It’s back!!! Now with extra added Alan Carr!!!

Starts tonight. I didn’t find the first series until well after it finished and binge watched it, enjoyed following the thread on here as I did so but I was way behind the time to contribute anything.

Looking forward to enjoying this series hopefully with some viper chatter as we go along. Come on in, all opinions welcome!

I'm looking forward to next week - I think the hairdressers will be a fun challenge. Also it is an area (certainly in Dublin, where I live) that is very forward thinking in the use of design

I think it's shops next?

covetingthepreciousthings · 18/02/2021 15:02

I also find it odd that they keep saying these are the best of the best (did no one apply for this - I mean there must be hundreds of recent graduates of interior design courses who would have loved to have the chance to do this) - how did they select the participants???? Was it on their Instagram pages?

I'd LOVE to know this, but I think actually after the last series they just opened it up for people to apply, so I guess literally anyone could apply, and then they'd probably whittle it down to those who they thought would do well - and by that I don't necessarily mean design wise.. I mean have a character for the tv.

Halsall · 18/02/2021 17:29

Didn’t the shop-owners in the last series give some feedback? I thought I remembered the haberdashery owner saying something about the wool display....I could be wrong, though.

dillite · 18/02/2021 17:55

@halsall they definitely gave feedback. Wool shop kept the display and so did one of the restaurants.

dillite · 18/02/2021 18:08

@ppeatfruit

Yes I was wondering if it was the same programme as before, it is near enough. The clients definitely needed to be included.

Lemon Like you I HATE the stupid competitiveness that the BEEB and most of the other stations seem to think MAKES a programme. ( I can hear the meeting of the producers, "Let's give them a bit of jeopardy". ) Firstly it's been overdone, secondly it's bloody stupid, giving too little time and money to the contestants. Just makes for bad results.

I can't stand all the competitiveness. I would quite like to see what the contestants could achieve if they were given a decent budget and a realistic time frame to create something (paint/sew/ throw, etc.). Have you seen Blown Away on Netflix? It's awful. All about pitying the contestants against one another, them declaring themselves to be better than everyone else and fake drama. I love glass art and would actually enjoy tremendously just watching beautiful objects being created. Instead it's 25 minutes of fake bravado and bragging and 5 minutes of the actual glass blowing.
Halsall · 18/02/2021 18:12

I would also love to know where Great Interior Design Challenge is, thanks

There's a whole series of it (12 episodes from 2019) on the Discovery+ app - what used to be D-play. But just the one series, unfortunately. If you've got some way of recording it, or you're a very early riser, it looks as though that same series is being broadcast on HGTV from Monday next week at 3am Grin

LadyEloise · 18/02/2021 18:43

I certainly think putting them into teams is daft.

Heavymetaldetector · 18/02/2021 20:13

I much preferred Great Interior Design Challenge. They got to work alone, and they got feedback every week so they could improve. Also I loved Dan and Sophie presenting. It felt a bit more authentic and actually about interior design rather than this which seems much more about the drama

I really liked Charlotte's room again this week, but too much faff around the bed I agree. I'm glad they hated John's room, because otherwise I felt that I must be so out of touch with current trends. The geometric black and white chevron thing, whyyyy??

Cattenberg · 18/02/2021 23:10

Yes, that was good. I wasn’t so keen on the extra challenges though, e.g. “I know you haven’t got enough time to decorate your room, but you also need to fashion an original item with these six bricks, just because”. And IIRC, the judges were a bit condescending.

I don’t like the modern format for talent shows where one person gets eliminated every week. Not only is it harsh, but I like to see the contestants learn and improve.

ppeatfruit · 19/02/2021 08:33

Lemon I was wondering if AC is being used to give a 'layman's' judgement as opposed to having the clients involved, probably cheaper for the producers but very shoddy IMO , I like Alan too.

Catten Yes the judges were a bit 'noses in the air' , though it was a more thoughtful series than this one.

I suppose that having the contestants eliminated, means the ones left do improve and one of the teams will have to win the prize. they can't have prizes for everyone! Though it is odd that individuals are eliminated not the whole teams.

