Oh the absolute irony of the words of the character played by Dominic West in this trailer!! Wasn't he start shagging Lily James when he was filming this TV series???

This will be on BBC from 9th May - looks good.

@MotherOfGodWeeFella

There was a fella with the surname Fox, but he's not related to the posh acting Foxes. I like Lily James, she just needs to stay away from creepy married men.
Had merged your user name & message when first reading & read it as "there was a wee fella with the surname Fox" & thinking isn't he actually quite tall?

Also dating Laura Carmichael (Edith)?

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 15/05/2021 15:55

Apparently so. I didn't recognise him, but then I was late to the party with Downton and didn't see the first two or three series.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/05/2021 17:56

Joanna David was in Downton Abbey as the Duchess of Yeovil, according to IMDB. She is Edward Fox's wife and mother of Emilia Fox. Closest I can see!

Maireas · 15/05/2021 18:46

So Downton was not Fox free!

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 15/05/2021 19:02

Ha ha ha!

reprehensibleme · 15/05/2021 20:45

Joanna David played 'the girl' in a really old but excellent version of Rebecca (must be 40 years ago.). She was wonderful in it. Six degrees of separation and all that.

reprehensibleme · 15/05/2021 20:48

I've just checked and it was 1979 ffs and Jeremy Brett was Max, and Anna Massey was Mrs Danvers. Jeez I'm old......... Grin

Maireas · 16/05/2021 08:39

I enjoyed the last episode, I thought it was well done. I do wonder what happened to poor little Moira, though.

Zzelda · 16/05/2021 09:28

Hicham as Fabrice was so wrong! Not tall enough for a start

I always pictured Fabrice as fairly short but dynamic and very sexy. Not sure why, though. Maybe in my head he's Napoleon Confused

WyldStallions · 16/05/2021 09:52

I found the women's bushy eyebrows an irritation. In the 20s and 30s they would have been plucked into a fine arc or pencilled on. Why do they never change actor's eyebrows nowadays?

Some of you might be interested in The Bolter, a biography of the woman who supposedly inspired the character. It’s by her great-granddaughter, Frances Osborne, ex-wife of George.

Same, Zzelda.

I found Fabrice a horrible & unattractive character & wondered what Linda saw in him.

Mind you, I also wondered what Nancy saw in Gaston Palewski-or at least why she put up with being one of many.

Andante57 · 16/05/2021 12:59

Maybe she held out hope that he would, in the end, prefer her.
The day he announced his engagement to Helen-Violette was the day she felt the first pain which heralded the cancer which would kill her.

Tulipomania · 16/05/2021 13:12

This Fabrice was more reminiscent of Hercule Poirot than a sexy French Duke...

Well she moved to Paris in 1946 & he didn't marry until 1969 so she was hoping for a good few years!
TatianaBis · 16/05/2021 13:15

I don’t know why she didn’t have more self respect just to get out of that situation.

diddl · 16/05/2021 13:25

@TatianaBis

I don’t know why she didn’t have more self respect just to get out of that situation.
I agree, it seems odd to me as well.

Wasn't she enamoured of a lover of her brother, then married Peter Rodd & then waited for Gaston.

She seems to be intelligent, witty, attractive-you'd have thought that she'd have had suitors beating a path to her door!

TatianaBis · 16/05/2021 13:35

It’s very sad really.

Perhaps she felt at home as a satellite around a man with a strong character as she had with her father.

Maybe she thought half a loaf was better than no loaf. Who knows what goes on in other people’s relationships.
TatianaBis · 16/05/2021 14:30

Not even half as he was a philanderer.

QueenBodicea · 16/05/2021 19:24

Having watched all three episodes, I enjoyed it and it's inspired me to read the book. Also thought that Lily James was great at acting a character who only 'did superlatives'.

TatianaBis · 16/05/2021 20:17

Nancy’s books are rather disappointing. She’s good at one liners but the best bits are the stuff that’s based on her real life - family - the rest falls a bit flat.

QueenBodicea · 16/05/2021 21:58

Yes, TatianaBis, I can see that would be the case. Being based on her family is what makes it interesting.

TatianaBis · 16/05/2021 23:22

Yes and worth reading for that plus Nancy’s biog by Selina Hastings. Also Hons and Rebels. Much preferred Decca to Nancy.
