Anyone watch this tonight?

Just catching up now, it's the same show as "Your Home Made Perfect" but you guessed it.. a garden makeover this time!

It will be on iplayer to catch up on!

Yes, garden Rescue! They are all on You Tube. They always use the bonded gravel and what I'm not keen on is the way they always run the gravel ino the soil, it looks unfinished and messy. It would probably look nicer with gravel edging boards.

TheSpottedZebra · 04/03/2021 20:47

That Mexipool Yarden is great!

Thewinterofdiscontent · 04/03/2021 20:48

I liked the long ramp dividing two areas. The industrial planters look terrible I think. Back to shanty town design.
The first one was completely dull which us a shame.
What happens if one designer NEVER gets picked? The shame.

I liked the small garden the way it was. The bar and decking is nice touch though. That wall paint is horrid. Looks like a “ lively” pub (toilet rea)

TheSpottedZebra · 04/03/2021 20:49

Oh I'm totally wrong, they are breaking down the spend.
Huzzah.

Thewinterofdiscontent · 04/03/2021 20:50

The final bar and table is inspired! Still hate the colour though.

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 04/03/2021 20:52

The yarden ideas are great! I was going to say it doesn't quite look like £2k worth considering Joel built all the wooden elements, there's only a tiny bit of decking and they painted the walls themselves. I didn't catch whether the blue drop-down table was constructed by Joel or purchased.

Letsplough · 04/03/2021 20:54

Don't like it.....again Sad

jay55 · 04/03/2021 20:55

The patio by the house still feels totally disconnected.

TheSpottedZebra · 04/03/2021 20:56

I like it. Apart from the eye-pokey plant (cordyline?) right at Tracey's level.
Hope she keeps her glasses on.

Letsplough · 04/03/2021 20:57

I don't see how that's low maintenance.

megletsecond · 04/03/2021 20:57

No lawn for the dog.

TheSpottedZebra · 04/03/2021 20:58

I forgot their dog!
Will it dig in their gravel piles?

Hey, only a 20% overspend. Nothing.

I think it was bought as they talked about it being a bespoke design and we didn't see that being made at all.
Daydreamsinglorioustechnicolor · 04/03/2021 21:00

They were under the £2k. £1640 or so.

unfortunateevents · 04/03/2021 21:00

Why are they seemingly incapable of sticking to a budget?!

Quarks69 · 04/03/2021 21:02

The second design is great. Lots of colour, plants and a path to follow through. The concrete pipes mean it’s low maintenance as plants can’t escape! Fab

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 04/03/2021 21:03

Oh the big reveal! It looks a bit dreary but perhaps it's the time of year. I worry about the bitty-ness of the planting (seems to be the designer's trademark), I hope it's as low maintenance as he says. Lots of evergreen planting is a good shout. I still think it'll start to look a bit tatty as it weathers.

I like the pond and the circular swing seat. I'd probably want some tall architectural planters (30-45cm diam.) with annuals for colour. Actually I'd have liked to see more of the pipe circles at a comparable height to the wheelchair so you can comfortably perch and chat. The large metal one could've had a wooden platform/seat around the rim.

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 04/03/2021 21:11

I'm not sure about the long horizontal ramp. It feels a bit divisive as the pp says. And rather ugly despite the novel herb element.

I wonder what the breakdown of £36k was. I didn't catch what the overspend went on (apologies, I keep catching half a sentence). I thought the monkey puzzle garden episode had a comparable spend and seemed much more attractive (mixed opinions on here).

I didn't realise the main couple had a dog!

I find the presenter really patronising 🙄

Quarks69 · 04/03/2021 21:12

@GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat annuals are time consuming and unenvironmental. The antithesis of Tom Massey design.

covetingthepreciousthings · 04/03/2021 21:13

They were well under last week.. but I'm not sure that was for the better..

I really liked the final garden, I think it was possibly the time of year they filmed it that meant the garden didn't look its best.

Only caught the last 10 mins of this one. Switched on right at the bright orange walls. Not a fan.

I actually liked the result tonight except it didn't look like they'd touched the bit between the house and ramp. The ground looked like that gravel set in resin? stuff to me. So no loose bits. Loads of driveways in my area are done in it. Don't know the technical term for it.

Loved the blue fencing and big metal planter.

Thewinterofdiscontent · 04/03/2021 21:33

At least the couples seemed happy with them. The big garden looked scruffy. I know it’s autumn and gardens do look tired but it was so industrial and grey it made it look really tired.
The first design was a big yawn but I bet it looked nicer in the cold months with the arch of twinkly lights and cleaner design.

I keep comparing it to Love your Garden. I’d say I prefer Alan’s gardens in pretty much every way. He does loads of disabled access ones. Must cost the BBC a fortune.

Howshouldibehave · 04/03/2021 21:39

I liked the first suggestion for the main garden-I can’t believe the chap wasn’t a gardener, hated weeding and it made him angry, then went for the design with loads of plants!

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 04/03/2021 21:47

That's a good point Quarks. The vast majority of my garden is planted with wildlife in mind. I've kept virtually every plant and tree including those that are decades old - some smaller plants have been relocated or re-homed to fellow gardeners. No hard landscaping bar one small patio (already here). I admit I'm a sucker for a cheery pot of annuals. I ought to reconsider the environmental implications. I try to buy types that are accessible to pollinators but you just don't know what chemicals they've been cultivated with. I mainly buy damaged packs destined for the bin.

I do like Tom Massey's designs and his commitment to wildlife planting but I'm not sure they always translate well to suburban gardens and non-Chelsea sized budgets.
However it's good to see representation on a mainstream show. My concern is that viewers see wildlife gardens expensively executed ignoring the garden's usage (e.g. terrible unfinished pathways in the garden 2 weeks ago) and think it's not achievable in a small space. It absolutely is and doesn't have to cost a lot.
