@Tomatoesneedtoripen

has there been comments about Dave being away from his pregnant wife and their imminent child?
DH and I picked up on it right away - we both thought it was pretty off, to be honest. No way would DH have swanned off to a tent for 7 weeks when I was pregnant - but maybe Dave is a useless tool and she was glad to get a break from him? Ot to be fair, maybe she is only a bit pregnant, which may make it sort of OK(ish).
Tomatoesneedtoripen · 26/09/2020 11:10

yes, she must have weeks left! not less than 7 i would hope.
i liked the mark's
and the musician, with the temple
and the ambulance lady

Tomatoesneedtoripen · 26/09/2020 11:11

Dave definitely looks familiar,
could be a young Tim Henman

SchadenfreudePersonified · 26/09/2020 11:25

@iklboo

Dave really should have gone & spoken to her or given her a hug (or maybe he did and they cut it). Him sitting on his stool surrounded by other guys talking about her just made him look like a schoolboy having a tantrum about it. It was a clear accident, he was in her blind spot and she was distraught. It totally took the shine off her winning the challenge. And his cakes were crap anyway.
Absolutely!

Anyone can have an accident - he was as much at fault as Sura was. He could see her ahead of him and chose to pass very near her. She was unaware of him behind her.

Stinkyguineapig · 26/09/2020 11:43

I never understand why they have to take the cakes to the front. The signature bake they judge from their own bench when it is usually something reasonably straightforward that could easily be transported (like biscuits or cupcakes)... .and then when they are asked in the showstopper to make, for example, a chandelier made of biscuits or a life size model of a labrador using brandy snaps they ask them to bring it to the front!

I had a cake professionally made for me (only once because it was so £££, although deservedly so) and the lady brought it in parts and assembled and finished it in place at the party venue.

Mafsaaddict · 26/09/2020 11:43

I don’t even let my kids bake without putting their hair ups. It’s basic food hygiene. People are eating the stuff.

Tomatoesneedtoripen · 26/09/2020 12:22

I felt for Dave actually,
he wasnt to blame, there were so many of them jostling for space
and it is a stressful situation.

and i remembered who he reminds me of Jonathan Bailey, from W1A and other things.

acatcalledjohn · 26/09/2020 12:56

I am also expecting a small tsunami of excess testosterone to waft in her direction.

Grin

He doesn't hide it well, does he? I'm sure it was Candace who once miraculously went through to the next week when she was the worst baker.

Mooserp · 26/09/2020 13:02

The wife might only be just pregnant. And she might be in the hotel with him?

CaptainMyCaptain · 26/09/2020 13:04

Novel's pregnant partner was there in the bubble.

CaptainMyCaptain · 26/09/2020 13:05

Noel obviously.

I think you are right - it was Candace.

I remember the lipstick.

Susannahmoody · 26/09/2020 15:18

Those busts that they made were hilarious! Omg I never laughed as much

Susannahmoody · 26/09/2020 15:22

Matt lucas was really good

And the laverly Paul 🤠

IntermittentParps · 26/09/2020 18:25

I never understand why they have to take the cakes to the front Because that round is judged blind.

Stinkyguineapig · 26/09/2020 19:23

Because that round is judged blind.

Yeah I guess I see the point with technical challenge....but they could do the showstopper at their benches?

BedknobsNoBroomsticks · 27/09/2020 04:07

If I was Dave I would have stayed back until there was more space at the table.

Those posters talking about Lottie's hair what about those contestants who wear nail varnish and jewellery shouldn't they be removed while baking?

I hated extra slice. It was good until Tom Allen came on. He was so rude shouting at people to eat their bakes. Bake Off is a light-hearted programme, there is no need for him on the show.

ppeatfruit · 27/09/2020 08:25

Not Covid toe? I hope Schady ? Ref. Pottery Throwdown. DD2 was almost on this year's.

Ref.Tom Allen, he is never kind but he seemed worse at a distance! Screaming at that young woman (who looked like she didn't want to be there at all) was totally unnecessary ,on her birthday as well Shock

CircusAnimals · 27/09/2020 08:46

@Sleepinyourofficeinstead

FFS at posters already disliking the beautiful, articulate, funny young woman based on precisely nothing!

EnvyEnvyEnvyEnvyEnvyEnvy

Oh no wait, it's her long hair and her arrogance apparently, that'll be it Confused

Anyway, that was a good start to the series.

She’s already my favourite, based on nothing more than the way she deadpanned ‘Solid start!’ when she screwed up right at the beginning of the first bake and had to start from scratch.

Sura has a not dissimilar sense of humour. I wonder if they got on very well when in the bubble — I’m assuming they both stayed a fair while....

I worry slightly about Marc — there’s something very anxious and vulnerable about his face...?

Peter the Young Thing Star Baker has a slight look of Tintin?

mum2jakie · 27/09/2020 09:01

Yes, Peter does have a resemblance to TinTin! Lol 😆

Loved this first episode. No fan of Matt Lucas but he came across well.

Myimaginarycathadfleas · 27/09/2020 09:28

I don't care too much about the hair, nails, jewellery etc as it's an entertainment show. It would be very boring to see them all in overalls and hair nets.

I think Lottie seems funny and up for a joke at her own expense. However you can see she's going to be PH's flirting partner and that grates, I'm afraid. I felt the same about the lipstick one, Candace was it? It's a distraction.

I love Pru. I forgive her her murderous past.

Alongcameacat · 27/09/2020 10:32

Matt lucas was really good

Yes he was great. Noel and Matt seem to have a good dynamic, I think they will make a great duo!

KurriKawari · 27/09/2020 11:10

I realised why I was a bit eeek about Matt was cos I've only ever seen him do stuff with annoying David Walliams. Without him he's fine.

iklboo · 27/09/2020 11:14

It's a little early for me to pick favourites but I do really like Lottie & Sura at the minute. Both very dry. Beardy Mark seems good fun. The older chap seemed a bit off, but that could just be editing. We'll see.

We try to have / make something to eat that fits the theme each week. DS is doing food tech so he is on biccie duty for Tuesday.

KurriKawari · 27/09/2020 11:17

Beardy Mark, Sura, Lottie, the older music guy - actually I liked them all! I don't think there's ever been a contestant I haven't liked.
