Is anyone else planning to watch this six part series? I vaguely remembered the killings and on seeing this advertised have now lost hours to reading up about it online and have also downloaded a book about the case. I’m really looking forward to this one!

I don't know, but they are referenced in some detail in the CAL book.

Withholding evidence could be abused but you have to ask how relevant it could be because they know roughly the documents that were withheld eg both parents had army records. It's not necessary to see them because no-one ever posited that the parents were the murderers or that the murders were related to their military past.

Julie obviously wasn't imprisoned for her role in the chequebook fraud but she'd already told three people about Jeremy's involvement before she went to the police so if she was offered immunity it didn't impact her story.

Parts of Sheila's medical records were withheld but not all and her consultant consistently said she wasn't violent to others.

It's interesting you mentioned Lockerbie. I know people who worked that case so I know the gap between public perception and the reality. In some ways social media has amplified that gossipy, public perception of all cases and people start to view rumours the same way they view accredited sources or detailed research. It's almost as though we've moved into a post-fact era which is concerning.

AppleJane · 29/01/2020 20:47

@LordOfTheWhys I absolutely agree about social media. Fortunately or unfortunately I have the sort of mind that needs to dig out the roots and not just believe everything on the surface. Even with court transcripts though it still depends how well the defence and prosecution play their parts with regards to presenting the 'facts'.

The girlfriend having the cheque book fraud does make her less credible imo. In the same way the cousin and her family as they all have their own interests to look out for. I don't know if they are lying or telling the truth but I'm not comfortable with them finding evidence.

At the risk of entering conspiracy theory territory, the senior investigating officer who was taken off the case apparently died in an accident before the trial and so they couldn't use his evidence. I can't find any info on the net about that. Was he alone or were there witnesses to the accident?

AppleJane · 29/01/2020 20:55

The BBC drama 'The Capture' looks at the 'strengthening' of evidence which is plausible (and hopefully not already happening!)

SouthWestmom · 29/01/2020 21:18

Did he shag the friend? Behind Jm back? I'm not sure what is true and what's invented

SouthWestmom · 29/01/2020 21:32

Also I feel like Colin Caffell lost a lot but all the sympathy is for JB?

SouthWestmom · 29/01/2020 21:50

Am I the only one watching????

Borris · 29/01/2020 21:57

I'm watching too

CoolCarrie · 29/01/2020 21:58

I am watching , what a total bastard he is, clearing out the twins room like that, no thought for their father. I hope Bamber never gets out.

Borris · 29/01/2020 21:58

Quite slow this week. I think next week will be better

SouthWestmom · 29/01/2020 21:59

This is what I'm finding hard - how much is true and how much for effect?

AdoptedBumpkin · 29/01/2020 22:08

I agree @Noeuf. Some things are true, e.g. the spiky hair thing last week.

SouthWestmom · 29/01/2020 22:14

Was that real? I posted about how odd that was

AdoptedBumpkin · 29/01/2020 22:15

Apparently so. I read a recent news article about it.

frillyfarmer · 29/01/2020 22:24

I'd like to know if his behaviour is exaggerated for this series - surely he can't have been that brazen?

I found the scenes with the boys room very harrowing - I can't understand how anyone can be heartless enough to bag everything up like that. It's so bizarre.

HeIenaDove · 29/01/2020 22:31

Jesus ..............that vicar

"EVEN for Sheila tragically deranged as she was"

AppleJane · 29/01/2020 22:35

Some scenes and characters have been created for the purposes of dramatisation.

Do those of you who are familiar with the facts of this case know which characters and scenes are fictional please?

SouthWestmom · 29/01/2020 22:35

@AdoptedBumpkin Shock
Shocked by that. Poor Colin seems like a decent chap.

Am getting v bored of the girlfriend staring moodily out of windows to indicate her tortured soul

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 29/01/2020 22:37

Given that the series is partly based on Colin's book I would expect there to be a definite basis of truth to the things involving him. I would imagine Bamber would dispute the way the motivation is presented though - one person's heartless is another person's getting on with an unpleasant job that needs to be done.
Re the selling of stuff from his parents' house, he has said he needed money urgently to pay for the funerals and to pay workers on the farm, but I don't think anyone has disputed the facts of what he did.

LordOfTheWhys · 29/01/2020 22:38

Noeuf DS is I'll so I'm sitting watching him instead - but I'll watch it tomorrow. The timeline on JB's affairs was murky. I think he was cheating on Julie. But it implied Julie told her friend that Jeremy had planned the murder before she knew he was cheating and definitely before he split up with her.
Apple the White House Farm book quotes from Taff Jones' notes and diary. They were part of the internal review.

SouthWestmom · 29/01/2020 22:49

Thanks lords it's very interesting in a macabre way. I asked dmum about it and she said everyone felt sorry for him and then it came out he was charged/arrested but there was always some uncertainty

AutumnCrow · 29/01/2020 22:55

I saw that one of the opening credits acknowledges that some characters as well as scenes have been made up for dramatic purposes. I think that is confusing tbh. And it's hardly necessary to move the narrative along given its a series.

AutumnCrow · 29/01/2020 22:57

X posted.

Which characters were made up?
