Does anything live up to Line of Duty???

I am a LoD fanatic. Have tried Happy Valley (it was good but didn’t like the cast as much and switched off in season 2). Spooks - episode 2 traumatised me and haven’t watched any more. Also find it hard to watch it as it’s 18 years old, no idea why!! Loved The Nest too. Maybe I’m obsessed with Martin Compston?? Anyway... LoD fans... is there anything as good out there?

Ooh I also second The Fall if only for Jamie Dornan!! It's absolutely edge of your seat fantastic

DKanin · 03/05/2020 00:28

I recently watched the entirety of line of duty and I seem to have the attention span of a gnat and find everything else I've tried to watch quite boring in comparison.

Give spooks another chance! That deep fat fryer scene was very out of character compared to the rest of it. I'm a little embarrassed to say this as it reveals how much binge watching I've been doing but I re watched the entirety of spooks (seasons 1-10) over the last few weeks. I'd forgotten how good it was, maybe give it another go!

I also enjoyed unforgotten, bodyguard, the missing, the stranger, safe (Netflix)

DKanin · 03/05/2020 00:28

@alwaysstressed the fall was really good!

DKanin · 03/05/2020 00:32

I forgot- you might possibly like Endeavour

MyBlueMoonbeam · 03/05/2020 00:39

Have tried Happy Valley (it was good but didn’t like the cast as much and switched off in season 2)

I'm sorry but are you insane 😳James Norton 🔥🔥🔥

I love line of duty, and am currently enjoying "How to get away with murder" on netflix. As most of the programmes already suggested are English, it's worth pointing out that its American but it's quite gripping. Lots of flashbacks and flash forwards which I usually can't tolerate but 'murder' (as its come to be known in this house) does it well and gives enough clues to keep your attention.

In a nutshell it's about a female lawyer and her students, lots of twists and turns and believe it or not...murder.
Try 2 episodes, see how you like it.

cherrytree63 · 03/05/2020 07:07

I enjoyed Stan Lee's Lucky Man.
The Killing (the American version)
Gangs of London (very violent)
Bullet Proof
Penny Dreadful

icelollycraving · 03/05/2020 07:57

No offence on c5. Love a bit of Viv. Bound to be somewhere online.

BovaryX · 03/05/2020 07:59

Spiral is good, you could binge watch 7 seasons!

Figgygal · 03/05/2020 08:01

The capture on iPlayer was great
Definitely worth a watch

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 03/05/2020 08:01

The missing was the show I enjoyed, dare I say, even more than LoD (which I love).

minmooch · 03/05/2020 08:06

The Tunnel
Ozark
Gangs of London
Bullet Proof
La Mante (French)
Marseille (French)

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/05/2020 08:06

We loved LoD and have also enjoyed:
Happy valley
The missing
Baptiste
The unforgotten
Bodyguard
Marcella
The two Harlan coben ones on Netflix, the stranger and safe
One of us
There was something set in Wales, was it called Missing? Very dark.
Save me and Save me too (written by Lennie James /Tony gates)
The Dublin murders

Plus others, there's so many to find but these were our recent ones . Nothing beats LoD though. I would also say give it a Few weeks and watch it again, it's actually better second time round especially the early seasons where you don't necessarily realise the links for later seasons

(We didn't like The Nest)

Fleetheart · 03/05/2020 08:11

I agree about Spirale. I really like it; it has the same mix of personal life vses crime cases as line of duty. Line of duty is something else though I agree and I just love Adrian Dunbar.

Fleetheart · 03/05/2020 08:12

The stranger by Harlan Coben is also pretty good

FamilyOfAliens · 03/05/2020 08:14

We prefer foreign language series - they just seem be better quality and focus on the characters rather than whether they’re easy on the eye, so they come across as more believable. Some we’ve enjoyed:

Twin
Trapped
The Bridge
Spiral

We started watching the new Norwegian drama State of Happiness last night and it’s already gripping!

AnnaMagnani · 03/05/2020 08:28

Bodies. Except the last episode but you can probably forgive that. A bit dated now in terms of NHS politics but apparently Jed Mercurio sees it as his best work.

Also The Detectorists. Took us a while to get into but absolute perfection.

The Wire. So good I had to stop watching when I was being bullied at work as it was like watching my workplace. One not so good season but the rest is amazing.

Didn't like Luther - too farfetched or The Fall - too much perving at female bodies on slabs.

The Bridge - can be brilliant, you can end up shouting at the TV 'no more plot!'

DeathMetalMum · 03/05/2020 08:29

Giri/Haji was originally on BBC last year we've got one more episode left on Netflix now and it's very good. One or two squeamish bits, and some subtitles as there are some Japanese parts, but very gripping.

OneInEight · 03/05/2020 09:03

I am watching "Before We Die" on C4 World Drama (subtitles) at the moment. It has the same adrenaline rush as LOD. But more killings, a bit of torture and some very incompetent police (plausible it is not). I am also quite enjoying "Mary Kills People" (C4 again) which again is relatively fast moving, lots of deaths and not all plausible (may not be for everyone as deals with euthanasia). Actually I enjoy a lot of the channel 4 world drama series as I have a far greater tolerance of implausibility if it is in a foreign language it seems.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 03/05/2020 09:24

So excited,
I just found Happy Valley, I hope it’s good!

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 03/05/2020 10:49

I think you can be confident that Happy Valley is just a tiny bit 'good' ...

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 03/05/2020 11:01

Ripper Street
Apple Tree Yard

Scott & Bailey

I really enjoyed Series 1 of Happy Valley but I'll need to rewatch Series 2 , lost the way with it .

Smillar2020 · 03/05/2020 11:45

Amazing suggestions to keep me amused during lockdown 👍

Don’t get me wrong I loved Season 1 Happy Valley and @mybluemoonbeam James Norton is swoooon. Just didn’t love the cast in general, didn’t attach myself for some reason (LoD has spoiled me - does anything match up to Marty, Adrian and Vicky?!)

Also The Detectorists. Took us a while to get into but absolute perfection.

How could I forget Detectorists? A gentle, warm story with typical British humour. Loved it.
