I would have liked to have seen the scene where Sidney proposed to Eliza so we know if she’s aware it’s a marriage of convenience or if she really believes he loves her, but obviously they couldn’t show that because either way it makes him look much less noble.

Rhubarb01 · 14/10/2019 19:55

Did anyone else notice that Theo James was an Executive Producer of this series?

kaytees · 14/10/2019 20:12

Ooh @Rhubarb01 I didn't! I wonder why he wanted to play such a questionable character...

Have just finished watching. I found the Parker sisters insistence that Arthur hang around her forever infuriating... and YES @englishmummyinwales they all seemed very quick to be like oh yes Sidney off you go and marry that woman who destroyed your life. Jolly good.

WineOrGinOrBoth · 14/10/2019 21:04

I’d be quite happy with a second series heavily featuring Babbington. I think Esther is already in love with him. Hell im in love with him!

morrisseysquif · 14/10/2019 23:59

Just caught up, saw some spoiler on facebook so knew it would not end as I hoped. If I had wanted some love-lorn misery I would have watched some Thomas fucking Hardy.

I think the chemistry with Sidney and Charlotte was great. Sigh.

Andrew Davies is an idiot. Nobody will buy the tie-in novel and once the other side of the pond gets wind, they won't be arsed watching it either.

Jane Austen is all about the right true end - why should Esther get the happy ending when she has been less than good and kind and Charlottle not? NO No No.

Can anybody recommend an author who has completed the novel ending which gets it right? i need to re-set my heart.Sad

lululup · 15/10/2019 06:49

@Rhubarb01
Ahh I didn't and that explains a lot.

JaneJeffer · 15/10/2019 13:11

So have you all voted for Sanditon at the NTAs? Grin

Grin Jane

icelolly99 · 15/10/2019 14:39

Yep, I noticed Theo James was an EP. I imagined one of the pre production meetings...."we need a Poldark moment" Theo agrees to swim naked as long as his real life wife gets a part on the series. Grin

Loopytiles · 15/10/2019 14:41

What’s an exec producer? Do they have power and get loadsa money?

Kit19 · 15/10/2019 15:48

Ahahaha I didn’t know theo was exec producer. Generally the exec producer will be heavily involved in the creative side of the show & oversee the writing & storyline

I find it very funny that theo May well have been the person who greenlit that ending 😆😆😆😆

Babybel90 · 15/10/2019 15:59

Oh that’s interesting, I always assumed Exec Producer was a vanity title when they couldn’t quite afford to pay them enough 🤣 I was feeling sorry for him thinking well he’s a good actor, it’s not his fault the writing is shit.

Kit19 · 15/10/2019 16:04

Yep @babybel90 he’ll also have been involved in getting the finance together

I would start a hashtag #blametheo on twitter but I think I’d get eaten 😂😂😂

ScreamingValenta · 15/10/2019 16:28

So have you all voted for Sanditon at the NTAs?

Is there a category for 'series with the most disappointing ending'? Grin

EBearhug · 15/10/2019 17:03

I started reading Sanditon this morning. My copy was given to Granny for Christmas 1975, going by the inscription inside, which is in Grandpa''s handwriting.

I'm still in the early Jane chapters, what with having to go to work and annoying stuff like that.

Birch67 · 15/10/2019 17:36

After a dull of mulling/ stewing over the ending...

I'm pleased for Esther - she was unhappy and living with a very manipulative man. If this was the main 'happy ending' we got though I would have liked a little bit more of the motivation of Lord Babbingdon. He seemingly just fell in love with her, was able to see what no one else could. Again, it feels more 'Twilight' level romance to me rather than JA...

MrsMoastyToasty · 15/10/2019 17:41

Maybe Clara Brereton turns up in series 2 with a baby as a result of her romp on the drawing room floor with Edward Denham...

Rhubarb01 · 15/10/2019 18:00

If Clara turned up with a baby, we really would be in Thomas Hardy territory - given how poor she is and the likelihood of her being thrown out of wherever she is living without a penny to her name, she would probably end up in the workhouse.

JaneJeffer · 15/10/2019 18:13

I'd prefer Clara to turn up with a stinking rich husband and putting two fingers up at everyone else.

Babybel90 · 15/10/2019 20:15

@Birch67 I’ve got to agree with you, I was a bit Hmm at the whole I don’t want to own you speech, he literally knew nothing about her and kept pursuing her despite her telling him she wasn’t interested and being aware her aunt was pushing her into spending time with him, and we don’t really know anything about him other than he won’t take no for an answer and (in the words of Lizzie B) if he wasn’t quite so rich he wouldn’t be quite so handsome.

JaneJeffer · 15/10/2019 20:24

Wasn't that a North and South rip-off?

OP posts:
Rhubarb01 · 15/10/2019 20:44

Lovely though Lord Babbington was, I couldn't help thinking he was a tad too 21st century to be believable. Great for Esther, but possibly not very realistic. In that respect, as others have said, Sidney marrying the money was probably more realistic.

DrCoconut · 15/10/2019 21:22

It was quite enjoyable. All the exposed hair on women was annoying though, Jane Austen herself has a cap on in her portraits. And Charlotte being so readily accepted into posh society seems unrealistic too.

kazzaD66 · 15/10/2019 22:02

Yes Jane
Margaret Hale accused John Thornton when he was trying to propose to her of wanting her as his possession. He replies that he doesn't want to possess her because he loves her.

God, I loved Richard Armitage in North and South. I must dig out the DVD again Grin
