The Broadchurch reveal was a let down and frankly a cop out.

That particular character hadn't been developed so it was like a betrayal of trust to throw that out at the last minute

No amount of deductive skills could have identified the culprit because we weren't given any of the relevant information.

That's a damn good point about the injections. They wouldn't have gone along with just accepting an injection from one another or injecting the kids.

I thought the sleepwalking theory for padlocking the door could be right. After all, surely a parent would notice a padlock on the door and think something was off unless they expected it to be there. But then I remembered that the pathologist found a set of keys with the receipt, in what looked like the rubbish. So whoever locked the door actually threw away the key.

The packaging was for a "shed locking kit" / padlock and hasp.

I never knew those parts were called the hasp and staple. Every day is a school day.

MrsJoyless · 12/01/2020 20:26

I admit, I've just rewatched the whole thing with subtitles and pause button!

ktel1 · 12/01/2020 20:27

The mother may have bought the padlock in order to protect the children from harm.

It could be sleep walking or it might relate to some other perceived danger.

I don't think she's responsible for this.

I'm trying to think of scenarios whereby the lock and even the injections may have been given to the girls with good intentions to protect them .

However, that wouldn't explain why the parents were injected - or the fire..

peanutfoldover · 12/01/2020 20:27

What are your conclusions @MrsJoyless?

peanutfoldover · 12/01/2020 20:29

I think Tom is a sinister character in some way. He may not have done the crime itself, but I think he was behind the reason for it. Either pushing Kate to the brink of madness via gaslighting or Jess doing some kind of crime of passion.

Why the pine needles? Did Iris try to run away??

peanutfoldover · 12/01/2020 20:30

And Kate, she had pine needles too

MadeForThis · 12/01/2020 20:31

Could the girls have heard/seen something and tried to run away. Someone then padlocked them in the room.

MrsJoyless · 12/01/2020 20:31

I conclude that I miss a lot if I am knitting or ironing in front of the telly. I just wanted to see for myself everything mentioned on this thread, particularly the wheelchair and the padlock. During the beach party, Kate was talking on the phone at a distance. Who was she talking to when everyone else was on the beach?

Yes and do you remember at the barn dance she said she goes to slimming world as she needs any excuse to get away.

And then Jess jokingly said the men shouldnt be allowed near fire and Kate looked all thoughtful as if she was plotting Toms death.

Personally I’d rather die than sit in a slimming world group clapping because Karen gained 3 pounds again but she’s planning on losing half a pound next week.

Just the thought of the weighing in queue is making me want to inject myself with something!

MrsJoyless · 12/01/2020 20:40

So which other character looks like they might go to slimming world...?

ktel1 · 12/01/2020 20:42

I've watched it 3 times now- sad I know and very unusual for me.

I'm just very intrigued by it.

I think it's because of the combination of factors the padlock, injections and the fire.

It just makes it more difficult to understand how it could be carried out.

On rewatch I was looking out for different things each time.

I wasn't necessarily watching everything closely , more zoning on on certain details.

For instance once I was looking at Jess, Kate and the girls in present day to see if anyone had any noticeable injuries post crash- to try and gauge the time frame between that day at the beach and the fire.

I was also just double checking that Charlotte was disabled the whole time- she never walked regardless of time frame- she was either sitting, being carried or pushed.

The padlock. Am I right in thinking it was on the inside of the door? So when the cop went up the ladder into that room, he couldn’t get into the rest of the house because the door was padlocked on the inside? Was there anyone in that room?

CheekyFucker · 12/01/2020 21:02

Charlotte had Cerebral Palsy from a traumatic birth. She was not seen walking at any point, but she did stand with her Daddy on the beach. She was the one with the pine needles in her pjs and feet which is strange - none of the others did.

Kate's depression was improving - started with the traumatic birth. Her marriage to DT was clearly at risk. At the beach he whispered 'why don't you leave and take the children with you'. He also said 'can't we just have one good day?', plus shagging her best friend is never a good sign.

Jess (policeman's wife) is having IVF. That might be why she is shagging DT. There was mention of embryos being put back in next week. Perhaps the car accident resulted in her losing a baby?

The car accident must have been fairly recent due to the candles still being in the rubbish. I don't think it was the day before.

The injection sites appeared to be on all 5 of them. The Mum was in the hall. She would have injected herself in the bed and stayed there if murder suicide. I think she was trying to save her babies.

The story line is swapping about all over the place. All of them will have some motive. I think the young lads are a red herring.

I thought it odd that the Policeman's son said there was a burglar and the policeman said to Jess for her to go.

Mother was known to like a spliff and also wine. She purposely drank and drove and DT let her. That was odd too.

Several of them were fully dressed attending the fire. Surely you would just go rather than change into a buttoned shirt.

The other GP was wholly unprofessional to mention Kate's mental health at the dinner table. My money would be on him as he was fully dressed and his wife did nothing and said nothing.

Excellent programme. Looking forward to the rest of the episodes.

CheekyFucker · 12/01/2020 21:04

@Seeingadistance padlock was definitely on the outside of the door as the Police Officer felt it. Keys were in the rubbish. I only saw one bed in the room so not sure if all three girls were in there. It looked bigger than a 2 bed room.
