A sleeping bag?? For God's sake, is it just me or is this programme losing the plot?

I didn't mind that, it's reasonably realistic to use stuffed fabric for fancy dress. It was really quite odd that one of the people making water melons didn't take advantage of that and produced something that just hung straight.

Was it last year when they had them making stuff out of tents or deckchairs or something? I really felt that one jumped the shark.

I also struggled to understand how the crisp bag did so well. Just writing "Chips" on something and sticking a few random bits of fabric on seems a hell of a cop-out.

They always have a fancy dress round , it’s been in every series usually on children’s week

CaptainMyCaptain · 07/05/2020 14:58

Can any kind poster point me in the direction of a simple, straightforward downloadable pdf pattern for a toddler (18m) dress similar to the first one they did yesterday? I'm sure I've seen one maybe instagram I'll get back to you.

Hope that helps. I would like to make one too but I only have grandsons and the youngest is 9.

heylittlehenwhenwhenwhen · 07/05/2020 17:24

Thank you @CaptainMyCaptain- I'll check it out later Smile

TimothyTerrible · 07/05/2020 22:41

I assumed that he had been told to use Chips instead of Crisps. The BBC sell a lot of their programmes internationally and chips travels better - I think almost everyone except us calls them chips.

Halsall · 08/05/2020 00:01

This is a pretty pattern for a toddler, @heylittlehenwhenwhenwhen - seems to come in a wide range of child sizes from 0 upwards, and is a PDF. Not with smocking but similar, and with a few useful interchangeable style elements. The Geranium dress

Style Arc do a very similar one (the Andie dress) but it looks as though it's for slightly older than an 18m-old.

Roussette · 08/05/2020 07:45

Chips! Harumph!

It looked silly and sounded silly!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 08/05/2020 08:23

That's a nice little pattern, Halsall

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 08/05/2020 08:24

Re patterns, a friend shared this blog with me.

thefoldline.com/2020/05/07/the-great-british-sewing-bee-2020-series-6-episode-3-sewing-patterns/

Some of the patterns have PDF versions, so I’m thinking this means they could be downloaded.

I’m waiting for the koi fabric to make DH some pyjama bottoms and now I’m seriously hoping there will be enough left over to make some dungarees for youngest DD. Some of them were seriously cute.

TerrifiedandWorried · 08/05/2020 08:37

As they unzipped the watermelon, DD was shrieking "She's made a vulva costume!"

CaptainMyCaptain · 08/05/2020 08:39

As they unzipped the watermelon, DD was shrieking "She's made a vulva costume!"
I thought that (but kept the thought to myself because I thought it was just me).

IndigoApple · 08/05/2020 10:10

@TerrifiedandWorried DH said it looks like a vagina! 😂

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 08/05/2020 10:13

Fancy dress is often about effect though really isn't it? Speaking from the school of cardboard box/felt/tin foil fancy dress here. Although I know this is a sewing competition so a bit different.

I'm not sure I could get a sleeping bag under the foot of my machine though.

heylittlehenwhenwhenwhen · 08/05/2020 10:20

Thank you everyone for the links!

Me too!! Grin

alittlecloudfloatinginthesky · 08/05/2020 12:05

Is it weird that my two favourite programs are this and 'SAS who dares wins? Complete opposites.

Favourite part of this week's show was Patrick threatening to send Esme home!
He used to be the scary judge, very strict and serious, but I like the more relaxed Patrick better. Maybe not with the pea apple hat on though.

iklboo · 08/05/2020 12:43

Patrick has definitely relaxed into his role. He's much more fun now.

TerrifiedandWorried · 08/05/2020 14:06

Alittlecloud - me too!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 08/05/2020 16:34

As they unzipped the watermelon, DD was shrieking "She's made a vulva costume!"

Your DD is more technically correct than I was, muttering "It looks like a fanny"

Haggisfish · 08/05/2020 20:17

Haha-unusually i didn’t spot the Punani likeness!

Starksforthewin · 09/05/2020 02:45

I do get irrationally annoyed at the competitors who don’t manage their time properly, and make poor decisions as a result.

Ditto with the Bake Off. Mind you, I think the producers on that show deliberately make the time allowed tighter than it need be, to build up some sense of faux ‘peril’.
I don’t watch these shows to see a mad rush with threatening music... I just want to see people show off their skills and hopefully have enough time to educate me as well!

JudyCoolibar · 09/05/2020 06:19

I know there have to be some sort of time limits to create a level playing field, but I wish they'd be more sensible about them. In RL you wouldn't serve an incomplete meal to fit an arbitrary time limit, nor would you leave something you had sewed without buttons or with the hem undone. Some very good sewers get knocked out early when they actually have the capacity to do much better.

2Rebecca · 09/05/2020 07:32

I think doing it quickly is part of the challenge and is important if you're a chef or professional tailor. You know it's part of the criteria when you enter. I'd be rubbish at the time limit as very slow cutting out

SoupDragon · 09/05/2020 09:01

Usually the majority of the contestants finish within the time limit though. I agree that the time is what adds the challenge - they are all good sewers.

I could definitely make all the items in the pattern challenge so far because I am methodical. Could I have done it in the time limit? Probably not.
