Just a reminder that this fab programme is back

That people who spend £100’s a week amazingly reduce their shopping bill 😂😂

Assuming new series. Hope it is

Greg and Chris help a mum And her two boys Ditch the micro meals

What fabulous meals will they cook

What will they swap

And will they have the usual - I don’t like that - and it’s their usual brand 😂😂😂😂

Aside from the child with autism they seem to have fallen into the trap of appeasing the fussy eaters and possibly making them worse by indulging them

We all have certain foods we don't like, that's allowed, but we also all especially when part of a family have to eat things we don't like as much as other foods - but it won't hurt us to eat them!

I have a dd who won't/can't eat certain foods, when she was younger I thought it was fussiness, but which foods didn't change and she's generally a good eater in terms of variety. When she had her disability dx and I started learning more about it, it turned out that the foods she didn't like are often an issue for sufferers as they can be an irritant to their mouths and stomachs, it was a relief to have an explanation.

But she was no angel and tried on the "I liked it last week but I don't this week" nonsense at times which didn't wash! When she did that especially after I'd already cooked it, it was "well it's that or nothing" and funnily enough it'd get eaten

But I did over the years gradually err towards buying, cooking and eating the foods she preferred as I was much less fussed and it WAS just easier and meant less waste. I think a lot of us do this.

When she moved out last year, it took me longer than it should have to change my buying habits and start again buying foods I like that she would not have liked or couldn't eat, plus she has a couple allergies so it's been lovely being able to buy and eat those things again (couldn't even risk them being in the house as severe allergies so couldn't risk cross contamination)

Graphista · 21/10/2020 17:43

My own mum annoys me with the lack of shopping lists! And she's in her 70's and should know better! She's always moaning she's bought something perishable that she forgot she already had in and she then gets in a tizzy fighting out what to batch cook and freeze or moans she's had mince 4 days in a row or she’s forgotten a crucial ingredient for a planned meal- just do a list!

Even now (with ordering from home) I keep a running note on my phone of how I want to adjust my order the day before delivery, I don't like doing too many "change my order" as it can result in me missing out on things, (I order 3 weeks in advance, putting in the "basket" the things I order most if not every week)

So I'll have notes like:

Add
Frozen sausages
Gravy

(Items I don't order frequently as they last me several weeks)

And sometimes

Lose

Baked beans
Tinned Tomatoes

As I've built up a stock of things perhaps due to a special offer (I shop with Tesco and periodically beans will be on a 4 for offer and I don't eat them that often but take advantage of the offer)

So its a wee reminder that I don't need them and the offers finished.

One person shopping and the other one cooking is never going to work without a detailed list

I agree they should sit down once a week and meal plan and collaborate on a list.

I used to do this when dd was home and she'd tell me at this "meeting" if there was a particular thing she wanted, eg when she started working and she didn't want sandwiches for lunch every day plus in the winter she wanted something hot (kettle, micro and small fridge available at work) so I'd plan to make things she could easily reheat at work or things like tinned curry (would last her 2 days) or even pot noodle

plus some fruit, snack prepped veg and drinks she could take in which was cheaper than her paying vending machine prices (she can't drink hot drinks).

Graphista · 21/10/2020 17:45

I don't think that pasta was appetising and I'm veggie and love green veg! But that was too much and would have overwhelmed the pasta and any flavouring

was wondering what the issue was, when they said only eats green veg. Better than only corn or carrots

Foods of different colours contain different nutrients. Especially true of veg, plus there are some nutrients that are more available and easily absorbed in those veg than other sources, so it's limiting his nutrition a bit. Difficult.

Query as noticed this a fair bit on the show, do English takeaway places ONLY do a certain type of takeaway per establishment? Cos up here (Scotland) we have that but also frequently takeaway places that do a bit of everything - curry, pizza, kebab, chip shop, pasta... so families can order a variety of "cuisines" from the same place

Yes why swap a sausage for veggie ones

cheaper, lower fat, lower salt...

