Looks good - reminds me of 5 bedrooms

Good cast

Alison Steadman and Peter Davison star as couple Gail and henry who live in a big house but divide it into flats when their children leave gone

She meets a school friend from years ago who is suprised gail hasn’t done more with her life then ‘be a mum’

And now she wants to do stuff at 70

Also staring Adrian lester (hustle)

Plus belle left her cheating hubby Neil and moved into a flat in the house

I wonder if Gail is thinking she will hang on for a few months until he dies, then she will have her freedom without feeling guilty, and alienating her kids. I just want her to be free, though!

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/11/2020 06:36

Yes I assumed that’s why she went back

Will be last longer then 6mths

She wanted to ensure she didn't leave with guilt and perserve the relationship with her children and grandson. I was sad for her packing away her bright clothing.

That was the best ending I've seen in years. No clichéd twists, no grim revelations, just tying up of loose ends, and some heart-warming moments. That final scene in the hall! Loved it.

Well, that was the best ending I've seen in years. No clichéd twists, no grim relevations, just a perfect tying up of all the loose ends. And that final minute! Loved it.

I thought it was just fantastic!!!

stumbledin · 03/11/2020 23:44

I want to believe that things will be better, but I think in the end Gail has just been trapped again.

Glad that marriage didn't go ahead.

Hope Belle starts leading her own life and doesn't let her family drown her.

Clawdy · 04/11/2020 08:12

But Gail wasn't trapped, she was still on her own. That final scene with her husband was only in her head - like a sweet fantasy - or did I get that wrong?

MajesticWhine · 04/11/2020 08:17

Clawdy I had not thought it was a fantasy. Interesting thought.

Clawdy · 04/11/2020 08:22

I'm wondering now though, because the Radio Times reviewer said it was disappointing for Gail to be back with him. I just thought it had a very dream-like feel, from the moment he appeared in the church, to the end, when she was standing completely alone in the hallway. Interesting to see what others think!

purpleme12 · 04/11/2020 08:42

I didn't take it as a dream sequence
I took it as there was hope although I still unsure about it
But I think that's how we're meant to be left feeling about that

woodhill · 04/11/2020 09:26

If Henry is dying anyway don't really understand why wife wouldn't want to be with him. Seemed quite a good ending,

LadyEloise · 04/11/2020 09:34

I was afraid in one scene when Liam and Gail were left in the church together and Liam gave Gail a dagger's look that he would actually attack her, blaming her for the fact that the marriage didn't happen.
Thankfully Andy's girlfriend, I think, popped back and invited him to the pub.

The ending was a bit meh.
Life doesn't usually tie up the loose ends.
Sadly.

purpleme12 · 04/11/2020 09:40

I prefer loose end tied up. Much better than real life

LadyEloise · 04/11/2020 09:53

Well that's true purpleme12

Clawdy · 04/11/2020 12:05

Can anyone remember what the last thing was that Gail's husband said to her before he seemed to disappear in the closing minute?

LuxuryWoman2020 · 04/11/2020 16:44

He said @Clawdy ‘let me get you that drink’
I agree it did seem like a fantasy sequence- the way he appeared in the church was classic TV ‘dead person’

stumbledin · 04/11/2020 17:21

No way was it a dream - let alone a fantasty.

It was the same controlling man who has made Gail's life a miserty turning up to make sure she doesn't have a chance to be herself.

He wants her back home in the kitchen and is playing along to get her to do that. He couldn't be king in his daughter's house.

And I hope Hannah doesn't marry that dozy Andy. It's good that him being around made her see what a control freak Liam was, but she shouldn't get too involved. Stick to shared parenting.

Best tv drama to be broadcast as a health warning against families and social convention!

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/11/2020 12:07

Finally seen end

Liked loose ends

And henry I think was trying to be more what she wanted

A fresh start

Do we think it's been left open for a second series?
