Just a reminder that this fab programme is back

That people who spend £100’s a week amazingly reduce their shopping bill 😂😂

Assuming new series. Hope it is

Greg and Chris help a mum And her two boys Ditch the micro meals

What fabulous meals will they cook

What will they swap

And will they have the usual - I don’t like that - and it’s their usual brand 😂😂😂😂

Those fish parcels they made looked really good. And fussy DS1 would probably eat them! Don't suppose anyone has a recipe? I did look on the website but didn't see it.

Didkdt · 06/11/2020 02:18

The fish parcels are from previous episodes but essentially a bit of olive oil or butter lemon slice and seasoning or chopped tomatoes and onion or a paste of your choosing wrap in grease proof paper and bake. I often do a fish tray bake fish tomatoes olive oil potatoes chopped small bay leaf olive oil occasionally some pieces of chorizo onion sliced lemon zest.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 06/11/2020 02:28

Thanks. I'll see what I've got and have a go!

Graphista · 06/11/2020 03:27

That was a VERY short essay for me Grin but thanks op

Just catching up on this weeks and yes they're from my part of the world! Yay!

Graphista · 06/11/2020 03:28

Haha! First brand - irn bru! To be fair nothing else tastes quite the same and the sugar tax has ruined it!

Graphista · 06/11/2020 04:23

That’s a cracking goat story! Similar stories up here usually involving fish or game birds though (usually poached! And I don’t mean how they were cooked)

though I think porridge should be able to fall off your spoon, not go through a pane of glass somewhere in between is good, don’t like it too sloppy. Here’s the test question though - what do you have on it?

Ok - see what you mean it’s quite solid!!

£211!!!!

LOVE their reason for wanting to save money, so they can have granny meet new baby! Bless them

It’s possible to make meals that have varying spice levels just serve the less spicy portions earlier then add spice as you go, I used to do that when weaning dd as no spice for her, a little for me and loads for ex (who I swear has no taste buds!)

If his mum’s in California I’m wondering if he’s more used to a Mexican type cuisine with the love of chillis?

TEN portions of fruit and veg?! I’d heard of 7 but I’m a veggie and even I’d struggle to eat TEN!

I can understand having soya in a chilli but I’d have used a soya mince rather than chunks.

Sigh...I miss spicy food 😔 I like it, but I can’t eat it any more. Not without industrial amounts of gaviscon!

Sugar free irn bru - sacrilege

Age test - who on thread was singing the r whites jingle “secret lemonade drinker”?

You’re in Scotland it’s not swede it’s neeps!

I’ll be interested to see what cheddar they got as I like their usual brand too - but I never buy it full price only when it’s on offer

I wonder if they made the chilli sauce with him at beginning of week? As they took his ready made chilli sauce off him?

1 takeaway a week is ok, wonder how long after this was then checking in?

£90 a week SAVING! Wow!

That would go a good way to the flight prices

Lovely family too seem to have a good equal setup - I know not the point but SUCH a difference to last weeks where I think the mum might sabotage the good changes made this family were more like the others in the series genuinely engaged with the ideas and willing to have a go at making the changes permanent.

JamminDoughnuts · 06/11/2020 07:00

it was sainsburys cheese

lazymum99 · 06/11/2020 09:52

I still can’t get my head around going to a supermarket without any list or even planning for meals. What sort of homes did these people grow up in. Mind you these days even if I’ve only got a couple of things to get I have to write it down or I forget. And yes I remember the R whites ad with the bloke coming down the stairs in his pyjamas!

lazymum99 · 06/11/2020 09:53

Looking at the Irn Bru reminded me of Tizer. Do they make it any more?

Clutterbugsmum · 06/11/2020 10:27

I used to like this, but I'm getting fed up that they are not using 'normal' families. I'm not including when they do families with disabled members of the families, where it's obvious the parents have got into the habit of buying ready made meals as it's easy.

You don't need to be genius or Greg and Chris to help them save money. It blindly obvious that these people have no money worries.

The only reason they save these idiot money is by getting them to not buy takeaway's or meal kits. Although I suspect they go back to buying there normal food and takeaway's.

They need to go back and do 'normal' people who are actually needing to save money and need help in learning how to cook.

