful and not going into a home.

The Buckle woman made me cry. The lucky woman bit.

And sister mplacenta’s margins.

Loved Fred’s pep talk.

Still can’t be arsed with the Turner lot.

Nancy.

Reg and the pram. I broke myself. Smile

Babies are blessings. Even if they came into my life with four legs, a woof and a tail Smile

There will never be enough love and there cannot be too much.

Indeed.

2old2beamum · 31/05/2021 13:22

Have spoken with several friends who have had the pleasure of parenting a child with Down Syndrome both adopted and birth felt the final episode brilliant and sensitive. On the comments regarding Dr Turner using the term Down Syndrome I can assure you I was training in 1962 and we were told never use the term mongol, it was either DS or trisomy 21. Sorry it was the last episode .

Soubriquet · 31/05/2021 13:23

Where did the term mongol come from anyway?

CaptainMyCaptain · 31/05/2021 13:30

@Soubriquet

Where did the term mongol come from anyway?
I think it was a reference to the shape of the eyes - Mongolian.
CaptainMyCaptain · 31/05/2021 13:31

So racist as well.

Soubriquet · 31/05/2021 13:31

Ah I get it now.

Yes, an awful term and racist to boot

JumpLeadsForTwo · 31/05/2021 13:31

@Soubriquet

Where did the term mongol come from anyway?
Because of the similarities to facial characteristics of some "Mongoloid" or East Asian people - Ghengus Khan was a famous Mongol leader
SoupDragon · 31/05/2021 13:31

Yes, utterly horrendous!

Binglebong · 31/05/2021 13:33

It was, mongol meant they looked mongolise. Same as Siamese (conjoined) twins as the first many knew about them were some from Siam. It was trying to relate things to something they knew about rather than being nasty, it just ended up that way.

theresnoonequitelikegrandma · 31/05/2021 13:38

I had an older brother with DS - born in 1950s and I remember my DM telling me that when he was born (at home) the midwife just wrapped him in a blanket and placed him in the cot, saying 'You won't want to feed this one - kinder not to.' Needless to say, she did not agree! Sadly, he died aged 17 (when I was 7) but I know he had a happy life, despite some of the attitudes of the time.

2old2beamum · 31/05/2021 13:59

thereisnoonequitelikegrandma yes I can remember mums saying to me "they told me to put him/her in a home and have another one." totally awful. Hope you have happy memories of your big brother.
