There were other bits and pieces I picked up on but I'm not sure that they're relevant could just be misdirection.

The Dad was making videos and in one in the garden Charlotte was dressed as a doctor and Iris had a minor injury from football .

It was clear from the conversation that they were used to talking about medicine and injuries- would be very conducive to accepting injections to "make things better".

There was a lot of focus on Kate's drinking and depression/medication- because it is referred to so much I'm inclined to discount it- too obvious.

They focus on the locals yobs a few times - another misdirection I think

I was trying to see if the kids were wearing seat belts in the back seat of the car but it wan't clear.

The car rolled over and it looked pretty serious- it's hard to imagine that no one suffered any injuries- still possible they were lucky and only suffered minor injuries though.

2 bed house. Duh.

Bunnybigears · 12/01/2020 21:06

One thing that shocked me was being on 10mg of anti depressants was teated like 'ooh obviously a bit unhinged' a very large proportion of the adult population will be on anti depressants at any given time. I know I currently am and would hate to be an automatic suspect in a crime because of it. I am aware it isnt real though Grin

ktel1 · 12/01/2020 21:06

the padlock was on the outside of the door- so someone had essentially locked them in

ktel1 · 12/01/2020 21:07

It was Emily who had pine needles on her feet and in her pyjamas. At least that's the only name that the pathologist mentioned.

CheekyFucker · 12/01/2020 21:09

Carol, Mum of DT, was phoned from the house 15 minutes before the emergency calls, but there was nobody on the line. She was the one who Kate told to fuck off at the beach and said 'better if he just went' at the hospital - of her own son. Perhaps to save him the hell without them or perhaps to say he should have just left her, or perhaps because she thinks he did it.

ktel1 · 12/01/2020 21:12

Cheeky Fucker- good point about the birthday candles- I had been wondering what they were .

I was wondering about them both being fully clothed. Kate had a different top on, blue long sleeved - looked like she had put a top on over her cream shirt- perhaps because she went outside?

CheekyFucker · 12/01/2020 21:14

@ktel1 yes, Emily with the pine needles. She was the oldest wasn't she? Around 9?

Perhaps someone was abusing her and she was going to say. Teacher would look good for that I reckon.

ktel1 · 12/01/2020 21:21

Cheeky fucker- yes Emily was the eldest- Iris the middle child and Charlotte the youngest

WhoWants2Know · 12/01/2020 21:23

I don't know if I buy the idea of a padlock to keep the kids safe.

If someone just wanted to keep the kids in the room, a simple hook and eye catch or a sliding bolt like on a toilet door would do it. The only reason to use a padlock is to make sure that someone else couldn't let them out.

ktel1 · 12/01/2020 21:25

On a trivial note. Does anyone else recognize the actor who plays Simon the teacher from the IT Crowd?

He was Philip in "The Work Outing" - the best episode of the series IMO- hilarious.

He took them to the theatre to see "Gay- a gay musical "

I still think of that when I'm watching him in this.

ktel1 · 12/01/2020 21:26

Whowants2know- or someone else getting in

WhoWants2Know · 12/01/2020 21:37

👆exactly. They wanted to make sure the kids stayed in that room and no one else could get to them.

That's chilling.

Seeingadistance · 12/01/2020 22:05

Ah, yes, that makes more sense for padlock to be on outside of door. And also provides the added element of ensuring that no one could get in.

Albless · 12/01/2020 22:13

I’m going to have to watch again, as reading all the posts here, I realise how many details I missed. I’m another one who initially wondered why David Tenant’s character was the pathologist!

I’m a Dunlop inhabitant too - waves to the other villagers on this thread - so was distracted by watching the extras and the backgrounds.

Clawdy · 12/01/2020 23:01

Why are people wondering why the policeman asked Jess to sort out the "burglar"? He murmured "Your turn...." and she got up with a sigh and tucked the boy back in bed. It was obvious that the child had been waking them each night with nightmares, and they took turns to pop him back into bed.

BonnesVacances · 12/01/2020 23:16

I think someone was either in the house or the girlfriend had just got into bed having started the fire, and that was the noise the boy heard.

SushiGo · 12/01/2020 23:21

I think it was obviously DT, he is going to try and pin it on the wife though. She wanted to leave with the kids and he wasn't going to let that happen.

I think it's going to be more about how difficult that is to prove and the 'but he's lovely, it can't have been him' dynamic that often gets played out in the press after family annihilation.

I hope Kate gets a voice somehow about what really happened if that is the case

StuckBetweenDarknessAndLight · 12/01/2020 23:25

Dammit, it's not on till Friday is it!

colouringinpro · 12/01/2020 23:36

really enjoyed it!

CheekyFucker · 12/01/2020 23:36

@Clawdy how is it obvious the child woke them frequently?

stumbledin · 13/01/2020 00:25

I do think film makers who obviously like doing clever things to try and be original, dont always realise that they aren't actually helping the story.

Because of the way it jumped backward and forward in time it was easy to miss details because you were having to work out which time frame you are in.

I know it would have been a bit boring, but quite honestly they could have had a couple of village gossips having a good natter about the two families and from that we could have got the background stories. Then they could have moved onto developing the plot.

Its the same in the Christine Keeler drama. Because of time jumps, I dont feel they have clearly explained everyone from her past or how she got to where she is.

And it doesn't help if they cant even record the sound properly.

And having too many men with beards!

Werking · 13/01/2020 00:34

Watched this tonight. My thoughts:

Yes to the mumbling. Had to put subtitles on.

I think it’s Jess who did it. I think the narrative is going to be that DT (Tom) is the prime suspect, as the husband/father is usually the one wot did it, but it won’t be him. The motive will be something to do with jealousy that Tom and Kate gave 3 children and she can’t have any. Possibly due to the car accident that Kate was responsible for.

Kate mentioning WW to Jess and Jess saying are you still going is a ruse on Kate’s part - going to WW is her cover story for why she’s out that particular evening. She’s possibly having an affair with Simon or going somewhere completely different, but they’ll discover during the investigation that she hasn’t been going to WW for a long time.

CheekyFucker · 13/01/2020 07:23

@Werking I think you are onto something with the WW. I had not thought of that.

Piggywaspushed · 13/01/2020 08:04

See that's what I mean about mumbling! I did not remotely hear that! Does that actress at all look like she would have ever attended Slimming World!!?
