Undercover Police: Hunting Paedophiles

Channel 4 now. Anyone watching? I'm finding it really hard to watch and listen to. How the undercover police do that job talking to perverts all day using that language I don't know, what an amazing job they do though.

It's really hard to watch but I want to see the conclusion of the man they've arrested.

Before the internet, these disgusting people would have made videos and they would have been sold on the black market. Then in the last 20 or so years the internet have then the opportunity to look at these videos relatively easily.
The chance of being caught are relatively small and so is the chance of going to prison.
For every individual the police target, there will dozens more come from the woodwork.
Not all these individuals are unemployed weirdos. Some of them are professionals with families, even in positions of trust.
If teachers and even police officers can be guilty of this, how do we ever combat it?

duckalemon · 10/02/2021 20:08

What can we do?

OldAndWornOut · 10/02/2021 20:53

I'm very tempted to check out that site..

OldAndWornOut · 10/02/2021 20:55

To report and report anything I see. Of course!

BadgeronaMoped · 10/02/2021 21:53

Extremely disturbing programme, I understand why raising awareness of the pervasiveness of paedophilia is important, I just wish the programme hadn't been quite so graphic. I can only hope that all survivors of abuse are able to access help for dealing with the (presumably lifelong) effects.

I could have gone my whole life without knowing about that little baby (as the interviewer triggers the poor officer who'd had to watch the video of her abuse) I also wished that they'd offered additional resolution about that story at the end, a nugget of hope like this news report about a successful Interpol investigation along with long prison terms for the foul abusers (Thailand in this case). www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.cnn.com/cnn/2019/05/24/asia/child-sex-offenders-intl/index.html

Agree that they really didn't need to show the blurred screen images whilst talking to the officer going through Kieron's downloaded files Sad seriously, the descriptions were bad enough.

Booph · 10/02/2021 22:05

The most important thing we can do is educate children (and friends/family) on how fucking awful some people are, online and in real life. I have family who work in this area unfortunately so I know my children will grow up thinking we're being really harsh and probably feel we're "curbing their freedoms" but I'm happy with being the bad guy there!

I can't see a solution. As others have debated upthread, there isn't a typical offender. They manipulate and convince people and the most dangerous ones use the dark web to hide it all. Prison sentences do nothing because there aren't enough places to contain them all and it is impossible to monitor them. Sexual prevention orders can help to limit them accessing technology, but many of these get overturned for being "unreasonable" and, in an increasingly technological world, it is hard to actually monitor them.

SilenceIsNoLongerSuspicious · 10/02/2021 22:20

If even one person who has seen this locks down their child’s tablet or phone to make it harder for them to be contacted by online strangers, then that’s a good thing.

I’ve been on so many threads where people justify giving full internet access to children or young teens because they’ve got to learn, and it’s important they have their privacy without a parent looking over their shoulder. THIS is why that’s a very bad idea. And it is at least something any parent can actually do. If we can’t stop the demand, we can at least make it a bit less likely that our kids will be part of the supply.

Gingerspice55 · 10/02/2021 22:24

Disturbing viewing but we can't bury our heads in the sand and pretend it doesn't happen because it does! I'm glad I watched it and educated myself even a little to protect my grandkids.

LemonSherbetFancies · 10/02/2021 22:31

I found this really disturbing. Keeps going around in my head, what was said in those texts between 'Simon' and the paedophile.
Is it part of a series as I think someone said it was back on next week? Not that I intend to watch it again as psychologically, it did a bit of a number on me.

ufucoffee · 10/02/2021 22:45

I had a look at that chat site. It still has a kids chat room ffs. It says that room is for young teens and it has moderators and admins and has a whole list of rules and say they will pass any info onto police if they need to. Well it wasn't being moderated when all those people who were clearly stating their interests in sexually abusing children were chatting in it. That site needs shut down.

OldAndWornOut · 10/02/2021 23:10

I had a look too.
You just make up a username and you're in.
No email or other registration process.

Exactly, we need to do something kind of like our moderators on here, get these bastards behind bars.
MrsTidyHouse · 11/02/2021 11:01

Haven't watched the programme. Don't feel able.

