Yes, I know I'm 12 years behind the times, but Breaking Bad?

I don't generally watch a lot of TV but times have changed.

I've watched 4 episodes of Breaking Bad and at times have literally had to hold on to my stomach and watch through my fingers. I sat through Ozark earlier in lockdown and didn't much enjoy the gore and violence in that but it seemed almost trivial in comparison to what I've seen in BB so far.

But so many people say it's the best TV series ever made. Should I continue?

No Spoilers Please!

Brilliant series. We watched it as a DVD boxed set and when one episode refused to play I threw the only hissy fit I have ever done about a TV programme and just had to buy a replacement rather than miss even one episode. (Couldn't take it back hmv weren't trading any more).
We are now waiting for the latest season of Better Call Saul to come out on DVD as we've enjoyed that so much too.

nomorefencepostsplease · 16/06/2020 14:38

The Fly episode was made when they were having problems with cashflow and unsure whether they could continue (obviously this got resolved!).

They needed to keep the costs down so basically did a very simple episode in a single location with minimal actors!

Danglingmod · 16/06/2020 14:51

I love The Fly episode! Proper water cooler moment at work the next day after that aired!

Pipandmum · 16/06/2020 14:52

It's brilliant. And afterwards watch Better Call Saul.

Drogonssmile · 16/06/2020 14:54

Yes it is excellent, as is Better Call Saul. It actually gets a little less gory and more dramatic I think throughout the series'
If I remember correctly the first few episodes are almost a bit slapstick compared to how it pans out!

ComDummings · 16/06/2020 14:57

“Fuck you and your eyebrows!”
Omg I wish I could watch it again for the first time, I struggled to get into it at first but I absolutely loved it, the whole thing was just brilliant. Keep going!

Cruddles · 16/06/2020 19:01

I found the gormless sidekick too irritating

Yes i think that was the biggest factor in putting me off it

Giganticshark · 16/06/2020 19:14

Just stop. You're into season 2 and not enjoying it. Don't waste your life.
I absolutely love BB, it's the best series I've ever seen. I have watched it about 8 times all the way through.
I tried Better Call Saul, I kept at it, pushed through for 3 seasons. What a pile of shite. So slow.
Don't force yourself to watch something you're blatantly not into just because others say it's good.
What do you expect to happen by now?

Cooroo · 16/06/2020 19:23

I'm amazed how many people say it takes a while to get going! I was hooked in episode 1 and never looked back!

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 16/06/2020 22:45

It took me three goes to get into it. I was going through a bad patch and I found it too depressing to watch. I think it was end of season 2 I gave up the first two times. So glad I gave it a third go as it just gets better and better.

CakeCakeCake21 · 17/06/2020 09:03

I found the gormless sidekick too irritating Do you mean Jesse? After the second series I found the development of his character and the direction it went when compared to Walt, and the (trying not to do spoilers!) exploration of what makes someone moral and what choices they make, to be my top reason for watching. Also, he’s very good looking!

TheVanguardSix · 17/06/2020 09:16

Keep on going! And then watch Better Call Saul.
Both of those shows combined have been the best viewing over.
Breaking Bad is in a class by itself.

You'll end up hating characters you like now, and you'll end up rooting for characters you used to despise. THIS! The writing is just too good.

superoz · 17/06/2020 10:26

I nearly gave up in Season 2 due to hating all the characters and the decisions they made. However dh kept on watching and got back into it again.
We only watched it last year, so late to the party and for me didn’t quite live up to all the hype, but by then had been put on a pedestal, still thought it was a great show in the end.

And my favourite character was Gus!

Saucery · 17/06/2020 11:08

@SchadenfreudePersonified

What are the Colour Wheel theories Saucery?
breakingbad.fandom.com/wiki/Colors

Introduction to them here, SP. A lot of thought went into the cinematography and wardrobe, which if you rewatch makes sense (although DH, who is of an artistic persuasion, said “there’s something meaningful in the lighting etc” without actually knowing what).
But if you read it early on then it does have the dreaded Spoilers.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 17/06/2020 14:12

Thank you Saucery - I've watched the entire series three times, so I will read this and then watch it again with even more delight!

(Nice to be able to justify a fourth go-round to DH Grin)

Saucery · 17/06/2020 17:15

Oooh, you’re in for a treat! Once you see it, you can’t unsee it! There’s some art on the walls in some houses that has a meaning too....

sausagepastapot · 17/06/2020 17:35

Totally utterly love it. Like PP, I wish I could rewatch it for the first time...I'm jealous of people who haven't seen it and get to experience it!!

yearinyearout · 18/06/2020 09:27

I'm a lone voice here, I gave it a few episodes.

And that's where you went wrong! You've missed out in the best series ever made.

iklboo · 18/06/2020 18:08

I don't think Jesse was gormless. At the beginning he was naive and thought he knew it all (what young men don't) but with the later episodes his back story emerges - no spoilers - and he's the constant whipping boy. Aaron Paul plays the character really well. And he's definitely not a sidekick.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 18/06/2020 20:22

Jesse was a fab character. Apparently he was only going to be in a couple of episodes, but the actors gelled so well together, and the writers saw the potential for some excellent storylines and ran with it.

I'm really glad they did.

One of my favourite characters though, is Mike.

iklboo · 18/06/2020 20:37

Mike is AMAZING. I'd love him to be that uncle that you can go to with your problems and he'd either comfort you & tell you to give your head a wobble or 'sort it out'. Grin

SchadenfreudePersonified · 18/06/2020 22:33

And if any bloke broke your heart, he'd go round and break their legs iklboo.

blankethog · 18/06/2020 22:54

One of the only series I wish I could forget and rewatch for the first time. I've watched it 3 times through Blush it is such a good series

frenchfancy81 · 18/06/2020 22:55

Best thing I've ever watched.

Germolenequeen · 18/06/2020 22:57

How very dare anyone call Aaron Paul gormless 😳