Cauli rice has been popular with dieting adults for quite some time, you can even buy it already made into "rice" all the main supermarkets do it. Lower cals and more nutrition than normal rice. I like it. That dish would be too spicy for me these days, I miss spicy food

but it upsets my stomach too much these days. I even have to be careful with things like onions! But I'll use it for more savoury than spicy dishes.

Graphista · 21/10/2020 17:46

They're moaning about the chips but eating them - example of what I said up post about sometimes having to eat things you're less keen on, the mums need to get this through to them.

I'm veggie now but when I wasn't I loved oxtail. My mum makes a fab oxtail stew and she'd make oxtail soup with the fattier parts.

I find takeaways generally disappointing, they take longer to order and arrive than cooking something quick like fresh pasta or an omelette (ooh I've loads of eggs need using and toms and peppers might have that for my tea tonight!) and are usually disappointing flavour wise too (though I've lived places where they are a better quality than here)

There are loads of apps now where you can link up with another persons phone and co-ordinate things like this. Really useful! Dd and I used to share a calendar

Hmm, all well and good saying buy British but is it money saving? Veggie so not an expert.

My mums always used butchers rather than buying from supermarket, she says it's a false economy as supermarket meat more fat and water?

Again, pre veggie I enjoyed offal. Stuffed hearts, steak and kidney pud, tongue sandwiches...

And actually as a veggie I don't really understand being ok eating one kind of meat but not another? I think it's more a "trend" thing and a lot of especially youngsters simply haven't tried offal

Graphista · 21/10/2020 17:48

It is VERY amusing when they go "no that's horrible that's not my usual x" and it is their usual!

I did the same to my ex DECADES ago who was a properly fussy, brand snobby pita when i first met him!

His face when I told him! (Not just one item several over a month, did things like taking bag out of cheap cereal box and putting in old branded cereal box etc he had NO idea! I even fooled his mum re tea bags! She was adamant she could smell the difference before even tasting, 4 times in a row I gave her cheaper teabags and she was all "I told you mine are nicer you going to keep getting them?"

when I told her she then switched to mine and saved herself nearly £2 a box!

Yea if the mum of one is caring for all the kids at the mum of 3's place legally speaking she's a nanny. IF she's being paid. If at hers and they're all over 8 or it's under 3 hours a day she doesn't have to register as a childminder.

I hope she's been careful if she is in receipt of benefits as "benefits in kind" like having food bought for her and her dc counts too unfortunately.

It's not our business though as long as all above board.

I think she needs a crash course in how her own behaviour effects her children's behaviour. yep!

Priya is being credited in the titles and I think might be doing the voiceover? Just not on camera

It said she does care work so I did wonder if she covers her shifts?

Yes maybe mum of 3 has her child when she works nights? That would be more fair.

@Stinkyguineapig I love inside the factory! Another disrespected show.

Unfortunately I suspect they both have low viewing figures (and with digital technology they know exactly how many watch now) impacted by streaming and changing viewing habits. I VERY rarely watch "normal" tv now and often forget to look out for my favourites. Someone on here told me about the hobi app which helped a bit - must add this and inside the factory to it!

Ooh there's Aussie and nz versions - anyone know where we can watch these?

Graphista · 21/10/2020 17:48

Apologies my analysis/comments probably take longer to read than the show is! Grin

Not sure if that's a compliment or an insult!

I am a genuine tv fan, I find out about the writers, directors, issues around filming etc

The coke thing really doesn't surprise me though I can spot rotten Pepsi a mile off! Far too sweet for me!

Remember when they were running the can you taste the difference promotion (if you're under 40 perhaps not)? I spotted the Pepsi every time (and got a lot of free coke drinks!)

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/10/2020 19:09

Sadly heading nearer to 50 now. Aahhhhhhhhh

Abs yes Pepsi is too sweet

Abs def a compliment

Aww thank you.

