CRISPS
CRISPS!!!
Not chips. The Great BRITISH sewing bee

I was also shrieking this at the telly!

KatyMac · 06/05/2020 22:14

Thanks @MoltenLasagne - I use that for hand sewing on my denim jackets - I wasn't sure it could be machine sewn with (despite the name)

Is it very tricky?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 06/05/2020 22:16

I loved the tie-dyed dungarees and Clare's "Africa" ones (and the star ones)

Some of those kiddie models were fab! The girls were much more relaxed and confident than the boys.

Peaseblossom22 · 06/05/2020 22:23

I had several summer pairs of hot pants in lemon and blue etc just like the ones Therese made . I am in my fifties so this was in the 1970s

SoupDragon · 06/05/2020 22:23

I guessed Whole Watermelon would be the one who would go but wasn't sure of her name - at least now there's only one of the virtually identical pair left!

LIZS · 06/05/2020 22:24

Watching final of s1 - Ann, Sandra and Lauren with judge May. When did May morph into Esme?

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 06/05/2020 22:31

Series 3 maybe? I think May was only in it for 2.

MoltenLasagne · 06/05/2020 22:47

@KatyMac it's fiddly but not impossible. If you figure out your tension you're half way there but you have to sew pretty slowly and sometimes (if your machine is temperamental like mine) it will still decide to skip a stitch or wobble.

But even if you have to unpick three times and redo it it'll be faster than handsewing! That sounds like dedication!

KatyMac · 06/05/2020 22:55

I sew 3-dimensional art pieces/tapestries (that I buy from charity shops) onto jackets - it really doesn't take long

I am currently sewing Guipure lace on to the bottom of a wedding gown by hand - now that takes a while - but at least there is no beading.....that can take days to handsew!

MoltenLasagne · 06/05/2020 23:01

Wow that sounds beautiful. Yes beading is the slowest, I did just three rows of beading on a top and gave up, decided I preferred the minimalist look.

KatyMac · 06/05/2020 23:04

Grin there is a bit of the lace somewhere on the thread with the cat sleeping under it (he needed to help) - the skirt was a curtain and the lace from a sheer/net curtain - I likes a bit of up/recycling

& if I can find the right pattern I am making a jacket too

Me too! Why did he do that?

I don't have a problem with hand sewing, I find it quite relaxing. Possibly because I learned to sew by hand first.

IndigoApple · 07/05/2020 08:59

Re crisps/chips I think he probably realised he didn't have time to do 5 letters and/or thought the R was too difficult! Grin

Lightweight! Angry

That alone should have sent him home! Grin

I wonder if Hazel didn't have enough material to cut a new pocket? At first I thought that maybe she was stressing about the time to cut a new pocket - she hadn't even sewed it on yet - but when she cut out and stitched the falling astronaut I realised it wasn't about the time, she obviously couldn't cut a new pocket.

CaptainMyCaptain · 07/05/2020 10:04

It's the shame that let Hazel down because I like her other work. Her colour combinations are lovely. I hope she has a better week next week.

fourquenelles · 07/05/2020 10:44

Creeps in to ask "Am I the only one who thought there wasn't much sewing in that grape outfit?" Creeps out again.

CaptainMyCaptain · 07/05/2020 10:57

You are probably right, more pipe cleaner twisting, but it was very clever. 'Textiles' rather than 'needlework'.

Wolfcub · 07/05/2020 11:09

Fourq I completely agree. Looked effective but no sewing involved

Haggisfish · 07/05/2020 11:22

I thought she should have gone for an aubergine!

fourquenelles · 07/05/2020 11:46

I do think it was very clever but was annoyed it was picked as garment of the week. On the other hand the little rail of smocked dresses along side it brought a lump to my throat as my daughter is now 31 and I have grandsons not granddaughters.

Back in 1975 when I was slender with no boobs and rocked a pixie cut I wore camel brown dungarees sans anything underneath to go clubbing. No photos exist fortunately

heylittlehenwhenwhenwhen · 07/05/2020 11:47

Can any kind poster point me in the direction of a simple, straightforward downloadable pdf pattern for a toddler (18m) dress similar to the first one they did yesterday?

I have been wading around in google for ages and am a bit overwhelmed. My skills are very basic so no zips or buttonholes yet!

SoupDragon · 07/05/2020 11:55

I loved the grapes but honestly thought she would be criticised for "no sewing".

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 07/05/2020 12:35

Did they manage to get through an episode with no mention of drag queens? I didn't notice any.

I'm not into the beardy wokey blokeys either. They are over-marked too much for my liking.

Hazel might well leave next week, which will be a shame as I like her use of colours and the way she tends to be good when experimenting with things she doesn't know, like the smocking this week. I don't know why she didn't just unpick that pocket and either replace it or leave it off.
