I couldn't see a thread on this so apologies if there was one and I missed it.

Apparently this will be on before the end of the year, filming has just finished

GBBO

Yay!! Something good on the tele to look forward to for a change

when Sue lent on someone's muffins
Is that a euphemism? Grin
I don't remember that actually.

terrywynne · 23/09/2020 15:38

I honestly thought I was going to hate it with Matt Lucas because I hated the stuff he did with David Walliams but I was very pleasantly surprised. I can't pinpoint exactly why but I enjoyed this episode more than last series and, whilst I don't find some of the jokes that funny, it felt a bit less forced than with Sandi Toksvig (who I like in other things).

Not much of an opinion on the contestants at this stage - in these types of programmes I always have to wait until a few weeks in until I get a handle on all the names (sorry to all contestants who go out in the first weeks!)

terrywynne · 23/09/2020 15:40

As well as cakes getting leant on, wasn't there one episode where one of the presenters ate part of the mix/icing before it had been used is: it wasn't left overs? Or have I made that up!

Ellmau · 23/09/2020 16:00

I haven't got to grips with all the names yet, but it seemed so unfair that the woman who knocked someone else's cakes on the floor won the technical, and karma when her showstopper fell over.

Unfair and karma? What a horrible comment. You make it sound like she knocked the cakes over on purpose.

My response wasn't meant to be unkind, and I'm sure she didn't mean to do it - but it was careless, she should have been looking where she was going, and I would have been pretty gutted if it happened to me, and the person who did it won top place. And yes, suffering a mishap herself (which she didn't really suffer from anyway) did seem like a little bit of poetic justice.

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/09/2020 16:17

But she didn't look very happy about winning that round. I felt sorry for her.

lynsey91 · 23/09/2020 16:20

I thought Matt Lucas was great in it. Really natural and seemed like he was enjoying himself. I also liked, as another poster said, the fact that he tried all the bakes. Good for him. I think he was a really good choice. If, as a couple of posters had suggested, they had chosen Alison Hammond I would never be able to watch it. I had to turn it off when she did Masterchef and when she did celebrity Bake Off. Far too full of herself

Not sure about Sura. When Noel was talking to her about the battenburg she barely answered and seemed like she was bored. I also though she should have had more sense than flinging her arms around when she knew people would be walking around with their bakes.

Jojobythesea · 23/09/2020 16:23

Please can anyone help me?!? Who does Dave look like? Someone from a soap maybe? Or a tennis player? It's driving me mad.

GBBO 2020!!
acatcalledjohn · 23/09/2020 16:23

That's still harsh. She clearly got no joy from winning technical and was in tears. There are 12 contestants bringing something to a small table at the same time. I'm surprised it doesn't go wrong more frequently.

I don't think you quite 'get' the spirit of the show by calling her showstopper cake tumble "poetic justice".

Willowmartha1 · 23/09/2020 16:25

@lynsey91 yes I agree about sura she seemed quite offhand with Noel I don't think she gets his humor !

SimonJT · 23/09/2020 16:25

Plus like most of us she doesn’t have eyes in the back of her head, if you put something so close to someones arm you can’t be shocked that their arm doesn’t remain stationary.

lynsey91 · 23/09/2020 16:37

@SimonJT he didn't choose to put his cakes so close to her arm. He was putting them on the table.

Of course she doesn't have eyes in the back of her head. Neither do I which is why if I am in the kitchen I don't just turn with a knife in my hand or a hot pan. I check first that DH or one of my dogs is not there

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/09/2020 16:38

People commented that Rahul was off hand with Noel and didn't get his jokes but he follows him on Instagram and clearly idolises him. But I still don't think he gets the jokes.

ageingdisgracefully · 23/09/2020 16:42

@Jojobythesea - Dave is Tim Henman's doppelganger.

Oh hurrah!!! Thanks. That is it. Those slightly scary eyes!!! 😂😂😂

IntermittentParps · 23/09/2020 16:46

DEFINITELY Tim Henman from that picture. That's uncanny!

I haven't watched it yet, so am trying to dip in without spoilering myself.

Stinkyguineapig · 23/09/2020 16:55

DD thinks the Freddie Mercury cake looks just like the man on the Pringles tube.

I said that! We were all in hysterics at the impossible portrait cakes, even DH, who insists he diesnt like bake off and only laughs about twice a month

I LOVED Matt Lucas Boris sketch as well as the first one he did a few months ago.

However I feel that year on year Bake off gets further and further away from "normal" baking. Week 1 signature bake is usually biscuits and they make something resembling that a competent home baker would probably be able to do at home.
If you look at the first few series, the show stoppers look far more achievable and like you might make them at home (but almost underwhelming compared to biscuit chandeliers and 3d self portrait cakes!) I thought the showstopper was really tough for week 1.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 23/09/2020 16:56

Sura explained she was batting a fly away from the cakes - a knee jerk reaction that we’d probably all have, especially if we were in a bit of a fluster anyway.

A clip on Steph's Packed Lunch on Channel 4 today showed that that is exactly what happened.
Momniscient · 23/09/2020 17:44

I'm still not sure I agree with the decision made. We're rewatching tonight because I'm so annoyed and want to understand what I missed! I shan't spoil the decision just in case and won't give specifics just yet, but I think other people made bigger, less forgiveable mistakes throughout.

I think GBBO should give the first week as grace like other shows (is it sewing bee that doesn't kick anyone off the first week?) so that people can quickly fix their mistakes. First week nerves may well have affected people quite a lot. Makes me sad

terrywynne · 23/09/2020 18:32

I've always thought that about a week's grace - time to get used to the pressures of competition and also the different equipment etc.

DeliasDinner · 23/09/2020 18:46

Really enjoyed it, Matt Lucas was so much warmer than I expected. Thought he'd be sharp and sarcastic, but not at all. It feels a better fit than Sandi and Noel (although I love Sandi). Pleased to see a range of ages, as opposed to last year when they were all about 14. Makes for a much more balanced and enjoyable show.

Goingdooolally · 23/09/2020 23:05

It was brilliant! Matt Lucas was hilarious. Noel as lovely as ever 💗 The contestants were a really great mix and seemed like interesting people. Lottie’s dead pan comments had me cracking up. Surprised she wasn’t liked on here 🤷‍♀️

Myimaginarycathadfleas · 23/09/2020 23:08

@5foot5

DD thinks the Freddie Mercury cake looks just like the man on the Pringles tube.

And according to DH the David Bowie cake showed him as the alter ego Aladin Sane not Ziggy Stardust as the contestant said

Your DH was right. Ziggy Stardust indeed...
Italiangreyhound · 24/09/2020 00:36

I have avoided this for years as I very felt it would be interesting... amd tonight I cracked and watched it and was so glad I did. Brilliant.

merryhouse
"Well it's not Hamish cos he doesn't have colleagues (I was at school with him and we're FBF)"

I really want Hamish to win, he is brilliant. But i fear he may not. His battenburg looked amazing.

Italiangreyhound · 24/09/2020 00:39

as I very felt it would be interesting.

as I felt it would not be very interesting.

And now I cannot type!
