Yes, I know I'm 12 years behind the times, but Breaking Bad?

Chicchicchicchiclana · 12/06/2020 21:15

I don't generally watch a lot of TV but times have changed.

I've watched 4 episodes of Breaking Bad and at times have literally had to hold on to my stomach and watch through my fingers. I sat through Ozark earlier in lockdown and didn't much enjoy the gore and violence in that but it seemed almost trivial in comparison to what I've seen in BB so far.

But so many people say it's the best TV series ever made. Should I continue?

No Spoilers Please!

I'm a fan - it's not in my top five of all time, but probably in my top ten.

I don't really remember the violence...?That's not really what it's about at all. Stick with it.

StarsandBellinis · 13/06/2020 10:09

You must stick with it! I watched the first series and then left it for about a year as I thought it didn't live up to the hype, only picking it up again because everyone kept telling me how amazing it got.. they weren't wrong! By the end of season 2 I was hooked and when the last episode ended I was bereft for days! Hands down, one of the best shows ever.

Mixedandproud · 13/06/2020 10:13

It’s fantastic! In my top 2 of best series ever!
Keep going with it is my suggestion. It’s so different to any other series I’ve seen.
Then you can go on to watch Better Call Saul next and have hours and hours of brilliant viewing ahead of you!
As a PP said if I could watch BB again for the first time I would.
(I love Ozark too).

AuntieMarys · 13/06/2020 10:14

We watched it last year and loved it. I do like violence though but thought it very funny.
Gangs of London ...now that IS violent

Time2change2 · 13/06/2020 10:15

Yes continue!! It takes the first season to warm up and get you hooked! The best thing I have ever watched before or since (watched it around 6 years ago)

AiryFairy1 · 13/06/2020 10:15

Oh I loved BB, I was bereft for days when it ended, so I recently thought I’d watch it all again.
But I just couldn’t do it, maybe because we’re in the middle of Ozark and it’s a similar vibe, so it’s just going to sit in my tv memory bank forever!

nobodysdaughter · 13/06/2020 10:29

Get past the first few episodes and it's less gory.
But god it's slow, with a small group of characters who are drawn in detail, with painfully long scenes between them. Saul is the best character in it, and he had to have his own series, because his character was so underused.
I enjoyed it but I watched it straight after the absolutely AMAZING masterpiece that is the Sopranos. I think my comparisons didn't help!

JeffJarrett · 13/06/2020 10:36

It's my all time favourite TV show. The character arcs are just perfect. The pacing, the plot, the length of the show, the ending. Perfect.

I watched it a second time a couple of years ago and enjoyed it even more than the first time through.

whoami24601 · 13/06/2020 10:54

Whenever I see these threads I get so jealous! I wish I could go back and watch it for the first time again! It does take a while to get going but bloody hell once it does it's amazing! Hands down best TV show I've ever seen.

ILiveInSalemsLot · 13/06/2020 11:01

After a few episodes, I was wondering what all the hype was about too but stuck with it as people kept telling me to and honestly, it’s some of the best tv I’ve ever seen.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 13/06/2020 17:03

Thanks for replying everyone - you've convinced me!

I like how actions have consequences in BB. And the cinematography is amazing at times.

CakeCakeCake21 · 13/06/2020 21:58

I thought it was amazing but I also had to watch it through my hands or while fiddling with my phone at times. Not so much because of the violence but the jeopardy to characters I cared about, like oh my God no, don’t make that choice!

Cruddles · 13/06/2020 23:28

I'm such an outlier with this show. I watched the first 3 series and was either frustrated or hated all the characters. I couldn't give a toss what happens to any of them and didn't enjoy it at all. I only persisted with 3 series because everyone around kept saying how great it was so i thought I'd eventually charge my mind. Nup. Happy if i never saw it again

Florabella · 14/06/2020 06:55

I'm behind the times too. On series 3. I do like it, but don't understand the adoration and everyone saying it is the best tv ever. Also don't find it that violent (but am also watching The Last Kingdom and Vikings, which are wall to wall violence 😂)

yearinyearout · 14/06/2020 07:08

Yes, it's brilliant. I'm watching now for the second time and still gripped!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 15/06/2020 16:57

It's only the second best thingever made.

Better Call Saul (which is effectively the prequel) is even better.

MamaBearThius · 15/06/2020 17:24

Funyons BITCH!! Grin

iklboo · 15/06/2020 17:27

We're rewatching it with DS. So, so good. It's a while since we watched it and have forgotten (or missed) loads. It's amazing. The chemistry - pardon the pun - between Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul is amazing. Great support cast too.

No spoilers but there's one episode in Season 3 called 'Fly' which apparently is the lowest fan scoring episode but we thought was an utter masterclass of two actors in a set piece.

pickingdaisies · 15/06/2020 17:33

I'm a lone voice here, I gave it a few episodes. DH was totally hooked. I didn't like it, although the cinematography was superb. It was just depressing and getting more so. I've decided I don't need to watch stuff I'm not enjoying, total Eureka moment.

Saucery · 15/06/2020 17:38

I was prepared to be a bit bored by Fly but it was utterly captivating.

I nearly ditched it after a few episodes but the box set was a gift from someone we knew would ask if we had enjoyed it so persevered. Glad we did, it is the best series we have ever seen. Ended up spreading out the last series because we never wanted it to end.

Really interesting to look up the Colour Wheel theories when you’ve watched it, too. Bit spoilery to do it beforehand although I did take the odd peek.

Couldn’t get into Better Call Saul even though he seemed one of the most interesting characters in BB.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 16/06/2020 10:10

What are the Colour Wheel theories Saucery?

Chicchicchicchiclana · 16/06/2020 12:28

I'm 2 or 3 episodes into Season 2 now. Still waiting to be wowed by it and Bryan Cranston is overacting his little socks off! I am obsessed with his bloody mouth hanging open all the time.

But ... I quite like the plot and the converging storylines.