You may be interested to read of the case of David Wilson who has been given 25 years. And how he was caught. It's on the bbc news website. An interesting and harrowing read.

It's in "earlier news", so you need to scroll down a bit.

TheQueef · 11/02/2021 11:41

Just read that Tidy horrendous. Another mail story today about one caught by vigilante group while his wife disintegrated.
I'm not in favour of Facebook vigilante types but you can't deny that their hit rate shows we aren't dealing with the problem.
If there was an all female vigilante group that didn't confront or publicise I think I would join.
I just feel impotent.

TheMostHappy · 11/02/2021 19:13

@Handsoffstrikesagain and @PlinkPlink in my experience the majority of crimes towards children come from people known to the victim, usually a parent, step parent or friend of the family. The dark web in my experience has played a part in the increase of availability of the material to an extent, however it is readily available on Twitter and other social media sites. I think the internet and social media in general has made things a whole lot easier for paedophiles to share material, and has provided a sanctuary of acceptance, "normalisation" or legitimisation for their behaviour in some circumstances.

umpteennamechanges · 11/02/2021 19:33

@Skirmish1

Unfortunately the scale of it is difficult to contend with. This paragraph from the NCA's assessment last year tells you just a bit about it: Based on our developing understanding, including our assessment of the number of registered sex offenders who are being managed for CSA offending (35,000) and the number of offenders on the dark web (250,000), we have high confidence that there are a minimum of 300,000 individuals in the UK who pose a sexual threat to children, either through contact abuse or online. This level of confidence is supported by data from various sources, including from Stop It Now!, who state that in 2019, 94,342 people from the UK contacted their confidential helpline and self-help website to address their sexual attraction to children, increasing from 43,000 people in the previous year.

Those figures are just from the UK and will have undoubtedly risen by the publication of the next assessment later this year due to covid.

Let's be honest...for every person that calls Stop It Now there will be 10 or more that don't.

300,000 is a major underestimate.

A better estimate is 1% of men. So 3 million.

Skirmish1 · 11/02/2021 19:41

Those figures are from the UK so the estimate does work out as about 1% of men I think.

andshopsandtrees · 14/02/2021 08:57

@Tippexy

I can't think what on earth would possess anyone to watch this in the first place. Hmm
To understand the dangers of the internet better, so to able to safeguard our own children
andshopsandtrees · 14/02/2021 08:58

@AgeLikeWine

The utter stupidity of a paedophile using his actual e-mail address in his real name to attempt to access abuse images simply defies belief. How is it possible for anyone to be that thick?
They get caught up in the moment
andshopsandtrees · 14/02/2021 08:59

@Nancylovesthecock

I had to turn it off.

It was incredibly unnecessarily explicit and disgusting.

It's not unnecessary, we shouldn't shy away from a very real problem
andshopsandtrees · 14/02/2021 09:00

@yaboo

I also want them hanged. Even the ones who are 'just' downloading images. Just get rid of the lot of them. I don't care that they're socially awkward, or were abused as children: there's no excuses for that shit. Full stop. Most people do not find watching babies being raped edgy, relaxing or a turn on. There's no cure for what they have, you can't fix them with therapy or jail time, and there's only one solution that is 100% effective. Put them to sleep.
So you're advocating murder? Two wrongs don't make a right
andshopsandtrees · 14/02/2021 09:07

@Handsoffstrikesagain

Oh and for anyone on here that has children, particularly those of an age that are using social media etc, please look up and read ‘minor attracted persons’ (MAP). They are gradually increasing their presence under this guise online, particularly in ‘safe spaces’ like Twitter where I don’t see very much being done about them.
This had angered me for a while. No one seems to be doing anything about it!
andshopsandtrees · 14/02/2021 09:12

@FloconDeNeige

I saw a program once about the people tasked with ‘cleaning’ the internet; viewing and removing horrifying imagery, including of course, child sexual abuse. It’s mostly outsourced to the Philippines as Westerners aren’t prepared to do the job (understandably). There is quite a lot of research into AI and other tech to do this in place of human reviewers, as it’s just too traumatic and some develop PTSD.
Yes I've seen this
31RooCambon · 14/02/2021 09:13

I've just watched the blake lively.

It seems to use the word freemason and paedophile ring interchangeably. Wow.
