Just spotted this. May be rubbish. Made by Alex Garland who I think I am meant to know about.

I think it is sci-fi rather than crime, but seems to have a female lead ...

I'm giving it a go. Bit slow, but I'm open minded.

thenightsky · 15/04/2020 21:35

Now its turned weird.

Faircastle · 15/04/2020 22:06

I quite enjoyed this, but I like a bit of sci-fi.

Lots of religious imagery (the plainsong-type choral music, the Devs block almost like a cathedral, the boss with a giant halo above him)

RhubarbTea · 16/04/2020 01:00

Mmm I noticed the religious motifs as well. Don't really know what to think, it reminds me a little of a thing on Netflix I enjoyed with Jonah Hill but forget the name of.
So. Many. Questions.

Deathraystare · 16/04/2020 06:51

I am enjoying it so far though of course all the techie stuff goes right over my head!

HarrietTheShy · 16/04/2020 07:11

I'm ahead a few eps. It's PAINFULLY slow. Maybe two things happen each ep and they are dragged out and talked about for the rest of the ep.

Deathraystare · 16/04/2020 10:09

Well if it is slow it might help me understand a bit more!!

stumbledin · 16/04/2020 13:24

I fell asleep!

Alex Garland wrote the Beach, and amongst others the film Ex Machina.

I see the second episode is tonight. Shall I just jump in and not worry about not seeing all the first episode if it is so slow?

OP posts:
RhubarbTea · 16/04/2020 15:08

No no, you definitely need to watch the first episode @stumbledin otherwise it will make even less sense Grin It's also excellent, so would be a shame to miss any.

I really enjoyed it even though I found it deeply creepy and actually affected my sleep, should have watched it so late at night. (And after so much sugar... Ahem)

I have so many questions and desperately want to talk through possible theories about episode 1 i.e what the feck is going on, it's like Spooks but on steroids in that particularly respect, but just with much less happening.
Alex Garland is a good writer, The Beach is a super unsettling read so this series seems like it will go the same way.

stumbledin · 16/04/2020 15:34

RhubarbTea - please go ahead with your theories. Will probably help as I watch the rest of episode 1! Thanks

EmNetta · 16/04/2020 16:34

Wish I'd been asleep......But I'm not fond of sci-fi, so no plans to watch any more. Thanks fdr comments.

Footle · 16/04/2020 20:05

Was his brain being downloaded?

thenightsky · 16/04/2020 21:05

What did Sergi see on the screen that scared him so much? And how did he get filmed killing himself AFTER he'd been murdered? Too many questions.

Doje · 16/04/2020 21:28

Watching episode 1 now. Came onto MN to find a thread as I think I'm gonna need all the help I can get with this one!!

thenightsky · 17/04/2020 11:09

Started watching the second episode last night, but both DH and I fell asleep after 20 mins. We might give it another go tonight.

RhubarbTea · 17/04/2020 12:38

Okay so I have some theories... Grin

I feel like we believe that S died when we first saw, the, well, the incident. But actually how do we know that? What was a last gasp could have not been after all. The second death may have really been him, perhaps there is a gap of time that we are not being shown that will later explain why he did what he did? The missing hours.

Maybe he was reading on the screen how he would behave in the future? Like it was all predetermined and that freaked him out? I don't really understand why the code was so scary though. There are lots of religious motifs in ep 2 as well so perhaps it ties in to that... Hmm.

I still have many questions after episode 2...

stumbledin · 17/04/2020 17:31

I am wondering whether part of the plot isn't a bit like Capture, about how you cant trust what you see on the screen. Or that Sergi did die and some random dead body was burnt for the girlfriend to see.

It isn't clear to me whether the allegations that he stole code was when he was in his original job or when he was in the DEV HQ. Whilst there he only looked at the screens and didn't seem to have the opportunity to download and of the program he was looking at. Which upset him so much he ran away.

I think what they are working on is creating a virtual representation of the CEO / Cult leader's dead daughter. Presumably the giant statue is also her.

What I dont understand is how the Russian spy master died when during the fight it looked like the CEO's henchman was coming off worse.

I think the ex boyfriend will solve the problem on the technical level while she confronts people and does investigation. They will get back together as she will think everything with Sergi was false, part of his work as a russian plant.

I think the street person living in the front door is in fact someone undercover keeping an eye on him? her?

Does anyone know what the tech corporation is actually said to be doing. Is it a social media platform like facebook, or creating online games or ...

thenightsky · 17/04/2020 17:42

I thought he was spying via his wrist watch? He went to the toilet and adjusted it. Then went back to his desk and placed his wrist so the watch face was directly in front of the screen.

Campervan69 · 18/04/2020 00:48

Yes he was definitely recording with his wrist watch - the boss man even said something about his James Bond spy gadget watch or something. It is a very slow and a little bit over pretentious show but I am going to keep on watching it in any event.

RhubarbTea · 18/04/2020 13:25

The Russian dude died because the evil security dude happened to/deliberately got him in a position where he could break his neck and he did so. Bit grim.

Because I am bitter I am questioning everything we are being shown, so it might be that the Russian spy thing is a massive foil, or that the Devs people are actually good and what they are trying to do is good and they hate having to kill people along the way. The conversation between the bearded leader dude and the blonde sidekick seemed to point to that, in episode one. When they are sitting outside. I dunno, something about it made me think we will end up seeing them as the good people after all. Maybe not...

stumbledin · 18/04/2020 13:29

Thanks to all! Seems even though it is slow I still cont catch everything ... it does makeme quite sleepy.

SerenDippitty · 18/04/2020 22:18

Been bingewatching this today. Not finished yet. Quite enjoying it though as PP say it is a bit creepy. I thought the title was a play on words - it can be read as Deus as well as DEVS and there does seem to be religious imagery.

RhubarbTea · 19/04/2020 00:27

I finished episode 4 this eve and a fleeting thought from early on about many worlds being a part of this was confirmed. The bit in ep 1 where Forrest says he's 'not a fan' of the many worlds theory during the presentation/interview thing. I think that will be a theme they return to later on...
I found episode 4 quite frightening. I have to watch just after DC are in bed so I have time to focus on other things before I go to sleep. I don't watch scary stuff as a rule so I have v low tolerance Grin

cushioncovers · 19/04/2020 12:35

I liked it. Only watched episode 1 so far.

RhubarbTea · 19/04/2020 16:08

Ohh I've worked out why Mr Beardy Dude isn't a fan of the many worlds thing... cos of his daughter. D'oh.