Daydreamsinglorioustechnicolor · 19/02/2021 09:02

@Annasgirl which course did you do? I'm interested in doing one just for doing up my own home.

Dailyhandtowelwash · 19/02/2021 09:22

Ah, a thread for this. I’ve enjoyed reading it, and the blogs, thank you.

My particular bugbear was the voile curtains in the office between tables ‘to allow multiple meetings’ that John was so proud of. I was so pleased that the professional called that out for the tosh it was, but it irritated me so much that he seemed to understand the needs of the user so little.

Annasgirl · 19/02/2021 13:08

@Daydreamsinglorioustechnicolor - I did one in the Dublin Institute of Design - it's a 10 week course, and most people on it were doing it to help design their own home. It really helps you do that.

If you are in London there are way more options. Actually, the first course I did was run in our local adult education college as an evening course and I really enjoyed that - you should be able to get one of those all over the place. It was great fun. The DID one was very intense - we learned how to draw a room to scale by hand - but also very educational.

I am sure now that there are loads more available on zoom.

Have any of you watched 'Dream Home Makeover" on Netflix with Shay McGee - I love watching it. And DD and I adore her husband Sid - he really makes the show, he is so droll! I am always amazed at how she managed to start an empire from doing up her own home.

LemonViolet · 19/02/2021 13:15

I find Dream Home Makeover weirdly fascinating but in a kind a hate-watch way as they say! I think she does the same thing over and over again and it’s not generally very imaginative. But then I guess that’s how you make £££££ doing this, and your clients want you because they know what they’ll get!

I do enjoy The Home Edit though, which is like a professionally produced version of a lot of what you get on YouTube of people organising ‘closets’ and ‘pantries’ and such (in the U.K. we just have wardrobes and kitchen cupboards lol) but you get to nose at some famous peoples stuff which is interesting.

Btw if anyone on here is interested in giving their opinion to help me
choose a paint colour I’ve just started a thread in home deco - I want to do some painting this weekend!

Just de-lurking to say that the clients definitely have feedback on series 1, and they also used to have a “sneak peek” thing halfway through- I remember in particular the poor woman who ended up with the bright salmon bedroom. She saw it halfway and was quite stressed about it.

Maybe they’ve jettisoned the clients this time because of COVID? (Blame COVID for everything).

God I hated that smug bland-fest Dream Home Makeover. I loved their two daughters though. I did however manage to watch all of both series despite not liking the designs 😂

jay55 · 19/02/2021 14:13

The home edit, clearing out those giant larders and fridges is mesmerising. The amount of stuff is shocking, but the volume of storage space is glorious.

I'm still having flashbacks of Jon's ceiling and cringing.

Daydreamsinglorioustechnicolor · 19/02/2021 17:04

Thanks @Annasgirl I'm not in London unfortunately but am in a pretty vibrant city so I will take a look at what my local college has available.

I also love Dream Home Makeover even though her designs are a bit plain for my liking. I prefer maximalist but I think its harder to get right, hence my desire for some training!

Maireas · 21/02/2021 22:19

Jon's room was just crazy - I'm sure they had fun ripping all that out! I liked Paul's and Barbara's rooms, they seemed to be cohesive. Micaela is sweet and really lacking confidence, so I hope she can build on her success.

ppeatfruit · 22/02/2021 09:33

I agree Maireas I'd've felt ill in that room Grin not to mention the way Jon treated the panelling, such a lack of respect for the age and style of the building.

covetingthepreciousthings · 23/02/2021 19:16

Checking in for tonight's Shops episode!

TheSpottedZebra · 23/02/2021 19:52

Here also.

Whose design will I hate tonight?

Mooserp · 23/02/2021 19:58

Joining the thread and ready to watch

jay55 · 23/02/2021 19:58

Excited for shops. Though it's been so long since I've been in one, I've forgotten what I like and hate.

TheSpottedZebra · 23/02/2021 20:04

Michelle is so very beautiful.

And Siobhan must be dying her hair so often! It's always looking box-fresh.

Ooh, we're seeing the client!
