And then it picked up a bit. I weirdly feel a bit sorry for miss denham and begining to hate Clara. Suspect old lady wotsit will conk it before the series ends.

Its not Austen but nonetheless enjoyable (but then i also liked wild bill so i clearly have no taste!).

JaneJeffer · 22/09/2019 22:16

Clara is my favourite! She's not taking shit from anyone. I hope Lady Denham has left her everything.

God that Stringer is a hottie. She'd be mad to turn him down.

Kit19 · 23/09/2019 07:37

I’m certain that Otis will turn out to be a Wickham allowing Sidney to be the good guy. He will no doubt forgive Charlotte being a naive idiot about it all & then tell her he loves her. Charlotte will miraculously forget about all the times he shouted at her & was rude & patronising cos she saw him naked once & thought he was hot.

Young stringer will be binned because as we know the decent guy never gets the girl because we all love a bad boy amirite ladies

In the meantime my eyes will have rolled so far round in my head they may never come back 🙄

Kit19 · 23/09/2019 07:39

Still team stringer though even though it’s probably hopeless

FatherFintanFay · 23/09/2019 07:52

Mr Stringer really is insanely hot, isn't he? And much more age-appropriate for Charlotte than Sidney is. Sigh.

MonChatEstMagnifique · 23/09/2019 09:07

Am I the only one who is Team Sidney? He'll come good. nothing to do with being a little bit in love with Theo

EskewedBeef · 23/09/2019 09:15

I'm a Sidney fan too. I like, and I think it's believable, that he doesn't allow Charlotte to be snitty with him - she's a visitor with his family and has been an overinvested pain in the arse about him and his business.

Kit19 Grin

I gave up on episode 2 but I'm really enjoying the commentary on this thread Grin

I'm waiting now for Georgiana and Otis to be found hiding in Mrs Younge's house Wink.

I hate Sidney more every episode. But neither am I fond of Charlotte so if they get together I don't care. Birds of a feather...

Esther was daft not to marry Lord whatshisface but I feel he will come to her rescue in the end. Hopefully the "brother" hasn't got her up the duff.

ScreamingValenta · 23/09/2019 10:11

I'm fairly sure Esther will marry Lord Babbington in the end. 'Cos he makes her larf! Grin

I’m far more invested in Esther marrying Lord B because I find Charlotte pretty annoying as well 😆 I can understand why she irritates the tits off Sidney - still doesn’t make the shouting ok

Young stringer is an adorable cinnamon roll who’s too good for the lot of them

ScreamingValenta · 23/09/2019 11:40

Yes, I agree, Charlotte isn't very likeable on the whole.

I don't think it's very plausible that she'd bolt off to London on her own. If you think about the fuss that was made in Northanger Abbey about Catherine travelling alone - and that was just to her home - there's no way a 'respectable' young lady would embark on that kind of trip with a view to wandering round by herself in London in search of potentially unsavoury kidnappers.

Kit19 · 23/09/2019 12:03

@ScreamingValenta

No it’s nonsense - ppl of her class which seems to be the lowest rung of the landed gentry didbt travel that much anyway bit they certainly didn’t just disappear off to London on their own

I think in his quest to make Charlotte “modern” Andrew Davies has just discarded all the social conventions that would have surrounded her at the time

Kit19 · 23/09/2019 12:08

@FatherFintanFay@ReturnofSaturn

Entirely gratuitous Stringer aka Leo Suter chest because he’s going to be the only guy who doesn’t get naked isn’t he dammit

Sanditon ITV
FatherFintanFay · 23/09/2019 13:56

Kit19 thank you! Now I'm going to have to go away and give myself a talking to, since I am just about old enough to be Leo Suter's mum...

Kit19 · 23/09/2019 14:53

@FatherFintanFay

same but you know there's no harm in looking right? ;)

ReturnofSaturn · 23/09/2019 15:13

I find Charlotte irritating too. Hate her simpering looks and smiles at the guys.

Rhubarb01 · 23/09/2019 16:27

I'm wondering if we're being taken on a very twisty path with this story. Otis may well be Wickham-like, but only because he wants Miss Lambe's money for political ends. She mentioned that he belonged to a group of some kind - I assume it's an anti-slavery pressure group of the time or purports to be such. I imagine that, even if she is below the age of majority, her money might become available to a husband should she marry. This may be his real motive and Sidney knows it, or even that the political group is not genuine?

As for young Stringer - does he seem too good to be true? Playing devil's advocate here, but what if he's not as nice and decent as he seems? At the moment we suspect he's the good guy who won't get the girl - perhaps he's not the good guy at all?

Maybe grumpy Sidney is the only good guy in this - just a thought!

Rhubarb01 · 23/09/2019 16:30

And don't forget you could still elope to Scotland and marry without parental and guardian's consent until about 1940 - so not impossible unless her money is cleverly sewn up.

FatherFintanFay · 23/09/2019 19:32

Would Stringer be a more realistic match for Charlotte, do we think? I know very rich men such as Sidney marry penniless young women like Charlotte all the time in Austen because of lurve, but I don't know how much it used to happen in reality. An educated artisan type and the daughter of a gentleman who has lots of children and not much land... it could happen?

Rhubarb it's possible AD is going to double cross us by making Mr Stringer into a cad, but I don't think he's that subtle a storyteller. I feel sure that he would have made him say something nice to Charlotte and then turn away and do a secret little smirk, or leer down her bodice when she wasn't looking or something.

RiaOverTheRainbow · 23/09/2019 20:20

Is anyone else getting a bit sceptical of Sydney's "I did all I could Tom, the banks/friends/socialites said no"?
