I noticed that the last thread was full, so I hope no-one minds that I've started a new one!

I did wonder if it was going to be!

Elderflower14 · 30/05/2021 21:31

I'm watching the Special.... I have so many memories over the last ten years... One that stands out was the 2017 Christmas Special... It was just before my DP died. I said on the previous thread that I lost ds1 at birth. For Christmas 2017 DPs eldest daughter gave me a framed gift of the stars on the night that both my boys were born.
The episode at Christmas was when Valerie thought the baby had died and it started crying in her medical bag. I kept saying to DP why did they get their baby back? Why didn't I?? 😔 😔 😔 DP died 4 weeks later..

IsolaPribby · 30/05/2021 21:39

@Elderflower14 I am so sorry Flowers

AgeLikeWine · 30/05/2021 21:42

@Maireas

Dr Turner once again being very advanced with attitude to disabilities.
Indeed.

The show is supposed to be set in the mid 1960s, yet nobody smokes, nobody uses language or displays attitudes which would now be considered racist, or language about people with disabilities which would now be considered offensive. It is, as my grandad would have said, too daft to laugh at.

PurpleWh1teGreen · 30/05/2021 21:42

ThanksElderflower

EastWestWhosBest · 30/05/2021 21:45

Oh Elderflower. I don’t have words.

SheldonesqueEstDansLaGalaxie · 30/05/2021 21:49

Elderflower Flowers

EastWestWhosBest · 30/05/2021 21:57

I can’t cope with everyone talking in their own accents.

CaptainMyCaptain · 30/05/2021 22:03

I agree that almost everyone smoked back then but it's not true that everyone was racist or used offensive language about disabled people. Some people did but that's not how I was brought up at that time. I was born in 1955.

@CaptainMyCaptain , I'm glad that was how you were brought up, but sadly, prevalent opinions and values were different. The example of the racism towards Nurse Anderson would have sadly been commonplace.

@GeorgeandHarold66

Are the turners going to volunteer to foster Collette now too do you think? They can have triplets!
Got to be
@CaptainMyCaptain , I'm glad that was how you were brought up, but sadly, prevalent opinions and values were different. The example of the racism towards Nurse Anderson would have sadly been commonplace.
I know that racism and homophobia etc existed but if it was universal nothing would ever have changed. I lived through that era and can even remember the bomb damaged housing from the earlier series. There were always some more enlightened people who hopefully have influenced others for the better although, sadly, we still have a long way to go. My parents weren't intellectuals or activists, they were ordinary working people.

Dr Turner's constant mansplaining is tedious but it isn't surprising that someone with progressive ideas in one area would have similar forward looking opinions in another. The 1960s was a decade noted for rapid changes in society and values and there was a bigger generation gap than there us now but it had to start somewhere.

Maireas · 30/05/2021 22:39

Do you think that's what they're trying to do with Dr Turner? Show the social advancement of the era? Maybe, it just seems a bit clumsy to attribute it to one character.

There would have been enthusiasm for formula feeding in the sixties which seems strangely absent. For a time HCP were telling mothers how superior it was.

Although I think Truxie suggested Mr A could try disposable nappies, but "they'd probably cause nappy rash".

SoupDragon · 30/05/2021 23:27

I think they did the promotion of formula milk in a previous series. Now it just seems to be accepted - I'm sure there have been casual references to mothers choosing formula. They might have to be careful to make sure it doesn't come across as promotion!

Sunbird24 · 30/05/2021 23:44

Much love to you @Elderflower14 Flowers

I liked that episode, not too Turner-tastic (a while 18 mins before he appeared in person, have they been reading our thread?), not a single yay to be heard, couple of cute babies, humorous bedbugs…

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 31/05/2021 01:12

I see they still managed to shoehorn in the yay kids (and silent Teddy rawr!) in costumes. I thought we'd covered Tim going away to uni already but no!

Is there a quota for cute costumed kids per series?

Soubriquet · 31/05/2021 07:21

Watching now Grin

Haven’t seen the tedious Dr Mansplainer yet but there’s still time

Yes. He's a dramatic device but I agree it comes across as clunky.
CaptainMyCaptain · 31/05/2021 07:30

The Turner children dressed up and performed TWICE. Totally unnecessary and cringe worthy.

theresnoonequitelikegrandma · 31/05/2021 07:34

Watching the special 10 year anniversary programme just reminded me of the great characters we've lost and the fact that there was always something to touch me and often make me cry. Didn't think I'd noticed the social distancing until the old episodes made it really obvious.😢. Going to have to rewatch the old episodes on iplayer now!

Makes you wonder how Shelagh has time

She’s supposed to be a practising nurse and a mother but yet still has time to sew four costumes
