Has anyone watched this?

It's always fun watching the last episode and seeing how wrong most of us were! For once, I actually haven't a clue, except DT is far too obvious, so probably isn't the culprit. Jess is interesting, and I did wonder if that brief sex scene flashback was just in her head.

WhoWants2Know · 14/01/2020 09:30

Just watching again.

If the girls were in the padlocked room, which was untouched by flames, why wouldn't the fire brigade with their ladders and breathing apparatus have gone in via the window to save them? Makes no sense.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 14/01/2020 09:32

I bet the girls weren't in the padlocked room though. It didn't look as if it was used?

WhoWants2Know · 14/01/2020 10:00

Also, the policeman had the receipt for the padlock from the bin, and went to look at the cctv from the shop--where it looked like Kate shoved it in her pocket without paying?

Squigean · 14/01/2020 10:10

I think that if the girls were padlocked into the room during the fire that it would have come up in conversation at the drunken dinner party.

Also why was that included - the man being sick (headteacher wasn't it?)

Steala · 14/01/2020 11:39

I've watched it twice. A scene that comes confusingly early is the forensic examination of the bin. This includes a receipt for the padlock (so Kate did pay!) and all 3 keys. So it wasn't to keep the children safe.

I'm confused about why the birthday candles are in there. Obviously, there are more birthdays than just Charlotte's, but could Kate or Tom have cleated put the car that day? To get bodies in the boot? Pine needles may be from the wood they walked through to the beach.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 14/01/2020 11:53

I'm sure it'll all become clear as the story unfolds.

ktel1 · 14/01/2020 11:59

Although there were birthday candles in the bin I find it hard to believe that the day of the fire was shortly after the car crash.

You'd think that there had to be some injuries after the car rolled over.

I couldn't see if the girls were belted in but even assuming they were- what are the chances that all 5 occupants came away from that with no visible injuries?

ktel1 · 14/01/2020 12:00

It did look like she shoplifted the padlock so confusing that there was a receipt for it on that day.

Were there 2 padlocks?

ktel1 · 14/01/2020 12:03

Squigean- you're right about the conversation afterwards amongst the friends/suspects

In those circumstances the padlock would have been mentioned as it was so unusual.

They all seem quite casual about that fact- unless they were already aware of it.

ktel1 · 14/01/2020 12:23

Another key question would be why did only the dad survive the smoke inhalation especially since the girls were in a locked room protected from the fire.

I think a lot of this will be clearer after the post mortem and the results of the toxicology report.

There are just too many unanswered questions right now.

WhoWants2Know · 14/01/2020 12:28

I think they showed the Headteacher vomiting to emphasise that he was drunk, having just accused Tom.

But on second watching, the dynamic between the headteacher and his wife was very odd.

An interview with DT.

He gives nothing away about the drama thankfully.

He does make the point, which I think we all sense, that each and every episode is going to shed more and more light on what is actually going on in the character's lives.

Peeling away the layers.

What we see in episode 1 provides very little information .

peanutfoldover · 14/01/2020 13:54

If Jess is a suspect, she seemed genuinely shocked by the fire and raised the alarm with her husband. So I don’t think fire was part of her plan.

peanutfoldover · 14/01/2020 14:00

I’ve decided to watch it a second time looking out for any missed clues. I’m off sick so bags of time and really bored.

One thing I didn’t notice before was the young lads passing around what looks like some beers at the barn dance.

peanutfoldover · 14/01/2020 14:26

The room was definitely padlocked from the inside. That’s weird isn’t it?! The lock was up quite high so I don’t think one of the girls could have reached it. But how could it be locked and the adults not be in the room?

ktel1 · 14/01/2020 14:31

peanutfoldover- why do you say it was on the inside?

When the policeman went in to rescue them he couldn't open the door because it was pad locked we see him pulling at the lock.

Werking · 14/01/2020 14:33

The policeman tells the detectives that it was padlocked from “the outside” when they are looking into the room and ask about it.

peanutfoldover · 14/01/2020 14:41

Ok I stand corrected! I genuinely heard inside.

At least that makes more sense!!

peanutfoldover · 14/01/2020 14:42

Now watching with subtitles!!

peanutfoldover · 14/01/2020 14:45

You see Kate con her phone at the beach. I think she was talking to the other GP and I’m extrapolating that to her having an affair with the other GP!

(Plucking at straws here)

Werking · 14/01/2020 14:56

peanut yes subtitles is the way forward Grin

I’m convinced the girls weren’t in that room.

@Clawdy that’s an excellent suggestion that Jess’s sex scene with Tom was in her head. A fantasy perhaps as she seemed to look up to him and think he was wonderful.

ktel1 · 14/01/2020 15:02

I was looking at IMDB and there are quite a few characters there that we haven't been introduced to yet.

We might not have seen the culprit yet.

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/01/2020 15:16

I always say subtitles are the way forward on dramas

They mumble 😂😂

nibdedibble · 14/01/2020 16:02

I thoroughly enjoyed this (I mean apart from the death, tragedy and tears at Simon's speech to the wee kids). Didn't find it confusing really apart from wondering why the word 'fell' is being used (it was on a banner as the bikes went through the village), initially I thought they must be a Scottish family in the north of England. Agree that the ceilidh was well weird, especially as they didn't have a caller (not that many Scots can do ceilidh dances without a caller any more I think, but I know a few who can I suppose).

DT is so good as a character with a bit of menace. They are all good actually.

Questions I have:

  • if they were sedated, why inject them somewhere obvious like the crook of the arm? And why has the forensic pathologist not identified what they were injected with? (Probably too soon.)
  • Was Jess in love with Kate? She didn't half let her eyes linger. I couldn't tell if it was the affection of a friend but it seemed a bit much to me.
  • Who in a wee village has adulterous sex up against a window fgs Grin Anybody could be walking their wee dug past your hoose
  • Lovely Scottish village, looks like you get a lot of house for your money. Where's the mix of accents and ages? Everyone seems vaguely middle class west coast Scots except Jess. It's usually a lot more varied than that.
