This is from the book, I think the new Siegfried looks nothing like this (and he should look like the fictional Siegfried not Donald Sinclair)

It's very rare for an actor to look exactly as you imagined a character in a book to look because any description will conjure up a different picture for each individual who reads it. I'd rather have a good actor who doesn't look exactly like my mental image than a poor actor who looks spot on.

IntermittentParps · 06/09/2020 16:02

'exactly as you imagined' is one thing, but Siegfried is tall and thin with a long face. Sam West is adorable but he is not by a long way those things.

noraclavicle · 06/09/2020 16:14

Well I loved it. Watched the original series as it came out and grew up in the area it was set in. I never actually read the books - cannot think why - so I don’t judge it on any deviations! I really do need to start reading them now, but being stuck in the Smoke I think I’ll get a bit emotional Grin Looking forward to the rest of the series.

stumbledin · 06/09/2020 17:13

Has anyone watched this on catch up? I tried but in both versions HD or normal it has audio description. Very strange and distracting.

IntermittentParps · 06/09/2020 17:29

Yes, I did and there was no audio description. Is there a button anywhere to switch it off?

stumbledin · 06/09/2020 18:08

Thanks - I did wonder if I had pressed something and checked, but I only have sub title option. And it didn't happen with any other on demand or live programme. Very strange.

I know they do sometimes broadcast shows from the evening much later with audio description, but usually its marked.

Might try and watch via the web site rather than virgin media.

I am of a certain age and read al the books when I was a child / teen, and watched the series with Robert Hardy et al.
I quite enjoyed the first of the new series, but the horse abscess and the calving were very unrealistic. After that calving James was just about as clean as when he started!
I’m looking forward to Tristan arriving. The actor played Leslie inThe Durrells.
And the actress who plays Helen in this new series used to be in Hollyoaks.

ConstancetheGardener · 07/09/2020 11:49

Lovely , heartwarming Sunday evening telly ,shame it's on on Tuesdays , we need a replacement for CTM and the Durrells.Looking forward to Tristan arriving , the other casting seems to fit even if the characters aren't exactly the same as in the books . I remember the original series and this looks like it might be a pretty good remake given time to bed in after all the scene setting in episode 1 , first episodes are always very bitty but the signs are there that it will soon be as beloved as the Durrells

IntermittentParps · 07/09/2020 14:01

stumbledin, yes, that might be it; I watched on the ITV website.

stumbledin · 07/09/2020 14:17

IntermittentParps - still not sure what the problem was but spotted they repeated Ep 1 early sunday evening so taped that.

I never saw the original so new to me, and like others sort of hope this would be a Durrells replacement. But found it a bit cliched - but that might be because so many other programmes have copied the first.

Loved the scenery. But suspicious of how every day is sunny!

Will try 2nd episode but not sure I will stick with it.

Pobblebonk · 07/09/2020 18:09

They are repeating this early on Sunday evenings, along with The Yorkshire Vet.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 08/09/2020 22:03

I'm still enjoying it!!

I love Tricky Woo 😆

TOFO1965 · 08/09/2020 22:14

I loved it! And I thought Samuel West very well cast.

ineedaholidaynow · 08/09/2020 23:12

Was the music missing at the end tonight?

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 08/09/2020 23:24

I forgot it was on! I'm posting to remind myself to watch it later in the week.

SallySeven · 08/09/2020 23:28

I liked Samuel West in it too.

Pobblebonk · 09/09/2020 00:00

Diana Rigg was excellent.

LightDrizzle · 09/09/2020 00:01

Sam West is excellent, I did enjoy Robert Hardy’s rendition but he was really quite hammy and I think Sam West is closer to the Siegfried of the books, not visually, but I’m not bothered by that.

I’m enjoying all the vintage vehicles too!
I love the original series but I am really enjoying this one too. The farmers are really well performed too.

LightDrizzle · 09/09/2020 00:02

So many “too”s. Time to turn the light out here I think.

MrsMayo · 09/09/2020 08:58

I'm really enjoying it.

AlternativePerspective · 09/09/2020 09:05

I’m in two minds.

But I’ve read the books and so I see the stories and think “no, that was covered later/that wasn’t the same,” e.g. Tristan was never involved with e.g. Mrs Pumphrey and tricky, and the relationship with Siegfried and Tristan was different, more humorous IMO. Also the story with the hanshaws’ cow didn’t happen until the second book and there wasn’t any pressure or criticism from Siegfried as to how James dealt with it....

Siegfried is to aggressive rather than eccentric. IMO.

Toddlerteaplease · 09/09/2020 12:29

The tricky wood stories are much funnier in the books. Especially when he's trying to hide it fro Seigfried.

Badbadbunny · 09/09/2020 14:01

"Tristan" isn't doing it for me at all.
