Is it not the most moving tv series in a long time? I've sat here tonight wiping tears away and am not normally the overly emotional type...

I'm appear to be the only person in the world who found it a bit cliched and predictable and gave up after the first episode Confused

It’s worth persisting - episode one was definitely scene setting

Just binged this over the last 2 days, I thought it was fab - very true and sad ☹️.
Loved the music too- the playlist is on Spotify! 🎶 🎵

It's so so good but absolutely heartbreaking. I studied queer theory as part of my undergrad and looked at how gay people constructed their own families and communities after being rejected by relatives. The idea of young people finally finding themselves and their place in the world then being taken by this cruel disease is unbearable. I loved that there was humour there as well though, and people being creative and clever. Jill searching for information got across how slow the response was over here

maxbabi · 30/01/2021 18:11

I lived through all of this in London (coming from oz). I cant tell you how its affected me today. I binged watched. I literally can't stop crying it really was that bad and worse!!! The fear of catching it and the lack of any facts created such fear. We lost so many good good ppl. Im still reeling tbh and have had s few drinks to get over it.
Might sound dramatic but it really was like that. It hurts.

Sirzy · 30/01/2021 18:13

Such an eye opener, I was a young child during the time so my memories on what was happening are vague I just remember a lot of fuss about being able to catch it from toilet seats and similar so it was fascinating to watch.

peanutbuthead · 30/01/2021 18:16

Brilliant series: finished it last night and I cried at the end. It's left me Feeling very sad today. I can't shake the feeling

zighead · 30/01/2021 18:34

I'm looking forward to watching this. Has anyone watched it with their teens? My DS is 14 and I'm debating on whether it'd be suitable to watch together.

Flaunch · 30/01/2021 18:36

There’s a lot of graphic sex in it. I wouldn’t watch it with a 14 year old; it would be a complete cringe fest.

I’ve told my 16 year old to watch it but she can watch it on her own 😂

Monstermissy36 · 30/01/2021 18:38

I bloody loved it! It broke me and I cried a lot! Watched it all last Saturday...

x2boys · 30/01/2021 18:43

I have a 14 year old son ,I wouldn't watch with him .

WillowSummerSloth · 30/01/2021 18:48

It was phenomenol. Best TV I've watched in ages. I think of the 80s as being relatively recent given I remember them and cannot believe how attitudes have changed so much since then (for the better) Really moving and I can't stop thinking about it.

There's a lot of sex in it. I watched it with one of my teenage DD's, but the other teens (DD, DS and DN) all watched it separate on their own.
zighead · 30/01/2021 22:38

Thanks all. I'll save it to watch on my own then Smile

LyndaSnellsSniff · 30/01/2021 22:53

I thought it was wonderful. It make me feel so many emotions; I judged them harshly for sleeping around so much but at the same time felt like gathering them all up and looking after them!

My heart broke for Colin. Such an innocent in his anorak. His mother was wonderful.

I was puzzled by Jill’s lack of love life? Was that deliberate?

And I wasn’t keen on Stephen Fry’s involvement. Although I like him very much, I feel that he’s so well known that he’s a bit of caricature in anything he’s in.

Olly Alexander was outstanding.

OhWhyNot · 30/01/2021 23:33

It was excellent very moving.

Thing s have changed so much but still some people will have to hide their sexuality from their families.

Maybe Jill was meant to be asexual I don’t know but have known women like her (and probably too overly involved in their gay friends lives to substitute theirs)

I don’t think it captured how fearful and paranoid all of society became while still blaming gay men but then it was the story of a group of gay men and their friends

FolkSongSweet · 31/01/2021 05:31

I’m enjoying it - 3 episodes in - but Jill is such a disappointing character. Token woman, no love life of her own, a foil for all the male characters. What a shame Davies couldn’t find time to make her more 3D (so far at least). The actor playing her is excellent.

ReluctantHomeschooler · 31/01/2021 05:45

@FolkSongSweet Jill was based on a real life person that the writer knew.

Jill was based on a real woman and the show reflects her life in those years and her experiences.
FolkSongSweet · 31/01/2021 05:51

So she didn’t have her own love life or any kind of back story? Admittedly have only seen the first 3 episodes but she’s thinly drawn compared to the male characters, which is kind of more disappointing if she’s actually based on a real person.

And the actor that played her mother is the real life Jill.

I’ve been thinking about Jill’s character some more. Ritchie lied about his lifestyle to get a mortgage with Jill. The intrusive questions about his sexuality make uncomfortable viewing for a modern day audience, but the fact remains he lied and left Jill saddled with the debt.

No matter how warmhearted and generous a character Jill undoubtedly was, surely there’d be some flicker of anger? It also would have been interesting if they’d explored Ritchie’s confession that he’d knowingly slept with men whilst HIV+ a bit more.

CaptainMyCaptain · 31/01/2021 10:39

If the actual Jill was there on set she would surely have had some input into the Jill character and her feelings. I also don't think the character lacked dimension, she did most of the research and was working for the Aids charity, even at the end as well as her acting career.
