Well, that was shit. It does deserve to have a scone series commissioned, but there are so many loose ends hanging about, someone will have to tidy up to avoid the trip hazards.

EBearhug · 14/10/2019 00:31

It does deserve to have a scone series commissioned

That should have read,

It doesn't deserve to have a second series commissioned.

ScreamingValenta · 14/10/2019 06:55

It does deserve to have a scone series commissioned

'The Great British Bake off comes to Sanditon' maybe?

The ending would be more satisfying at least Grin.

Sumlove · 14/10/2019 07:23

Deeply disappointed in the ending.

Badly done, badly done indeed..... 😟

justanothernomaj · 14/10/2019 07:40

I thought the fact that he went for the rich widow was quite realistic except that he kissed Charlotte! Her father could sue him for breach of promise.
In fact that could be the start of series 2. Charlotte sues and is her own counsel of course. Barrister gown and wild hair and is successful. And is the toast of the town. Not.

Disappointing generally but so silly that I’ll go for another series.

ScreamingValenta · 14/10/2019 07:47

It's put me off 'investing' my time in a second series, tbh. Not sure I could face another 8 weeks of Charlotte having misunderstandings with Stringer/Sidney dithering about his engagement/misunderstanding-of-the-week with some new character, even if it did culminate in her marriage. And given that a second series hasn't even been written yet, by the time it's all been filmed, I'll likely have lost what interest still remains after the crappy ending.

The Charlotte-not-getting-Sidney ending might have worked if it had followed more inspired plotting than misunderstanding-of-the-week. There was no real build-up to it - the fire was just a contrived event to drive them apart one last time. If AD had had Charlotte gradually losing trust in Sidney, or if a secret in his past had emerged slowly to be fully revealed in the last episode, then their separation would have felt like the 'right' ending, but as it was, it just feels like 'Oops! Not meant to be, then.' The plotting was far too segmented into episodes for this ending to be successful.

Babybel90 · 14/10/2019 08:07

If anyone is interested, the £80,000 that Tom needs to rebuild would be the equivalent of £6.7 million today, so Mrs Campion must be a very rich widow indeed! And as Miss Lambe’s £110,000 was supposed to be more than Lady Dunham and all her circle together are worth, it just doesn’t add up!

Rhubarb01 · 14/10/2019 08:09

As hollow endings go, I wouldn't say that the thwarting of the Sidney/Charlotte romance ranks alongside the Christmas Day death of Matthew in Downton Abbey, but it has that feel about it, in terms of a very flat and somewhat depressing end to something that should have been entertaining and cheerful Sunday night viewing. After all, we have enough to put up with as it is - Monday morning, work, Brexit etc....

So AD was hoping viewers will be saying "You can't leave it there!" as if we are clamouring for more of this thrilling, intriguing, roller coaster or a romance? Unfortunately, I think it's much more a case of why did you bother and why should we care?

englishmummyinwales · 14/10/2019 08:26

Slept on it.

Still pissed off.

And @Rhubarb01 I agree word for word with your post. I expected to have a rare Monday morning spring in my step this morning. When I want reality, I watch something like The Virtues. This was supposed to be feel good drama.

I am fully aware that I’ve over invested and it is probably because there are various shut things going on personally and elsewhere but still, I think AD & ITV misjudged it.

I would watch S2 but am not convinced it will happen. We will see.

Right, off to think about Lord B and focus on other positive things. Have a good day all.

Loopytiles · 14/10/2019 08:32

Sidney: “I know I gave you the brush off down at Sanditon for young Charlotte with the unkempt hair, but now I want to give my brother £6 million to spend on it, so let’s get married!”

Babybel90 · 14/10/2019 08:36

@Loopytiles exactly! And it just makes him more of a snake in my opinion if he’s willing to marry a woman he knows loves him when he doesn’t love her just to get at her money! Charlottes well rid.

