Is it not the most moving tv series in a long time? I've sat here tonight wiping tears away and am not normally the overly emotional type...

We binged this a week or so ago. Russel T Davies never fails to shake me traumatise me to the core. The Second Coming, Years and Years and now this, are all perfectly balanced pieces of drama that have stayed with me ever since watching them. How he manages to have you laughing tears of joy to crying tears of pain within minutes, never ceases to amaze me. His writing truly is one of a kind.

I dont agree about Jill being 1D or her portrayal sexist. We see her working hard, building relationships, glimpses of her childhood by seeing the bond with her parents, building a life in buying the Pink Palace and through the subtle suggestions of the decoration changing. Then we see her finding her vocation in support those suffering from HIV and AIDS. She’s an equal with the boys and I totally agree with the perception a PP has of her being a narrator of sorts. She’s the one driving the story forward and the thing that links all the threads together.

I remember the adverts and even the terror as a small child. Society never really shook it off. Even in the 21st century there is still a lot of convincing to do about how HIV isn’t a death sentence anymore and U=U.

Oddly enough the bit that really punched me in the chest is the bit where Jill is trying to get in contact with Richie over and over again without success and Telephone and Rubber Band is played over the sequence, a song so synonymous with people connecting to each other and the celebration of connecting, mostly through the One2One adverts but Jill getting nowhere and Richie isolated despite her efforts. So subtle and genius.

I have cried my eyes out watching this today. Colin, and his mum, broke my bloody heart. It all broke my heart.

I was a young teenager and I remember the adverts, and I remember the negativity and the absolute nonsense that was being spread at the time. There wasn't a lot of information out there unless you really really went looking (wow...life pre-internet, I do remember it!).

I can't understand why people have been so dismissive of Jill, it's pretty harsh, what's so hard to understand that someone cared for people in such a way that it became her life? There are plenty of people who still do that today.

I wish it had run properly to the 8 episodes as planned.

It's not an attack on Jill herself.....she is a fictional character who has been written in a way that makes her a too good to be true saint rather than a complex flawed multifaceted person like the male characters.

I thought it excellent

I didn’t cry though, I usually do at moving things

I thought the lead was very good

MarshaBradyo · 14/02/2021 18:46

Watching it the disbelief at the beginning was interesting and the induced shame must have been so awful. It doesn’t feel that long ago but I do think we’ve moved on a lot.

The scene where Jill visited the lonely man was very moving.

Hello! Where are you all? thought this thread wuld be loaded with posts from last night!

I only cried with Paul in the hospital.

Was Shock at Richie saying he knew he was infected yet still chose to have sex and infect others.

Would that have really happened in RL?

TinaTurnercorner · 20/02/2021 10:13

How come some of you have seen all the series before? I watched it on CH4.

notawittyname1954 · 20/02/2021 11:07

I binge watched it when it first aired but also watched every Friday. Watching it again you take in more of the detail and I cried a lot. Just the part when Ritchie's mum told Jill amongst others. If this doesn't win awards there is no justice. It was wonderful.

FionnulaTheCooler · 20/02/2021 11:12

It was available to stream all the episodes straight after the first one was shown 4 weeks ago. I decided just to watch one a week as they aired on C4 though, so just finished it last night. Ritchie's story was sad, but I found it difficult to warm to him as a character, he seemed a bit affected and pretentious and I didn't like the way he acted with his friend back home, pushing the boundaries when the other guy was clearly uncomfortable. I loved Colin though, his story was heartbreaking.

Honeyroar · 20/02/2021 11:18

I agree that Ritchie had a fair few not nice sides to his character. I was much more upset that sweet Colin died. I think it was the circumstances and the way his friends were shut out that made Richie’s death sad. But Richie was amusing.

Sadly, yes it did.
