It’s back!!! Now with extra added Alan Carr!!!

Starts tonight. I didn’t find the first series until well after it finished and binge watched it, enjoyed following the thread on here as I did so but I was way behind the time to contribute anything.

Looking forward to enjoying this series hopefully with some viper chatter as we go along. Come on in, all opinions welcome!

@andreaMarteau no, the same budget for everyone, which makes the entire thing even more ridiculous. As you say, Charlotte had an absolutely enormous room, whereas Barbara or The Smug Guy had small room. Charlotte's room would have required 3x as much paint/wallpaper as well as more furniture. They should ideally all should have had the same sized rooms.

Going back to maximalism discussion- in a hotel, these are the sort of interiors I would expect if someone were to describe a maximalist interior

Where it's still quite sumptuous, but also relatively easy to clean and keep on top of/ clean between guests

I thought Siobhan created quite a nice maximalist room, albeit that wasn't her brief.

www.firmdalehotels.com/hotels/london/charlotte-street-hotel/rooms-suites/

If you look at the Firmdale Hotels (Kit Kempson the judge founded the hotel chain), you can see where Micaelas headboard inspiration came from.

I'd love to stay in one, they look lovely hotels!

absolutetelynotfabulous · 17/02/2021 20:18

Jon's was awful. I like Micaela but she lacks confidence. Maybe that's why I like her.

The swagged room was daft. How do you keep it clean ffs.

absolutetelynotfabulous · 17/02/2021 20:19

@covetingthepreciousthings yes - the headboards. You can see where Micaela gets her inspiration.

LemonViolet · 17/02/2021 20:29

For me some of those rooms you posted dilite are proper maximalist and hit the sweet spot - the Wendy Morrison ones and the lobby with all the mirrors especially - but some aren’t enough, only half way there with a lot of empty white space. They’re all lovely rooms though!

There is a dearth of proper design/home tv shows led by actual designers showing how it’s done isn’t there. I used to love Home Front, there’s no equivalent to that now and everything is the bloody Great British Competition.

Micaela is an upholstered by trade, so she does that in all her rooms! She's done it on telly, certainly recently I think it was the weekend Titchmarsh show.

Are they ALL pros, or 'in the business', given that it's called ...Masters? Is that the difference between this and the previous show?

covetingthepreciousthings · 17/02/2021 20:42

No! I'm not sure why it's called masters, I think quite a few contestants over the years have worked in retail / visual merchandising. A few have never done any interior design apart from their own houses..

Siobhan(? With the pink hair) works for the NHS I think.

Micaela on her blog said she used to be a hotel buyer! But then obviously got into the upholstery trade.

LemonViolet · 17/02/2021 20:46

An actual ‘Masters’ show pitting established designers against each other would be way more interesting! This lot don’t even get feedback half the time to enable them to improve. But tbh I could do without the competitive element and just enjoy a show looking at different trends and styles or watching proper designers do designs to different briefs and budgets etc. Like Garden Rescue but for interiors I guess, with a magazine element to it.

I am so glad John and Peter went. I disliked Peter from the first episode, when he said, “if I go home, it will say more about the judges than me”.

John’s shorts gave me the creeps.

TheSpottedZebra · 17/02/2021 20:49

Oh! Well it had me fooled, didn't it? Grin

TheSpottedZebra · 17/02/2021 20:51

When I read Peter's blog last week it was so narky that it was clear he didn't stay long and was in a huff.

ppeatfruit · 18/02/2021 10:09

Yes I was wondering if it was the same programme as before, it is near enough. The clients definitely needed to be included.

Lemon Like you I HATE the stupid competitiveness that the BEEB and most of the other stations seem to think MAKES a programme. ( I can hear the meeting of the producers, "Let's give them a bit of jeopardy". ) Firstly it's been overdone, secondly it's bloody stupid, giving too little time and money to the contestants. Just makes for bad results.