Rhubarb01 · 14/10/2019 08:36

Yes, that's it exactly Loopy Grin

Eliza must be as bad as Sidney really. There is a touch of the John Willoughby's about him, casting his true love aside for financial gain. As for that final carriage meeting teaser - what a nerve getting her hopes up only to ask her to forgive him because he feels bad. How utterly selfish!

Loopytiles · 14/10/2019 08:36

Yup, hardly noble.

Loopytiles · 14/10/2019 08:40

Mary should’ve dumped Tom, for further incompetence and grandiosity to the detriment of his family.

But guess she couldn’t as no economic independence or fair divorce law!

newgame989 · 14/10/2019 08:51

I was hoping they'd follow Clara as lead in S2 and tie this up - I don't know what future credibility Sidlotte would have now as he's prioritised his brother over Charlotte - was there no other solution? Sanditon twitter clearly looks like S2 is being hoped for!

Kit19 · 14/10/2019 08:55

Writers - miss lambe is the richest heiress literally ever

Also the writers - my goodness where on earth can the money be got to save sanditon

Audience - Oooh we know

Writers - there is no one who can help but Eliza

Audience - miss lambe miss lambe

Writers - there is no other possible way out but Sidney to marry Eliza, it’s sad, god knows but there are no other options

Audience - cooooeeeee miss lambe is over there

Writers - so so sad Sidney will have to marry Eliza but what can we do

Audience - fuck you

JaneJeffer · 14/10/2019 10:00

They should have let Tom suffer the consequences of his irresponsibility. He'll never learn.

lululup · 14/10/2019 10:19

Totally depressed still. So rarely invest in any TV and this is why. Need to go back to more quality dramas where the endings don't give me rage like this.

lululup · 14/10/2019 10:20

Is the book that's coming going to be the same? The novel? I mean wtf? Who's going to read that?

JohnWolfenstein · 14/10/2019 10:49

Haven't posted before, but been following the thread.

In the end I just didn't actually care about Charlotte and Sidney. Misunderstanding of the week was just irritating and teh fact she didn't fancy Springer was completely unbelievable 😏

I watched in the end for Lord Babbington and Esther. That was the real love story of the whole show. Their first walk together when you realise she's actually a warm human being held in thrawl by her wicked step brother was fabulous!

Couldn't care less about C&S. He's a fool and she's annoying!

ScreamingValenta · 14/10/2019 12:07

Miss Lambe having 100k + seemed a bit excessive. JA's richest heroines, e.g. Georgiana Darcy and Emma Woodhouse, only had 30k.

Babybel90 · 14/10/2019 13:20

@Kit19 exactly! If Arthur’s not bothered about the ladies why didn’t he get married to Miss Lambe with an understanding that she can do what she likes with Otis as long as he gets her cash and she’s then free of Sidney?

And I would’ve like to see Edward get his retribution by having to marry a stupid, plain heiress with only a small fortune.

And Stringer deserves some happiness, literally the point of his character was to have a father who would accidentally burn down Sanditon.

It was more like the plot of a Dickens novel than Jane Austen and I’m certain it would never have got commissioned if AD hadn’t put his name to it.

MonChatEstMagnifique · 14/10/2019 13:42

Slept on it.

Still pissed off.

Me to englishmummy. One of my children asked me why I looked sad this morning. 😂

newgame989 · 14/10/2019 14:13

It set out as a crowd pleasing piece of regency fluff you expect to have a happy ending, not gritty historical realism - you’re right @Babybel90 Dickens melodrama!

northerngirl2012 · 14/10/2019 14:15

I agree, a totally stupid ending. I've just watched it on iplayer ( or whatever) and its SO annoying on so many levels. Silly script writing, it could've been quite good, or at least entertaining.

I enjoyed watching it, nothing too serious or dark, exceptionally lightweight but oh the last episode was a dud.

Sydney and the builder - Patrick? Both totally hot though...
