Any idea how long it takes for the affair to start ?

StillCoughingandLaughing · 12/11/2020 21:12

Although I do think that Bet is missed, as is Racquel...the pub isn’t quite right at the moment.

Yes, I think a lot of people at the time felt the Duckworths running the pub was more fun on paper than in reality. From what I’ve read, Tony Warren said the same.

Losing Bet and Racquel robbed the show of two of its strongest women - and, to a lesser extent, Reg was a noticeable loss, in terms of comedy at least.

One of my favourite characters is about to make her return - but sadly the writers completely waste her Sad

GreenClock · 12/11/2020 22:33

Ooooh looking forward to an old face returning....can’t think who it is though!

Speaking of which, I wish that Angie had been in a few more scenes when she turned up just before Christmas. I also liked Denise - very well written and acted - and it was good to see her again, albeit briefly. And yes - Reg was very good, an excellent comedy character.

Even though aspects of it seem strange from a 2020 perspective, I do prefer 1997 Corrie to the current mish-mash of absurd plots.

Kind of makes me sad actually that so many of the 'current' Classic characters are either long dead or havent been mentioned for years. Can't help but think that it would have been better for Des to marry Claire and move away somewhere.

AdoptedBumpkin · 13/11/2020 10:23

@StillCoughingandLaughing

It’s a shame they got rid of Joyce; I thought she was a good character. Anita Carey was in Doctors a few years later and she played a very different character.

Did anyone else spot Vanessa of Emmerdale fame as Sheila?

Agreed. Corrie IMO had a habit in this period of killing off good characters off in their prime or at least before their time.
x2boys · 13/11/2020 10:33

Yes they definitely made mistakes getting rid of some charcacters ,It's only now years later I can appreciate Derek and Mavis and even Don to some extent ( horrible character but very well acted ) I'm really not liking Liz at the moment ,I really love Jamie's character he s such a good little actor ,it's a shame they couldn't keep him in it somehow .

AdoptedBumpkin · 13/11/2020 10:48

@x2boys Definitely. I wish Derek & Mavis had been around a bit longer, and Jamie also. Looking back, this was a nice period of Corrie, with lots of much loved old and some good newer characters around.

Liverbird77 · 13/11/2020 13:05

Jamie's doing pretty well for himself these days... Corrie couldn't have kept him!

I think Don's acting is getting better and better. You can see the bitterness all over his face.

eggandonion · 13/11/2020 13:32

Don is horrible.
Life expectancy on coronation street is very low.

AdoptedBumpkin · 13/11/2020 19:41

I genuinely feel/felt sorry for Don. Watching the repeats is reminding me of my sympathy back then.

cherrytree63 · 14/11/2020 08:09

I can't find the article now, so I might have dreamt this, but Geoffrey Hinself was an amputee in real life. He had to learn to walk with a limp again for the story line.
I feel a bit sorry for him too, I don't know much about wills and property law, but wouldn't Don have owned half of Ivy's house or hadn't they been married long enough?
And why didn't she leave it jointly to Nick and Sarah?

StillCoughingandLaughing · 14/11/2020 10:06

I’d always wondered if the actor was an amputee - I could never find anything to confirm it. I thought he probably was; to quote my mother, ‘I think he’d forget to limp sometimes otherwise’ (like Paul Robinson in Neighbours).

Ivy leaving the house to Nick rather than Sarah was because she was obsessed with preserving the family name and, as she put it, ‘Sarah will get married and change her name anyway’. Also, there was a question over Sarah’s paternity when she was born, so maybe Ivy never believed she was really ‘Our Brian’s kiddy’.

Ivy made the will after she was married, so maybe that’s why Don didn’t have an automatic claim on the house, but I would’ve thought he could have made a pretty strong claim that it was the marital home and that Ivy had essentially deserted him.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 16/11/2020 14:36

Just catching up... I know it’s a few years ago now, but would Chris’s appearance really have caused such speculation and consternation? He was going for a job as a mechanic, not an investment banker.

x2boys · 16/11/2020 14:55

No I don't think so and it was the fashion of the time for young men to wear army casual type clothing and it's not like his appearance was so outlandish anyway .

Ontheboardwalk · 16/11/2020 19:03

I was wearing my green army jacket, stripy tights and doc martins at this time. I wouldn’t call it fashion though 😂

x2boys · 16/11/2020 19:25

Yeah I wore similar 😂style than?

eggandonion · 16/11/2020 19:25

I knew Liz should never have got involved with the villain. I thought that happened about five years ago though! I had forgotten about army surplus hunk mechanic.

x2boys · 16/11/2020 19:27

How did she run I those heals ?😲

x2boys · 16/11/2020 19:28

Heels *

eggandonion · 16/11/2020 19:43

I don't know, I couldn't. Even 20 years ago.

Ontheboardwalk · 16/11/2020 20:06

She’d have been ok if she had Docs on like me and x2boys

x2boys · 16/11/2020 20:09

Definitely I loved my Doc's 😂

GreenClock · 17/11/2020 11:21

I was young then and a couple of my male friends dressed like Chris. I’m not getting the consternation about his appearance either Smile

The Liz/Fraser story is now a bit tedious imo, excellent as the Fraser actor is. I don’t understand his obsession with Liz, it can’t all be about small-fry Steve surely. I’ve forgotten this story, so perhaps there was more to it.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 17/11/2020 20:08

The streets of Manchester looked remarkably empty for a Friday night, when Liz was fleeing from Gerry! Can't believe there was absolutely no-one else around.

I've always assumed The Hourglass was in Manchester town centre, rather than Weatherfield, but I could be wrong...🤔

x2boys · 17/11/2020 20:15

Yes I did too 🤔 Weathefield is supposed to be Salford and I lived in Salford around that time I don't recall any pubs like the Hourglass around that time ,Media city etc hadn't been developed than .
