Is it not the most moving tv series in a long time? I've sat here tonight wiping tears away and am not normally the overly emotional type...

OP posts:

How accurate was the depiction of Jill Nalder from It’s A Sin?
Like her character in the show, Nalder was “very much involved in fundraising” for research around the illness. She said: “The West End community really came together because one thing everybody could do was entertain, and so there were a lot of late-night performances and shows.”

She was also dedicated to visiting victims of the disease so they had company in their final days. She said: “I went on endless hospital visits. You’re taking a place, in a way, of a family member because you become that family and just [have to] be there in a loving way. It’s not an exceptional thing to do. But it was hidden. Because you feel like, ‘Ok, I’ve got to go but not tell anyone I’m going'”.

Both those paragraphs were meant to be bold.

I watched it all last night. I thought it was brilliant but like others wondered why Jill didn't have any love life/relationship of her own.

I actually gasped a few times which is so unlike me. SPOILER:

When Valerie met with Jill and announced he died yesterday - I did not see that coming.

I thought Ritchies Dad gained a bit more compassion towards the end, but Valerie got really unpleasant and nasty.

Anyway I thought it was BRILLIANT and it did bring back the horrors of that time. I do remember the advert on TV about aids. Terrifying!

Oh and lastly - when Ritchie was going on about how stupid the aids rumours were - did anyone else think this sounded like a COVID denier today?

It's a big pharma conspiracy... etc Confused

ufucoffee · 31/01/2021 13:45

@CormoranStrike you were right. I gave it another go and I'm really enjoying it. Thanks

CormoranStrike · 31/01/2021 14:18

Yes, I think Ritchie was deliberately likened to a Covid denier so we could all identify with the narrative he was projecting

Hit send too soon, as in, we all know or hear of Covid deniers.
CaptainMyCaptain · 31/01/2021 14:35

At the beginning the whole group were reacting as if safety messages were solely aimed at restricting their lives and had no foundation - again, like some today.

UnusuallyUsual · 31/01/2021 14:58

My daughter recommended this to me and I was surprised how much I laughed and cried.
I was a teenager in the 80's and think it was a true reflection... not like now where we have information at our fingertips. I also wondered why Jill appeared to devote her life to mother the lads.

It was filmed pre-Covid I believe.
RedWhineandgo · 31/01/2021 17:03

Yes I've just read that it was filmed pre COVID-19 so the similarities are coincidental.

I've just downloaded the soundtrack on Spotify Smile

CaptainMyCaptain · 31/01/2021 17:27

Amazingly coincidental parallels with Covid then.

I lost 12 friends between 1985-86 to AIDS. It did very much feel like a moral crusade against gay men, at the beginning. That is, until people started dying.

I have never spoken about this before, but I was living in a shared house in early 1985. It was a drug-free house. One of our housemates ‘L’ became quite unwell whilst living with us. He had lumps in his armpits but the doctor didn’t know what they were. To be honest, we were not very sympathetic and he took to his bed.

One night one of the housemates found a load of empty Codeine bottles in a cupboard in the bathroom. ‘L‘ had been self-medicating, in spite of the very strict anti-drug rules of the house. We called a house meeting where L owned up but said he was taking the Codeine because he was in so much pain due to the lumps in his armpits.

A decision was made to kick him out. In the middle of the night. He had nowhere to go. We found out a few months later that he had AIDS. We had no idea. He was only 19.

Within months, so many friends got sick. People that didn’t know each other. It was like HIV had come from nowhere and infected so many non-related groups of people.

fucknuckle · 31/01/2021 19:24

i watched the first episode and was a bit eh, all the characters are a bit one-dimensional.

by the end of the last episode i was proper sobbing. all those lives lost, all the partners left with nothing, no rights to even attend a funeral.

i was about 14 when the leaflet drop and tv ads happened. too young to appreciate the real devastation of the epidemic. the show really brought this home.

What a tragic story - of course , you weren’t to know
Skipsurvey · 01/02/2021 09:05

watched so many episodes last night, not finished, so just marking my place
very good

Yellowmellow2 · 01/02/2021 21:43

An absolutely brilliant series. So powerful, tragic and thought provoking. It will stay with me.

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 01/02/2021 21:44

I honestly can't remember ever crying at every episode of a TV show but I did at this. Especially for lovely Colin and his mum, my god it's heartbreaking. Lesley Hawes was exceptionally good in the last episode

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 01/02/2021 21:49

I'm really pleased that there wasn't a romance for Jill - who was presumably straight. She was a strong enough character on her own and didn't need emotionally propped up by a man.

Ltdannygreen · 01/02/2021 22:59

Absolutely brilliant....I couldn’t take my eyes away. Terrific acting and a great array of cast.

SecondLifeGamer · 02/02/2021 02:45

I downloaded this last night. I am 1/2 way through the first episode. How many episodes are there in the series?

Skipsurvey · 02/02/2021 05:47

I remember seeing the adverts and being very scared of Aids.

Such a devastating story

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 02/02/2021 06:03

I'm on episode 4 now. I haven't cried at anything so much for a long time!

satishoused · 02/02/2021 06:07

Why presume she is straight? She didn't seem to have any sexuality whatsoever, just existed in order to do the cleaning/shopping/emotional labour/researching/volunteering/visiting on behalf of all those men.

Because Jill who she is based on and who is in the show is straight.
satishoused · 02/02/2021 07:05

Based on biographical knowledge yes, but based on her actual portrayal in the show she was saintly and asexual.
