Apologies if there's already a thread, but I couldn't see one. Anyone watching? Apparently this is a new series.

I'm waiting for the bench seats to make their inevitable appearance......Grin

BruceandNosh
They should have bought a bungalow- I agree. Or a house with a lift. Smile

jay55 · 06/05/2020 09:12

I hope they sell up and buy a bungalow. Actually this couple should partner swap with no ramp couple and the two with mobility issues can live together happily with lots of wonderful ramps and other mobility features in a cosy bungalow. While the other two have a house 7 stories high with steep steps.

BruceAndNosh · 06/05/2020 09:15

I loved the idea of the kitchenette on the top floor but I would have hidden it inside a run of wardrobes. I like the idea of a kettle and a mini fridge so that I can make tea without going downstairs

peachypetite · 06/05/2020 09:16

The top floor could have been rented out/ air bnb as it was self contained.

CanIHaveAPenguinPlease · 06/05/2020 09:17

The more I watch these programs the more grateful I am for dh who looks after me so well. I can’t move today so I’ve had breakfast in bed & he will help me up & to shower when he’s finished his work call. He’s on at me to put in a lift but I don’t want to yet as I worry I’ll use it more than needed.

twosoups1972 · 06/05/2020 09:33

Did anyone think they were an odd looking couple? They looked more like father and daughter. You could tell the production team had problems with this couple, all the references to her not making up her mind, saying she 'hates' the idea etc.

I preferred Robert's - loved the top floor studio accessed via a lift. But I didn't like the windowless red vestibule - think I'd have nightmares about being stuck in it and the doors not opening!

FlamingoAndJohn · 06/05/2020 09:38

I have realised that this series all of Laura’s designs have been the same.
Take out all the walls. Create an entrance hall opening into a kitchen on one side with dining space on the other. Some of the space sectioned off as a living room.
I’m sure her designs before were more interesting.

LaureBerthaud · 06/05/2020 09:53

They didn't look odd. They were different ethnicities and didn't follow the convention of the man being taller than the woman. I think it's mean to comment on the couple's appearances- just critique the designs,

peachypetite · 06/05/2020 10:01

@laure completely agree. Commenting on things like them being an odd couple isn’t what the thread is about.

Justwannabe1 · 06/05/2020 10:34

Oh actually did anyone notice if they went for the outdoor thing? I can’t recall seeing it?

So not only will they be rattling around waiting for the bank holidays for family coming over but they will be roasted by that direct sun.

I feel that poor man gained absolutely nothing from this, no mobility solutions whatsoever.

Crickets · 06/05/2020 10:36

Doh, of course he isn't a cosmetic surgeon. He's a cosmetic dentist and doctor. Both Hanna and Martin know more than anyone else around the table or their talentless offspring.

LadyEloise · 06/05/2020 10:38

@Crickets
???

I'll go back to what I said originally. They needed two different designers for the second series. Did actually like Roberts design for the most part this week though. Laura has become even more predictable than Robert this series. Makes the foot print smaller (or doesn't extend). Creates a hallway with open light to the second floor. Creates a front to back of house view with open plan kitchen diner and closed off lounge. Uses a bold colour. Still enjoy the programme though 😂

covetingthepreciousthings · 06/05/2020 10:56

I hope they sell up and buy a bungalow.

I was surprised that they spent that amount of money rather than buying somewhere else, the stairs seemed so many and so high for someone with mobility issues.

I'm always surprised by people who are only in a couple and don't have enough space in a 5(?) bedroom house... Confused

TreeTopTim · 06/05/2020 14:14

This week's episode was boring and underwhelming.

Neither design fitted the couple's needs. The huge front entrance seemed like wasted space. Who needs 3 sinks. That small one was absolutely pointless. The stairs were impractical. The entrance decor was dark.
It's definitely time for new architects in the next series.

Carriemac · 06/05/2020 14:52

Roberts design was best by far, but having met the couple I bet neither of the architects wanted to win it !

BonnesVacances · 06/05/2020 15:03

What a waste this week was with such a big budget! I would love to see what that house would have looked like if it had been on Old House New Home.

BruceAndNosh · 06/05/2020 15:08

I wonder if they had decided that the house was wrong for them but it was also too wrong to sell to someone else.
So they wanted to create something that WOULD sell as a typical family home then move to something that really could meet their needs now and in the future.

BruceAndNosh · 06/05/2020 15:09

There is a tendency when buying or renovating a house to make decisions based on the life you WANT to lead rather than the one that really exists.
I rejected so many houses last time we moved because there wasn't room for my beautiful dining room table, ignoring the fact that we use our dining room at Christmas and maybe twice more during the year. And I could have bought a smaller table

Callmesausage · 06/05/2020 16:02

The snug looked awful, like the lounge in a care home. Also didn’t like Robert’s design at all, hideous red vestibule and downstairs bathroom when there was a lift, so it wasn’t necessary to put a bathroom downstairs.

BekindStayhome · 06/05/2020 17:27

I disagree the entrance was wasted space - for a couple with so much stuff that storage was essential and it's not like they were short on space with 2 people in a 5-bed house. I'm biased though because I'd love a big space like that! I think there was also supposed to be space for a lift in later years but that wouldn't actually work with their stairs.

CoolShoeshine · 06/05/2020 17:32

It was strange this week how Laura did a design just for the downstairs, leaving £50k for the upstairs which she didn’t bother tackling at all. Complete contrast to the week 2 young family who also had a large house and budget, Laura made a huge effort both upstairs and downstairs and transformed the house to suit their needs. I think there was more going on behind the scenes this week than we realised, I think the couple must have made it difficult for the programme makers otherwise I think the designs, value for money and finished product would have been different.
I missed the first 10 mins, did they say where the couple got their money from (sorry, nosey)

covetingthepreciousthings · 06/05/2020 17:45

Laura has posted a live story on Instagram about last nights episode, makes for an interesting watch.

They decided against the timber frame outside that she included because the lady had a fear of spiders.. Hmm
Personally I'd be more bothered about all Th one bikes and boxes everywhere harbouring spiders..

Totally sense there was more going on behind the scenes on this episode.

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 06/05/2020 17:58

Who needs 3 sinks. That small one was absolutely pointless.

Pointless in the kitchen, yes, but oh so worth it just to hear Angela Scanlon say “What’s this, some sort of gerbil sink?” Line of the series!

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 06/05/2020 18:00

The Red Vestibule was insane. Can you imagine the local builders in Margate being asked to build all those curves?

I was curious to know if the couple had any kids together.