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/11/2020 10:42

Have always said they need to do a 50/80 a week and reduce it by 10/20

Cheese was sains mature 4 coloured Scottish cheese

I liked this family

Graphista · 06/11/2020 14:41

Can still get tizer here in Scotland not sure about rest of Uk.

@Clutterbugsmum when did they ever do ordinary families? Far as I can recall they've always chosen fairly well off families for obvious reasons that it's easy to save them money plus the less obvious reason stated upthread that poorer families won't have homes big enough to film in.

Thanks re cheese guys. Unfortunately I've sworn off Sainsburys as they've behaved abominably to customers regarding deliveries and lockdown especially disabled ones.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 06/11/2020 14:49

I'd love to see an episode with a family on the breadline and see how much they can still save them. A family like mine. But no way in hell am I going on TV! Plus I can already cook and hardly buy anything branded so not sure what they'd do Grin

I thought neeps were turnips not swede? My Scottish DSM calls swede swede, but also refers to having neeps. Confused

I've got a friend who insists I wouldn't have tried IrnBru, or if I had it would only be very recently, because its a Scottish drink that she had as a child because her family are from up North. I went to Scotland a couple of years ago and she referred to me finally being able to try it. We drank it as children in the 80s. The local corner shop sold it Hmm

IHaveBrilloHair · 06/11/2020 16:02

I liked all the homemade dishes this week except for the porridge but I don't eat breakfast anyway.
I might give them a go, Im a good cook but like lots of people get stuck in a rut.

IHaveBrilloHair · 06/11/2020 16:04

@Graphista.
I had Sainsburys during lockdown and they were great Im disabled too and was shielding.

Akire · 06/11/2020 22:22

Just looked up and apparently average food cost per adult in uk is £25 a week! Ha if only. Maybe if you are family of 6 but has to be least £35 for single person who’s trying eat even vaguely healthy. Even then puts their “only £4 a portion” to shame.

Fizbosshoes · 07/11/2020 07:41

Agree with PP that a lot of cases it seems blindingly obvious that changing some , even if not all, your shopping from branded to own brand and cutting out takeaways will save money.
We've had 3 takeaways since March (usually we might have had a few more but not many) I buy some branded food (and cleaning products) as a non negotiable but I always look for them on offer.
I dont know if they ask the contestants to exaggerate their response but really, are they that surprised that making your own food instead of a takeaway is going to save you a decent amount of money...? Confused

cricketmum84 · 07/11/2020 08:01

I'm sure they exaggerate the initial "before" shopping trip. I can't imagine just wandering round the supermarket madly piling my trolley with crisps and sweets and one solitary banana as the family's fruit and veg intake.

That said it is my favourite thing to watch at the moment :) especially as I haven't seen the really patronising woman on this series who thinks we don't know how much sugar/fat is in certain things.

FrancesFlute · 07/11/2020 08:20

Agree @cricketmum84, I also prefer Greg and Chris doing the nutritional guesses section rather than the awkward and patronising dietician.
This family seemed really nice. Less drama than the previous episode, as they genuinely seemed to want to make changes. The mum looked very well put together and rested to say they had a 4mo. I couldn't stop looking at her shiny hair!

cricketmum84 · 07/11/2020 08:49

Yeah I really liked this weeks family. I really disliked the mum from last weeks though, she was horrible!! If I was her husband I would defo have gone on strike.

Lucylivesinamushroomhouse · 17/11/2020 21:52

Just caught up. Loved the family but was excited to see how they tackled the CHAOS that is cooking around small children and was disappointed by how calm it all was (the baby didn’t really feature)!

Chris and Greg make it all look so easy and quick when they’re cooking together but I’d LOVE to see them doing it one handed while carrying a crying baby.

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/11/2020 22:27

I’m still waiting for e6 lol

Wafflehouse · 19/11/2020 09:27

Where has this gone again? I’d rather have a longer gap between each series of it means it can all get shown in one go. It’s only a run of 6 weeks fgs.

The bbc are terrible for this, I watch Only Connect too and it’s been on at 8pm for ages, Nigella comes along with a new series and it gets shunted forward to 7.30. I used to enjoy switching my brain off for a bit to watch Nigella waffle on unnecessarily about whatever she’s making but I think my tolerance for flannel has died this year because now I just find her irritating and I can’t believe she gave a slot of her programme this week to how to butter toast properly.
