I'm struggling to find series' that don't have misogyny as a main plot point.
My OH and I have just finished watching the queens gambit and loved it, it was so refreshing to see a female lead that wasnt abused or murdered, it looked great and was generally a pleasure to watch.
So we're looking for a new series to watch together, but all these top shows on netflix seemed to revolve around the suffering of women and/or childrenHmm For example I had to turn off 'You' in the first minute because the creepy voiceover made me feel ill.
I can't face it, I want to be entertained, not made more miserable.

Pointless?

NiceGerbil · 04/12/2020 21:29

I'm at that point as well.

Could be because I'm getting older and more cantankerous than I used to be.

It's just so tiresome having to have women screaming, fearing, stalked, brutalised etc all over the telly.

I mean it happens all the time in real life I can read the news if I want that. Oh but the news isn't full of the sort of. Relishing in what's going on to the woman.

This has been going on for years. I remember a CSI episode with a woman's arms neck being gently stroked under a shower of water and the camera lingering lovingly on her gleaming skin.

Camera pulled back woman was on slab. And I thought. Fuck this.

stayathomer · 04/12/2020 21:31

Are you saying you want to watch something like a thriller though?

WaltzingBetty · 04/12/2020 21:38

I came in to suggest the a queens gambit.. it's brilliant, and so refreshing.

JanetSnakeholeMacklin · 04/12/2020 21:41

I'm the same. I can't watch anything where people, particularly women and kids, suffer or are subject to horrible things happening. It's depressing, not entertaining.

Shows I really like are Agents of Shield, Queen's Gambit, Glow, Suits, schitts creek, parks and rec, Billions. They're pretty "safe" while also being fantastic shows

CrimsonSqueak · 04/12/2020 22:16

@NiceGerbil I definitely have less patience for it as I get older. It just seems relentless, women in tv shows are generally having a terrible time. It's usually a disposable mistress who ends up being killed in this sort of thing, it stinks of 'well maybe if she wasn't such a whore, she wouldn't be dead'.

@stayathomer not necessarily, just not comedies because we dont find the same stuff funny. Of late we've watched The Sopranos, The X-files, Russian Doll, The Dark Crystal series.

@JanetSnakeholeMacklin I used to watch all kinds of murder documentaries and thriller series, but it's just too much now. It just seems every 'grown up' show is about women being in pain.
I do love schitt's creek and parks and rec, i find myself rewatching them a lot because of the lightness of them.

I think The Expanse would fit your requirements, and it is a very good series too. It's on Amazon Prime.

parietal · 04/12/2020 22:36

Mrs Maisel is fun and does not have any of those things (bit of old fashioned sexism but it is set in the 1950s).

WaltzingBetty · 05/12/2020 08:10

The strike series is good. It's a crime series so there is death, but not gratuitous, and a very strong female lead.
It does cover issues such as coercion in relationships but is well done. Holliday graingier is wonderful in it

dudsville · 05/12/2020 08:19

I felt exactly the same way op about relief that she wasn't abused in the Queen's Gambit. It was so refreshing to see a female origin story that didn't revolve about abuse.

I've always turned away from these kinds of shows. When my partner and I first got together he was into horror. I came home one day to the sound from the tv of a woman screaming and a child calling out to their mother. I got so angry. I turned off the tv, explained that anything he watched for fun has happened and is happening around the world to actual people and I wouldn't live it. My lovely man now reviews shows for content.

Herdwick · 05/12/2020 08:23

Mrs Maisel is wonderful but on Amazon Prime I think.

I liked Good Girls, strong female leads but is about them trying to create power/wealth for themselves after being treated badly by men, so might not quite fit your brief.

Dead to Me (I've not watched it all yet though!)

Sex Education

MariaAms · 05/12/2020 08:39

Yup, I feel you. Just finished The Undoing which was gripping but it felt the need to re-enact a woman being horrifically bludgeoned to death every 5 seconds in every episode. Just miserable and gratuitous. We are enjoying Industry on iPlayer at the moment, also quite like inspiring docs like My Octopus Teacher, Knock Down the House, Dawn Wall and Kim Swims (all Netflix) for some escapism.

Jobsharenightmare · 05/12/2020 08:43

I also recommend Suits, Mrs Maisal, Sneaky Pete is less creepy than You and the threats are dolled out to both sexes, Good Girls, Modern Family - so a range of genres there.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 05/12/2020 08:44

The Good Witch on Netflix, it has loads of strong female characters and the female lead is one of the producers.

GooseberryTart · 07/12/2020 23:13

Emily in Paris, Offspring, Sweet Magnolia’s.

This is us on Prime

mydailymailhell · 07/12/2020 23:23

The Americans is an excellent show, give the first couple of episodes a chance. Gomorrah is brilliant as well. I hate Suzie also good. The Bureau which is on Prime is one of the best things I have seen in ages. These all have strong female leads.

balloonsintrees · 07/12/2020 23:48

Ghosts on BBC or Yonderland...definitely a theme here

QueenPaws · 07/12/2020 23:51

Not the most exciting but northern rescue is an easy watch

PirateCatQueen · 08/12/2020 00:23

Just finished For All Mankind on Apple TV

LooksLikeImStuckHere · 08/12/2020 00:30

This Is Us is great.

flapjackfairy · 08/12/2020 04:38

Virgin River is easy viewing.

longwayoff · 09/12/2020 19:59

Call my Agent on Netflix. No torture rape, or murder, drugs and guns. Its French, amusing, funny and endearing.

mollscroll · 09/12/2020 20:03

Grace and Frankie.

The Crown.

Female leads obvs.

Todayissunny · 09/12/2020 20:07

I'm the same op. I've pretty much given up on watching tv. I'm picky about books as well. I don't think murder, rape and violence against women is entertaining in any form.
