Just binge watched this series On Sky today.

Billie Piper is phenomenal.

I was a bit taken aback by the fact she didn't know that dishwashers needed salt put in them. I know it was to hi light that she was always at work and he did the bulk of all the housework and childcare but to get to your mid 30s and not know that one?

I don't know this but I've never owned a dishwasher and didn't grow up with one.

The80sweregreat · 30/08/2020 13:35

I only knew this when I bought one to be fair ! It was in the manuel and the guy who installed it said we'd need to buy some and rinse aid too! (Dish washers are high maintenance!)

The80sweregreat · 30/08/2020 18:57

Her husband is a total prick isn't he?
What an idiot.

Yes, same here - I didn't know this till I started working in a cafe in my mid-30s. I'd never owned a dishwasher. I do now cos it came with my house, and I LOOOVE it.
PerditaProvokesEnmity · 30/08/2020 20:05

Why d'you say that, 80s?

I didn't see his reactions as grossly unreasonable in the circumstances.

But it would have been good to be given some idea of what drew them together in the first place - beyond admiration of each other's prettiness. (I found it hard to believe that she had paid for his PhD but subsequently never visited the university where he lectured.)

I've only seen up to Ep 2. But I'm loving it so far. But then again I am a fan of Billie Pipers! Grin

I don’t think he was a total prick! His wife cheated on him while he was doing most of the childcare, and kept pointing out that she earned more and had paid for things and put down his job.

My parents hate dishwashers and refuse to get one as they don't see the point and I've never used one either and I'm 27. I wouldn't know how to use one or where to start 😂

That being said: the day I get my own place. I'm getting one.

HopeClearwater · 30/08/2020 21:07

@PerditaProvokesEnmity said I May Destroy You - a masterpiece. Has changed television for ever. Very beautiful. Shakespearian level dialogue

This bears repeating. It’s moved television on.

Figgygal · 30/08/2020 21:53

Nope
Tried it again
Couldn’t even finish episode 2
I’m out

I don't even know how to use a dishwasher. Never had one.

The80sweregreat · 30/08/2020 22:08

I know his upset and annoyed and why his acting like he is but all this taking E's and showing her up isn't really on. If he doesn't want to be with her he should ask for a divorce! I do understand but I just think he could be a bit more grown up about things.
He could divorce and get custody of Frank and a lot of her money without behaving as he is. Maybe I'm just too old fashioned!

The80sweregreat · 30/08/2020 22:12

I do appreciate it's only fiction by the way 😀!

JunoJigglewick · 30/08/2020 23:51

I didn'tt expect to enjoy it but I did! I think the family wedding episode clinched it for me. I saw her relationship with Naomi her friend/agent as a really interesting claustrophobic friendship. And interesting how Suzie basically spent the whole time trying to be what other people want from her - the husband expecting her to just be a normal person bit also pay for everything. So being late for the birthday party was unconscionable but she was late because she was auditioning for a musical that she needed because she had left the zombie programme and fucked up Disney. And the affair was with Carter but she had to he the intriguing damsel in distress for him. Her family saw her as a cash cow. Etc.

Really enjoyed it.

MistressMounthaven · 31/08/2020 07:03

I found the constant close ups of her face in ep 1 disconcerting.

And her behaviour on the tv chat show so irritating.

And her treatment of DC not good.

Didn't get further than ep1 - might try again.

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 31/08/2020 07:29

But they're portraying a human being, 80s - not a perfect domestic automaton created by a MN Relationships focus group.

Just got my last post removed as I was a bit worried about spoiler fury.

I have watched the whole series. Really liked it. The story flowed, although it did go off at some weird chaotic tangents, but I quite liked that. Thought the acting was good.

Agree with 80's on Cob. Maybe it is because I've watched the whole series, but he comes across as quite arrogant, controlling and argumentative. He certainly doesn't seem to respect Suzie in a way that seems to have always been there in their relationship, not just because of the affair. He seems to relish in calling the shots after the affair and the fact that none of his colleague knew who is wife was said a lot about his perception of their relationship. Got a similar vibe from Naomi too - she needs Suzie to play ball to maintain her life too. She was very sassy, but loves an arguement for the sake of being intellectually superior, and I did chuckle at the scene when she and Cob are arguing in the bar and Suzie was rolling her eyes.

I felt the underlying theme was Suzie trying to please everyone around her constantly. They all seemed to depend on her for their own success. She wasn't happy with these dynamics and found that her affair made her feel accepted for who she was as she didn't have a sense of identity. She was childish and made bad decisions, but think that was part due to being told what to do and people pleasing all of the time.

The80sweregreat · 31/08/2020 09:44

Perdita, your focus group comment did make me smile!
I do agree she tries to be ' every woman' and even I cringed with the Disney conversation when she mentioned the cocaine. Her family dynamic was interesting and her dad was also controlling. I've only got past the wedding one now. Nice to see Phil Daniels in something though.

Swingbin · 31/08/2020 11:20

Wish I’d read this thread before watching it, I wouldn’t have wasted my time watching the masturbation episode. Really didn’t like that, the only way it could have got more grim was if Chris Evans or Lawrence Fox popped up in one of the fantasies. Overall the show was ok, it doesn’t merit another series IMO but the critics appear to be loving it.

The80sweregreat · 31/08/2020 13:25

Oh god , could you imagine her real ex's appearing in a ' cameo ' role!

JaneJeffer · 31/08/2020 14:11

I watched two episodes and don't think I'll bother with the rest. I don't care what happens to any of them except the little boy.

The80sweregreat · 31/08/2020 14:47

The little boy is very sweet.

Facelikearustytractor · 31/08/2020 14:59

Have to say I didn't get the masturbation episode. I just felt a bit uncomfortable. Think it was trying to demonstrate some sort of confusion in her head, but on the whole it was just a bit of an anomaly in the series.

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 31/08/2020 15:32

I guess that episode was the writer flexing her theatrical muscles ... (I haven't seen her other TV work apart from the odd episode of Secret Diary.) Thing is, that meta stuff works brilliantly on stage - but what we crave on TV is realism; so you have to really commit to any other form to make it convincing.

And, whereas IMDY was about sex and consent and every possible issue around this, IHS really isn't about sex - it's about her life falling apart. The disrupting event could have been anything. They simply hadn't given us any (logical) reason to care about her sexual fantasies.

I would have been far more interested and intrigued if they'd interrogated complications arising from her family wanting to sell stories to the press, for instance.
