Sorry if there’s already a thread on this but I couldn’t find one.

Anyone else excited about this? I’m really looking forward to it, especially after seeing the trailer yesterday! There were no kids in the trailer though (unless I missed them) so not sure what’s happened to Neil the baby and Stacey’s bump! Apparently Uncle Bryn is hosting Christmas this year....

Same here Best! We like Leigh Delamere and Membury. Used to like Aust too, but you bypass it using the new bridge.

namechangenumber2 · 25/12/2019 23:53

Loved it but felt that Smithys accent wasn't quite right?! Not just when he spoke to Sonia, but in general!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 25/12/2019 23:56

His accent is different now, he's an LA boy 😂

GlummyMcGlummerson · 26/12/2019 00:01

You can DEFINITELY tell that James Corden is an A-Lister now. He looks very "shiny" these days

GlummyMcGlummerson · 26/12/2019 00:04

I like to think Smithy being different is on purpose, he's grown up in 10 years and is definitely one of the gang - as evidenced by saying "Neil The Baby" - old Smithy would have just said Neil or my Boy. He can't fight who he now is GrinGrin

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 26/12/2019 00:05

Smithy looks tanned tooGrin

Chancey1982 · 26/12/2019 00:07

Nooo that can't be the end?! I was hanging off my seat!

Defenbaker · 26/12/2019 00:17

Loved it. Gentle humour, nice little nods to previous story lines, and characters stayed true to form (except Smithy and his accent - but that was explained by his trying a bit too hard to impress his new girlfriend).

Enjoyed the obligatory rhyming "lovely sandwich... egg and cress, Ness!"

Neil 'the baby' was well cast - looked like he really could be Smithy and Nessa's offspring.Grin

Sonia's lines were cleverly written to reveal her true colours - beneath the fake smiles and pretty face she had an ugly attitude going on. Loved the looks that Nessa shot across the room when Sonia spoke of taking Neil to fat camp - jeez, she looked murderous at times! Don't mess with Ness!

Cliffhanger was a bit annoying, but does leave the way open for another special in the future. Maybe when they read all the fabourable reviews everywhere, it will tempt the writers to do another special, in a year or two (or Easter, if we're really lucky!). Who kmows, maybe one day we could see Neil "the baby" having children of his own?!

Chimchar · 26/12/2019 00:23

I just loved it. Every moment.
Can't believe the ending..... would love just one more!

elfbuddy · 26/12/2019 00:23

Neil the baby is the same person as the baby previously. I loved it. If I had to pick a service station it would be Aust but before it downsized 😂 Leigh Delamere was my’local’ in my teens and we used to drive out to go to BK as there wasn’t one in town (or a McDonald’s 😳)

Encyclo · 26/12/2019 00:34

I've just watched it again. It was lovely, so warm and funny and I just loved seeing them all again.

Twitter is going wild for it. I really hope they're encouraged to do another one.

Ruth Jones was heartbreaking at the end. "I loved you, with all my heart"

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 26/12/2019 00:36

"loves you" Smile

Encyclo · 26/12/2019 00:36

Neil the baby was fantastic. I love that he was the original Neil the baby.

Encyclo · 26/12/2019 00:36

Yes. Loves you.

Stupid auto correct

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 26/12/2019 00:38

She was heartbreaking,you're right.

Butterymuffin · 26/12/2019 00:46

'It's a tap'
'That's right'
GrinGrinGrin Loved it.

LuluJakey1 · 26/12/2019 00:51

I thought it was disappointing. Gavin and Stacey were more boring than ever. Dawn and Pete were over the top and not funny. Sonia was pointless. Gwen was boring. Bryn was unfunny and lacking in the layers of complexity the character used to have. Smithy was ok but a bit bland and again lacking in layers as a character. Dave Coaches and Doris were a miss and the children were just irritants. Pam and Mick just seemed to go through the motions as characters- not well written roles in this episode. Ruth Jones was the only good thing and the proposal at the end spoiled it - it wouldn't have happened. Too much time wasted on things that didn't matter. A few things made me smile. Lots made me irritated with it. I lived Gavin and Stacey but was so disappointed by this. Part of the problem was there was too much to re-establish in 1 hr and it was difficult to move it on.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 26/12/2019 00:56

Why would Dave Coaches be in it when he was left at the alter last series?

Gwen,Gavin and Stacey were ALWAYS boring, all the characters are boring but bring them all together and they're hilarious.

Chancey1982 · 26/12/2019 00:59

I can't believe the bad reviews, for the first 10 minutes I wasnt sure but then was roaring with laughter and shouting at the tv. Made my Christmas night that did. Was too much to cram into an hour. He'd better bloody say yes they were lovely co parents and nessa had softened. I've never commented on a public forum about a tv programme before lol but I really enjoyed that.

Defenbaker · 26/12/2019 01:44

@LuluJakey1 - Doris was missing, as the actress who played her is dead. I liked the way they raised a glass in her memory, it was a nice little tribute.

It's rare that a Christmas special lives up to expectations, but I think that for many long standing fans, this special did the job. It left me wanting more.

TheChosenTwo · 26/12/2019 02:02

I’m not quite finished but I’m disappointed, all the characters seem as though they’re exaggerated caricatures of themselves, feels really forced.
I think part of it was that in previous series, the funny things were the pauses and looks,l and the timing between characters whereas this special seemed all about getting as much across in a short a time as possible to maximise airtime which I get but it lost its authenticity for me.
I read that various actors haven’t ruled our future specials or even series’ so I don’t think this is the last we’ve seen of them.

funmummy48 · 26/12/2019 08:07

I thought it was just perfect.

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/12/2019 08:57

As I have never seen s&g I watched the special thinking funny and good

And now will watch s123

StraightenUpAndFryRight · 26/12/2019 09:25

I loved it. A couple of bits didn’t work but overall thought it was great. I thought Neil was good and there wasn’t too much with the kids and they were quite natural. Love Nessa doing tattoos and trying to get Doris’s house!

Pomegranatepompom · 26/12/2019 09:27

I loved it and didn’t want it to end. I have no problem with a slightly polished smithy, all just fab ( although Gav and Stacey remain irritating).
I hope there’s more to come!
