Just binge watched this series On Sky today.

Billie Piper is phenomenal.

OP posts:
The80sweregreat · 28/08/2020 20:42

Chernobyl was brilliant.
Strangely enough we had a short power cut whilst we watching it : that freaked me out a bit I must say!

The80sweregreat · 28/08/2020 20:57

If you loved Dectorists you should try to catch up with ' Mum' with Lesley Manville.
That was also just perfect.

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 28/08/2020 21:03

Really. Must give it a try.

She admired my coat once, on a train ...

The80sweregreat · 28/08/2020 21:07

I can imagine she is a nice person. She's had a long career and done lots of different things. I don't dislike her at all , but maybe this show is just too young for me I think. Not my ' demographic' !

Corsicana · 28/08/2020 21:09

Any more on-topic I Hate Suzie thoughts? I’m really keen for a proper chat & analysis of it and was v pleased to see this thread.

The80sweregreat · 28/08/2020 21:15

It's ok and I agree the village is a bit creepy.
I am slightly in love with her husband! He is gorgeous.

Corsicana · 28/08/2020 21:26

Apparently it was filmed in Potters Bar.

Her husband was a lead in the TV series Lovesick, which I’ve never seen.

The80sweregreat · 28/08/2020 21:30

Potters Bar is a place that I have never visited! Seen signs for it on the M 25.
It was funny when she was trying on her red catsuit from the show she had been in.
Is it worth sticking with?

Feminist10101 · 28/08/2020 21:56

Detectorists - If you haven't watched every bit of this - your life has no meaning. Utterly, utterly perfect.

Agreed. I may check into a hotel just to binge this again in peace.

And “Upright”.

BunnyLovesBananas · 28/08/2020 22:18

It's okay. I've watched 7 episodes in a day so can't say I'm not enjoying it Grin but I'm also doing other things

I happened to have the afternoon off and I've got it on while spending some time with my fur babies but I don't think I could tell you what's happened this last episode...

So it's ok but not gripping.

DH came in the room during the sex episode and walked out after 10 minutes of it

Lots of recommendations there - thanks! Haven't seen any of those except West World

BlackbirdFirst · 29/08/2020 08:23

I feel like suzie is a bit based on lily Allen as well.....

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 29/08/2020 18:14

Finished. It did get better. Still don't like any of the characters (apart from Frank). And still don't really get the point of it. But I recognised the relentless self destruction and consequent despair.

Cheery. Grin

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 29/08/2020 18:52

Analysis ...

Erm ... Oh! The Monika Lewinsky workshop was fantastic! Absolutely pinpoint accurate.

Okay. My main problem was I couldn't help comparing it, in every possible way, to I May Destroy You - and wondering if Prebble and Piper watched that and acknowledged that they could have pushed some things just a little bit further. I felt there was a tendency to step delicately away from the trouble. It relied too much on sex, which seemed too easy and not really the crux of the matter - outside the central problem. Lots of more interesting issues were approached but not fully developed.

There was nothing new. I think this is why I couldn't discern the point. It seems awful to say this (because female solidarity) but, if the creators had been men I might suspect they'd made the show simply because they could. It wasn't a stretch for them. If I put my fingers in my ears and sing la la la I won't hear the words self indulgent ricocheting around the room.

catfeets · 29/08/2020 19:26

I'm not exactly enjoying it. Feels like I'm watching it out of duty to see how it ends.
I didn't like the sex/masturbation episode (haven't got any further than that episode yet) but did recognise the emotions of meeting and falling for someone who seems to understand and want you more than your current partner. The person who turned my head was VERY much like the bloke BP's character fell for so I guess I'll continue watching it to see how it ends.

I didn't expect to like it much anyway as I didn't enjoy Fleabag etc.

The80sweregreat · 29/08/2020 19:50

It's nothing like Fleabag but maybe that's because I liked that and I'm not keen on this!
The sex episode is cringy but I do like the Naomi character. She is a bit more of a character you would see in Fleabag .
I've Not seen ' I may destroy you' but I've heard it's very good.

Corsicana · 29/08/2020 19:52

Thanks all for obliging with my analysis request Grin

I really liked a lot about it.

My big problem with it is the huge focus on sex and Suzie/Billie’s sexuality. It was deliberately titillating in places but not in a way that is new. I don’t see that as particularly feminist.

In fact all three of Suzie, Fleabag and I May Destroy you are primarily about an attractive young woman’s sex life. That the woman in all three is in her 30s rather than 20s doesn’t really make it more ground-breaking.

I do think Destroy is a league or two apart though as it says something more original about sex and isn’t deliberately titillating in the same way. I think it’s a work of genius and writing-wise and lead-actress wise blows Suzie out the water.

The80sweregreat · 29/08/2020 20:04

Fleabag was ' upper middle class' and this is ' lower middle class ' 😀
( mumsnetters love a debate on class..)
I'm amazed that the lovely husband would even marry a Suzie sort to be honest. Nothing in common at all and they just don't ' get ' each other.
She seems too needy for him. He is too reserved. He isn't at all materialist but maybe has become too used the nicer things in life. Are uni lecturers not well paid ? ( I've no idea ?)

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 29/08/2020 20:10

I think [IMDY is] a work of genius and writing-wise and lead-actress wise blows Suzie out the water.

I was trying so hard not to say this!GrinGrinGrin

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 29/08/2020 20:27

The other thing I was thinking is that the worlds of these two shows intersect - the characters would pass each other in the street or perhaps drink in the same bars - and the trajectory portrayed from early to "mid to late" thirties for women in the creative/performance industries looks pretty depressing.

I'm assuming there'll be another series of Suzie? New agent, work or the lack of, developments in her family life, possibly complications regarding her parents and sister - there's plenty to explore ...

BunnyLovesBananas · 29/08/2020 21:32

I finished the series and enjoyed it overall

Now going back to the list of recommendations above to find something new to watch!

Facelikearustytractor · 29/08/2020 23:08

I'm on episode 3. It's OK and I'm quite enjoying it. It does seem like it is meant to be a bit over acted and panicky at times, as I guess she feels that inside, so it doesn't bother me that much. The episode with Dexter Fletcher in that hotel room where they are wasted and talking utter crap to each other reminds me of my early twenties.

The two main guys in her life are very easy on the eye, so I will keep watching for that reason! I take it the sex episode coming up is a bit of a cringey one, so not looking forward to that. Why is there a trend for cringey sex on TV at the moment?

The80sweregreat · 30/08/2020 12:14

I was a bit taken aback by the fact she didn't know that dishwashers needed salt put in them. I know it was to hi light that she was always at work and he did the bulk of all the housework and childcare but to get to your mid 30s and not know that one? 😀 Too busy having affairs ( real or imagined ) with other married men.
Still , we are now past the sex episode and hoping it gets a bit better.
I love the house too.

SmellsLikeFeet · 30/08/2020 12:46

Bugger, we don't get that channel 😕

StartingGrid · 30/08/2020 13:11

I'm on episode 7.... I actually think her husband is a knob! She's rather infuriating, the pace of it is a bit much for a Sunday but that could just be me Confused that being said, I'm still watching... I'm glad it was only episode 1 that had a musical ending as even by the standards of this that was a bit OTT!
