Gavin and Stacey Christmas Special 2019

Sorry if there’s already a thread on this but I couldn’t find one.

Anyone else excited about this? I’m really looking forward to it, especially after seeing the trailer yesterday! There were no kids in the trailer though (unless I missed them) so not sure what’s happened to Neil the baby and Stacey’s bump! Apparently Uncle Bryn is hosting Christmas this year....

How many times does he watch Brokeback Mountain on Christmas Day? Three?

Almost every episode has a nod to Bryn’s sexuality. Certainly by series two at least.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 29/12/2019 18:05

I've watched all episodes. Twice

Omg Grin

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 29/12/2019 18:06

He's all over Gavin when Stacey first beings him home. Think about when he's printing off the route home on the computer. Gavin is SO uncomfortable as he's all over him.

FlamingoAndJohn · 29/12/2019 18:12

I thought the idea with Bryn was he is gay, but is too naive and childish to realise it fully.

I have always read it as he is of an age or family when he might not feel comfortable coming out. I feel that he has lived in denial.

CanaryFish · 29/12/2019 18:13

I always figured Nessa made up half her stories if not most of them,
Kinda like Jay in the inbetweeners just no one ever called her out on her bullshit

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 29/12/2019 18:14

I have always read it as he is of an age or family when he might not feel comfortable coming out. I feel that he has lived in denial

That's exactly it

Doubleraspberry · 29/12/2019 18:16

Yes. It’s hard to imagine him ever living life as a gay man out in the open but he’s definitely a fan of the men. He clearly fancies Gavin something rotten.

simbobs · 29/12/2019 18:16

Yep, Bryn is definitely in the closet. It is very obvious, especially the stag do episode.
Although I really enjoyed this special the ending did not have the spine tingling effect on me that Smithy's speech at Nessa'wedding did. It left me gagging for more, though, and yet to make more episodes won't happen, in my opinion. James Corden has moved on, and I don't think he would marry Nessa. He's an Essex lad that wants to get on in the world but I don't think he could fit in in Barry on a permanent basis. He could have done so by now if that's what he wanted.

FlamingoAndJohn · 29/12/2019 18:17

I always figured Nessa made up half her stories if not most of them,

Wasn’t the point of John Prescott turning up at the wedding to prove that some of them were true?

Doubleraspberry · 29/12/2019 18:21

I think every single one of Nessa’s stories is true. She is the anti-Jay. Her impossible history is the joke.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 29/12/2019 18:31

I agree double

roiseandjim · 29/12/2019 18:34

I really enjoyed it and I'm so glad they didn't say what happened on the fishing trip! Very out of character for Nessa to propose but I loved her and Neil tbe babys relationship you can tell they're very close

OrchidJewel · 29/12/2019 18:40

Huge G+S fans here and was disappointed but after reading this thread I thought it was terrific Grin

I'm going to re watch

Squigean · 29/12/2019 18:42

Agree about Bryn would living happily as a gay man if he was young today. But I do think that because he's quite naive that because there was no one out and proud to help to realise how he felt means he's gay.

If that makes sense!!!

BarkandCheese · 29/12/2019 18:47

I’ve no doubt that Bryn is gay, but one question about him, and Gwen actually, is do they have jobs? I’m sure it’s never mentioned and while I can imagine Gwen having a some kind of admin assistant or receptionist type job, a bit like Stacy at the very start, I’m pushed to see Bryn with his low stress tolerance and general oddness doing anything.

WineGummyBear · 29/12/2019 19:20

I thought it mostly hit the spot. Some real highlights. (Towels, Nessa accepting cards for carol singing etc)

Don't agree with most of the criticisms:

Bryn hating on Gwen is not random. He's highly strung and she's mild with everyone.

Nessa's taps are random but will have fallen off a lorry and so are in keeping with her character.

The fishing trip joke had run its course though and the lengthy G&S scene is not why we tune in but their story is the necessary vehicle.

Overall a thumbs up from me.

Squigean · 29/12/2019 19:30

Plot twist: those towels won't have any absorption. They need to be washed first!!

Underneaththetree · 29/12/2019 19:32

I agree Double, when she shares some of her stories there are often other characters backing it up. Plus John Prescott turning up at the wedding.

Bryns sexuality- there was the bit when all the Essex boys stay at his and he puts up the topless female photograph then gazes at it for a bit too long, but other than that it’s always been hints that he’s possibly gay.

Yes, I always wondered what him and Gwen do for jobs! It’s never shown in the whole series whether they work or not.

Butterymuffin · 29/12/2019 19:37

He's an Essex lad that wants to get on in the world

No, he's a bit of a slacker who has got a business going doing what he knows, but otherwise wants to enjoy life, hang out with his mates and loved ones and do what's comfortable. Which is why aspirational Sonia was not right for him.

simbobs · 29/12/2019 19:54

I mean that he wants to move to the next life stage and get married, hence the aspirational Sonia. She is completely wrong for him, but he thinks that this is what he should be doing next. If he had thought Ness was the one he would have been the one proposing, and would have done so by now. He has a job that he could just as easily do in Barry, and be near his son, but didn't take that step.
It was made clear that Nessa found him a fitting parent and was happy with him as a part time lover, but realised that she would be cut out of his life if he was to propose to Sonia.
And yes, those towels would have needed a wash first.

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 29/12/2019 20:08

I don't think Bryn's sexuality is obvious at all. I'd always assumed he's Stacey's father.

He's Stacey's father's brother who took on a familial role after her Dad died.

He's gay, but he doesn't even know it.

There is no resolution to the fishing trip. Not ever.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 29/12/2019 20:31

Of course Bryn is gay. But I think he’s a virgin.

I don’t think he knows really, he’s quite innocent about Brokeback mountain.

Doubleraspberry · 29/12/2019 20:40

The towels weren’t new though. They were from Pam and Mick’s house. Pam just packaged them up nicely.

FlamingoAndJohn · 29/12/2019 20:45

The towels were new. I’m sure she talked about them being a new set. They had a tag on them.

Yes, I always wondered what him and Gwen do for jobs!
I always thought that Gwen had never worked as her husband was rather controlling and would have liked her to be at home rather than have independence. Then possibly a widows pension or his life assurance?

simbobs · 29/12/2019 20:54

Yes, I think the towels were new, too. They took a bit of poetic licence with the story there, as if Pam had taken her own towels she would have kept them to herself. On the other hand, does that mean that Pam hadn't bought her host a gift? That would have been rather rude.
