Now I think you're being a bit unreasonable about homeopathy. I felt a bit queasy once, took a handful of nux vom, and some hours later was able to face my curry and chips again with perfect equanimity.

donnie · 14/08/2007 15:51

"homeopathy is a load of old cock"

pmsl at staggering medical insight there. Who are you to tell me whether or not I would have got better without homeopathic treatment?

it's rhetorical btw - please don't bother answering.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 14/08/2007 16:02

"homeopathy is a load of old cock"

That is the conclusion reached by a great deal of very high quality research, though. I think it's fair to say you would have got better without it, too, unless you were suffering from some kind of deficiency that is cured by sugar pills.

Snake oil is excellent - what a pity he was never able to finish it. John Diamond was a very funny, clever, interesting and charming man.

i saw this, it was great. it really made me think because i had believed al ot of these things

Yes, foreword by Dawkins.

aloha · 14/08/2007 16:10

I used to commission him to write articles and sometimes appeared on radio programmes with him. In the end I could only commission by email because he couldn't talk, but he was still very funny and chatty. Towards the end of his life I suspect he was only himself when writing on his computer, because he lived via his brain and his conversation, and I think that must have been very, very hard for Nigella.
Yes, Dawkins wrote a posthumous intro to the book.

Oh yes, she's an enigma. That's what I think every time I look at her. Only the other day I was looking at this and thinking "Cor, that's pretty bloody enigmatic."

As for homeopathy:

Correlation != causation
Amecdote != evidence

Kathyis6incheshigh · 14/08/2007 16:23

Book is wonderful, but so sad he didn't finish it, as you say.

Pruni - IKWYM about Nigella. Also the way she comes across (eg on that god-awful afternoon chat show she did) doesn't make her seem like someone who would like someone like him, so can only conclude the reality is very different.

Stop it, stop it.. I'll have to have a lie down...

aloha · 14/08/2007 16:25

I think John Diamond saw in her precisely what UQD saw in her!

Kathyis6incheshigh · 14/08/2007 16:26

But even in that pic you can see the famous Very Big Arse which may be the key to the enigma (ie knows she has big arse hence not very confident despite extreme beauty). Just a theory.

UnquietDad · 14/08/2007 16:26

Yes, but it's a lovely VBA.

Sheherazadethegoat · 14/08/2007 16:28

i like nigella - i like her style and her resilience and most of all i like her cakes. just reading the domestic goddess makes me put on weight.

Nigella. Chained. Dirty. Filthy. Cakes.

I'm definitely going to have a lie down.

Bluestocking · 14/08/2007 16:31

How could she have gone from JD to Saatchi? And anyone who mentions filthy lucre is jolly unkind.

I don't mean to be rude but was there.... overlap?

I heard a rumour.

Re: The "Post hoc ergo propter hoc" logical fallacy ("after this, therefore because of this")

I learned this from an Inspector Morse novel.