LadyEloise · 18/02/2021 10:21

He had an arrogance that was not upheld by his design talents.
Not that arrogance can ever be justified.

ppeatfruit · 18/02/2021 10:44

I just remembered Alan Carr's comment about John's Maximalmayhem! "I need a migroleve" Ha ha ha.... I don't reckon he was very impressed, I'm trying to imagine actually trying to SLEEP in that room Shock .

covetingthepreciousthings · 18/02/2021 12:26

I'm really enjoying Alan Carr as a host, I like that he's quite honest with them if he doesn't like it.. though he was on Graham Norton the other week and I think he felt bad incase he came across too cruel to them.

Annasgirl · 18/02/2021 12:41

Hi All, just popping on. I love this show - and thanks to you guys I am also watching series 1, which I missed first time around, on Netflix (don't spoil it guys, I am at the semi final).

So, I have a huge interest in design and did an interiors course (short one as I realised that while I have an eye and can "see" a design when I enter a room, and can do a layout, I cannot draw (big drawback).

BUT, even on my short course, I learned the basics, like scale, colours, budgeting, lighting, where to put the cables Smile. I honestly cannot believe that none of the contestants on here (bar Barbara, who is an architect by training (I wonder why she needs to go on this programme - could she not just set up an interior design company?) seem to know the basics.

I was delighted that John left - he annoyed me from day 1. And in design, you really, really, need to know when to stop. That is a key. And also, you design to the brief that your client gives you (not to your own taste). But wow, what a room. I reckon even LLB would get a migraine.

Charlotte really annoys me so I will look at her blog to see if I can connect with her outside of the edited version.

The offices were really bad - have none of them ever worked in an office? I designed an office for our own business and I was shocked at the lack of CAD models and also the use of sheer curtain material Confused

Oops - work call, hope to finish this later.

LemonViolet · 18/02/2021 12:56

AC is certainly a bit more interesting than Fearne was. Not sure what either of them have to do with interior design tho!

OP posts:
Halsall · 18/02/2021 13:26

I quite like Micaela; I feel she lacks confidence and deserves encouragement, but as others have said, she just doesn’t seem to be able to find the way to connect the separate bits of design that constitute a whole room. This week’s was like little islands of ideas marooned in a great sea where nothing was happening to link it all up together. There’s no cohesiveness, and imho you need that sense to be able to walk into a room and instantly feel that it works as a whole. It doesn’t have to be conventional but it does have to feel ‘right’.

BonnesVacances · 18/02/2021 14:30

I reckon Charlotte won and that's why she's being edited so badly. Everyone else was seen painting or wallpapering, but she was shown to be calling on the tradesmen to do it and then stressing because it wasn't done on time.

Does anyone know where the Great Interior Design Challenge can be streamed? It's not coming up Netflix.

covetingthepreciousthings · 18/02/2021 14:38

Annasgirl · 18/02/2021 14:40

So, back to it.

I would also love to know where Great Interior Design Challenge is, thanks.

I love Alan, he is so funny, but agree he is not known as an Interior Design expert (but can Noel Fielding bake a cake?). So on balance, I don't mind having him as the MC.

@dillite, those photos are amazing. Personally, I prefer a minimalist look, but I love those interiors.

DD and I watch this together and last night (we watched on catch up) she kept shouting that Charlotte was lazy and why didn't she hang the wallpaper to help thy guys out. We also noticed that she was the only one who never seems to get "stuck in" (except to paint that mural) - the others all painted and wallpapered their rooms and painted furniture.

It was very unfair that the budget was the same for every room - but I can only imagine what else would have ended up in John's room if he had more to spend.

I would love to see the reaction of the clients - we only saw it once in the last series, for the restaurants. But then, anyone who would let that hotel get to that level of awfulness probably didn't care as long as the rooms were decorated.

I'm looking forward to next week - I think the hairdressers will be a fun challenge. Also it is an area (certainly in Dublin, where I live) that is very forward thinking in the use of design.

I also find it odd that they keep saying these are the best of the best (did no one apply for this - I mean there must be hundreds of recent graduates of interior design courses who would have loved to have the chance to do this) - how did they select the participants???? Was it on their Instagram pages?

Yes - it was so awful. I don't know what she was thinking. And when she entered the room and said "gosh, it's smaller than I imagined" Confused - did they not get measurements? You can plug these into free CAD software and it helps you see what will fit into the space.

They just look so unprofessional when they come in with a mood board and no drawings. They seem to have no idea of scale or proportions .
