Sorry if there’s already a thread on this but I couldn’t find one.

Anyone else excited about this? I’m really looking forward to it, especially after seeing the trailer yesterday! There were no kids in the trailer though (unless I missed them) so not sure what’s happened to Neil the baby and Stacey’s bump! Apparently Uncle Bryn is hosting Christmas this year....

But I didn't get why she is giving Smithy money? ? Neil the baby lives with her so she is the one looking after him.

FabulouslyFab · 28/12/2019 18:07

Bryn snapping at Gwen - he was the same when under stress planning her birthday party!

Doubleraspberry · 28/12/2019 18:07

Pride. If Smithy has been basically footing the bills then she wants to give back.

Nonnymum · 28/12/2019 18:12

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz it's not just last names. The Yorkshire Ripper was called Peter Sutcliffe.

diddl · 28/12/2019 19:40

At the end of series 3 Nessa, Smithy & Neil were living together weren't they?

So that obviously didn't work out!

Doubleraspberry · 28/12/2019 19:42

No! We just saw a final scene with Smithy eating a takeaway on the island with the others. It could be inferred that he lived there (he said ‘what’s occurring?’ and they teased him for turning Welsh) but it wasn’t a definite.

Dozer · 28/12/2019 19:43

No, they weren’t living together or even dating.

Doubleraspberry · 28/12/2019 19:45

Oh, and he gives Nessa an affectionate pat too.

I have seen all episodes too much possibly.

MyOtherProfile · 28/12/2019 19:55

Yes. I always read that as a truce between Ness and Smithy.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 28/12/2019 20:33

I always took that final scene to mean they were together, particularly after standing up at the wedding and declaring there was ‘something’ between them.

Doubleraspberry · 28/12/2019 20:35

I think it was deliberately ambiguous.

Underneaththetree · 28/12/2019 21:06

Who else would Doris leave the house to though other than Gavin and Stacey? Wasn’t there the bit about her only daughter being ‘a nasty piece of work’

tiredvommachine · 28/12/2019 21:14

"OH, Dor. Where's the salad?"
"OH, fatty. Where's my cash?"
Xmas Grin

Butterymuffin · 28/12/2019 21:17

Yes, her daughter Myra Wink I bet she did leave the house to Gavin.

I also think Nessa and Smithy have potentially been together but in a not-together sort of way for years. They've still been having sex according to the new special.

The80sweregreat · 28/12/2019 21:19

Brynlar just gets stressed out I think. I can sympathise! It's the pressure of the roast potatoes!

thenightsky · 28/12/2019 21:23

"OH, Dor. Where's the salad?"
"OH, fatty. Where's my cash?"

I love the perfect timing in that scene Grin

Doubleraspberry · 28/12/2019 21:27

And the earlier scene when Doris predicts what will happen when she’s talking to Gwen.

The80sweregreat · 28/12/2019 21:32

Like in ' the Royal family ' it's the mundane that keeps things ticking over. Very clever writing.

Christmasnamechange19 · 28/12/2019 21:37

The best motorway services chat was hysterical as I've actually had that conversation with people! It's the mundane that makes it so good.

We live near the M4 and one of the services mentioned is right by our junction. We gave it a cheer when it was named.

We liked it. I think it took a while to acclimatise to the gentle, subtle humour after a decade of obvious comedy shows, but we thought it was great (and squawked at the screen at the end).

We got the serial killer name references the first time round but Harry Shipman went over both our heads.

Neil the baby was an absolute love.

I can relate to Stacey moving in next to her mam, as I'm from the Valleys and it's pretty normal to buy a house on the same street as your parents there. In my experience, families stay as close as possible (90% of one street in my hometown is owned by my family, I'm part of a branch that moved far away). We didn't even click at first that it was Doris's house. Loved the tribute both in the show and at the end for her.

BarkandCheese · 28/12/2019 21:40

In the special they said Smithy and Nessa had been having sex every other week up until he got together with Sonya. I take that to mean he’s even going to Barry to see Neil the baby once a fortnight and they’ve been getting it on then. They have always had a strong sexual attraction to one another, but they haven’t always liked one another, however time and co-parenting Neil the baby has brought them together emotionally.

The80sweregreat · 28/12/2019 21:42

The teacher they referenced at the start in mick's bathroom sounded like a real person!
I bet he did exist.

WiltedPlant · 28/12/2019 23:23

I really enjoyed it and thought Corden and Jones did a good job of recreating their characters 10 years on and retaining the essence of the original series. So many "reunion" episodes become a parody of themselves, but this didn't feel like that at all.

I really liked the opening scene of Gavin and Stacey on the phone to each other as I think that's how the very first episode started, with them talking/flirting on the phone as colleagues.

Doubleraspberry · 29/12/2019 00:07

Every single episode starts with Gavin and Stacey on the phone to each other!

Mrsjayy · 29/12/2019 08:53

I had caught up on Graham Norton Ruth Jones is so reserved Nessa has to be great fun to play.

WiltedPlant · 29/12/2019 09:29

Blush I hadn't realised that. I've only seen each episode once I think when they were first on, so had forgotten!