Yes I'm far too close to 50 these days! 48

Looking like your mother is one thing, the shock of looking in the mirror and seeing my GRAN is something else entirely!!

Evening all

MadauntofA · 22/10/2020 20:15

Did you see the camera on the end of the trolley?
I like this couple, but but definitely in need of the Grhis treatment!

Graphista · 22/10/2020 20:31

@happilybemused thanks but is that site legal?

Watching Uk one now but I'm about half hour behind you lot as got held up with chores

Graphista · 22/10/2020 20:33

When reading the premise I thought maybe the "kids" were being a bit infantilising...and they are, but it's clearly coming from a place of grief and love.

Graphista · 22/10/2020 20:35

Re "it can't be a surprise when Chris and Gregg show up at the supermarket" and the trolley camera I'm thinking production tell them they're going to film them shopping for a few weeks, and maybe they do or kid on they do, so they know they're being filmed but not necessarily expecting gregg and Chris?

Wafflehouse · 22/10/2020 21:13

What a lovely couple, I think I watched this whole episode with a smile on my face. They really went for it and didn’t complain about anything and enjoyed it, they didn’t even apply for the show themselves, they were nominated by their daughter. Some weeks people turn their noses up at everything and behave as though they’re really being forced to take part when they have put themselves forward for it. It makes for quite frustrating viewing sometimes.

Some nice ideas for dinners on this episode too. Except maybe that soggy looking fish, I wouldn’t have blamed them if they said they were sticking with the chippy on that one.

jay55 · 22/10/2020 21:29

Bother I forgot. Catching up now.

I'm always jealous of the giant supermarkets they have. The one thing I do miss from suburbia.

jay55 · 22/10/2020 22:02

Blimey if they are going to bake the fish, surely they should crumb rather than batter, or at least put flour on it before dunking in batter mix.

Agree they're a lovely couple, it's really nice to have such a positive partnership on the show. I loved their honesty.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 22/10/2020 22:08

Just catching up, and talking to ds2 at the same time
Did they question why they bought 3 jars of curry sauce when they were on offer? Surely buying 3 makes sense! (If not cooking from scratch that is)

Graphista · 22/10/2020 22:27

@Wafflehouse yes they really had a great attitude to it all, very happy to try everything.

@jay55 I agree breadcrumbs would be better than batter if oven baking.

I think the curry sauce was just generally it's cheaper and healthier and tastier if you make your own.

I fell into the habit of using jars too much when I was a full time working mum as it seemed easier but it's really very quick and easy to make your own sauces I was just liking the convenience.

But when I stopped being able to work and so cost was a factor, plus I had more time and I wanted to lose weight I switched back to making my own and was annoyed at myself forgetting how easy it was and taught dd how to make them too.

I don't eat curries as such but I like Chinese style, stir fries, casseroles, stews and pasta sauce and they're all really easy to make, plus if you make them yourself if like me you can't tolerate a lot of spice you can tweak it to suit. Although dd and I do like a LOT of garlic in our sauces too which was another way we tweaked them. Easy to batch prep too, I'd make enough pasta sauce in one go for 6 meals, use 1 fridge 1 freeze the rest.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 22/10/2020 22:30

I was the same @graphista. I make all our sauces from scratch now. So much nicer and healthier!
It makes sense if they were comparing to homemade. I thought they were just saying they didn't need 3 jars Grin

InTheShadowOfTheMushroomCloud · 22/10/2020 23:00

God it was like watching DH and I! We are on our own now with elderly relatives. I used to pride myself when the kids were home that I made everything from scratch ( how the fuck I found time and worked full time as a ward manager). But now we rely on stuff out of packets - pies, breaded fish fillets, frozen chips. Tonight we had from scratch chicken veg gravy and prepared frozen chips... lock down has seen us reach for cakes booze etc. And like then we gave 'lunch cakes' for DHs butty box.

DH is like a rake ... me not so. His face was one of horror when the couple sat down to just meat and veg... no potatoes!
